Chapter Five

Bane had left.

Leon still sat in his office and the same glass sat in front of him on the desk.

He sat and thought about what had been discussed tonight.

Could Paulo still be working with his two older sons?

He shook his head. That wouldn’t surprise him at all.

But twelve years can also change a man. Paulo was twelve years older now and Manuel was cruel even back then, could he have kicked his father out of the cartel by now?

Leon brow raised as he thought yeah, he could do that.

But the question was had he done that? Then he thought about the plan Fredo and Manuel had probably made and that’s what concerned him.

He couldn’t even imagine. But now he had to think about how to stop them. He knew they were coming and there would be a showdown. He had very little time to get ready for it but Leon felt he was in the stronger position now.

He walked over to the window and was looking at his front lawn and in the distance he could see the front gate. In the dim lighting he could see a car across the street from the gate and it was just there. He could see a figure behind the wheel but in the darkness, he couldn’t see who it might be.

Leon stepped away from the window as he didn’t want to be seen but he stood there in the shadows, watching.

He wasn’t sure who was watching his home but he didn’t like it.

He went over to the lamp on his desk and switched it off.

The whole room went dark as he made his way back to the window but no one from the car moved at all.

Just then, a knock sounded on his door.

Leon made his way over and opened it.

Storm stood there and reported, “My street team just let me know someone is watching the house.”

Leon nodded. “I just saw that. I don’t know who is out there but I don’t like it.”

Storm growled. “Me either, do you mind if I take a look?”

Leon stared at him. “Take a look?”

Storm smiled. “Yeah me and my buddies will go take a looksee and can find out who is this stupid.” He tipped his invisible hat to Leon and said, “Don’t worry we know what we’re doing.”

Leon nodded his head at him. “Just let security know you are leaving, otherwise they will try to stop you. And let me know what you find.”

“You got it.” Storm turned and walked down the hall again.

Leon just shook his head and closed the door, then he went back to the window to watch what was going on outside his gate.

Out through the side entrance... came Storm and Frost as they made their way along the fence line. Then they slipped into the shadows.

Leon stood in his darkened office and stared at the car across the road.

Suddenly, the passenger door opened and Storm slipped inside. It happened so fast that it probably caught the person in the front seat completely unaware. They sat there for a few minutes talking.

Leon felt puzzled by this and just shook his head.

They both then got out of the vehicle and walked across the road to the main gate. Wordlessly, the gate opened and the three of them slipped inside.

Leon couldn’t see the driver well from this angle but the other person was smaller than Storm. However, with his size, most people were smaller, so that didn’t really mean anything.

Leon watched as the trio walked up the driveway and when they got closer he walked out to the front hall and was waiting for them to come through the front door.

When the door opened Leon frowned as he noted the person sitting in the vehicle was a woman. “Who the hell are you and why were you watching my home?” he snapped..

The woman stood very still and just stared at him.

Storm nudged her shoulder. “Her name is Lucinda as far as I know.”

She took a deep breath then she studied the floor rather than looking at him.

“You don’t know me, senor, but I bring you a warning.

” She looked up and stared him right in the eyes.

“I am Lucinda Martell, I am Paulo Gondo’s illegitimate daughter.

. I’m here to try and warn you of what they are up to. ”

“And why should I believe you?” Leon asked.

Lucinda snorted. “Believe me, if I were in your position, I probably wouldn’t believe me either but there is something you need to know. My father is not a good man. They have no idea I am here. If they did, I wouldn’t leave here alive and I have no desire to die, senor.”

Leon nodded, then asked, “Then why are you here, young lady?”

She took a deep breath and replied, “I am here to try and stop this insanity, senor. My father and my brothers need to be stopped cold and forever. What they have in mind here is against every law in the book and is definitely against the laws of God.”

Bane walked out of the shadows and asked, “And just what do they have in mind for this place?”

Lucinda snapped her head toward the sound of his voice and just stared at him for a minute then her eyes grew huge in her face. With a gasp, she stepped back. Her hands rose up as if to hold him off.

Bane didn’t say a word but his eyes grew cold as he stared at her.

Leon studied the woman as she looked terrified of Bane.

Bane stepped over to her and lifted her hair. That’s when he saw the scar on her neck and growled low while shaking his head.

“What is this?” Leon asked. “Do you know her?”

Bane nodded. “Yeah, I know her.”

“How and in what capacity?” Leon demanded.

Bane shifted his eyes back to the girl. “Years ago, I was tracking a contract in Mexico and I was close to taking him out when he grabbed a little girl off the street and held her up in front of him to escape a bullet. I paused the shot. He took a potshot at me then he suddenly had a knife and he cut her. He threw her to the ground and ran away. He escaped because I stopped to help the girl.”

Tears rolled down the girl’s face. “What he says is true. I will never forget that day. The man you were going to kill was Paulo Gondo. My own father. He suddenly noticed me for the first time in my life and then he turned me around so I would see the bullet coming. He turned his head away and shot at you, then he cut me, his own child. He then tossed me to the ground and ran away.” She shook her head.

“You should have followed him but instead you stayed with me.”

“And your father disappeared from the world for a very long time,” Bane went on. “And now he’s coming back to overthrow my friend here. But I am here to finish what I couldn’t back then.” He looked at Leon and curled his lip in disgust. “And this time, he has no child to hide behind.”
