Chapter Ten

Paulo went to the communication block at the gate and pressed the button. He spoke into it, “Hola. I need to see Leon Vincinti right away. This is Paulo Gondo. I’m here to warn him of an attack.” His voice sounded a bit tinny as he spoke with an urgency.

John asked what the nature of the attack was.

Paulo replied in disgust, “It is an attack. What other kind would it be? Maldito! I need to speak to Leon,” he insisted.

“Mr. Vincinti isn’t here right now. I’m his head of security. So you can tell me what he needs to know,” John insisted.

“This is unbelievable, esto es estúpido!” Paulo growled. Running his hands through his hair he snarled. “Chingar! You don’t understand. He needs to be here and I need to speak to him face to face.”

“Well..” John replied in a formal, professional tone. “He is not here at the moment, so you can’t speak to him face to face right now. You’ll have to come back if that’s what you want.”

“Where the hell is he?” Paulo growled. “He’s supposed to be here.” He glared into the camera.

“We cannot divulge that, sir,” John replied. “I can set up an appointment for you for tomorrow if you would like?” John sounded very polite.

Paulo scoffed. “I am very important. You need to tell him I am here now!” His eye did indeed twitch as he clenched his fists.

Then he looked at his son. He forgot the mike was still live or he didn’t know it was on as he told Juan, “He has to be here for the takedown. We need to spill his blood before we can finish this. This whole deal will be lost until we can assure Fredo he is dead.”

Juan nodded then turned to glare at the mansion again.

“He just has to be inside.” Then Juan stilled and turned back to his father.

“Do you think that Giovano is already inside?” He motioned at the wreckage of the front lawn.

“You can see how messed up the front yard is, maybe Leon is already dead. Maybe this place is already in his hands and now he doesn’t want to share the success with us. ”

Paulo growled at him. “He wouldn’t dare. He needs us as much as we need him. He wouldn’t dare lock us out now.”

Juan just shrugged. “But you know Giovano. Something like this is right up his alley. That bastardo codicioso wants power. I can see him cutting us off.”

Paulo nodded. “Si, so can I. That's why I’m not going to let that happen.” He stepped back and whistled loudly, all while raising his hand and twirling it in a circle.

He stepped back from the gate, raised his phone to his ear and shouted, “The old man isn’t here.

I say we hit him anyway. That fucker Giovano might already be inside and he doesn’t want to play. ”

At the end of the second block, the convoy began rolling forward.

A loud whistle came from the tree above the gate.

Paulo and Juan turned their heads toward the sound.

Up in the tree...

“Time to die, Paulo.” Bane raised his weapon to his cheek and ripped a bullet off.

When the bullet slammed into Paulo’s head, he flew backward for a few feet and landed hard on the ground. Of course, Paulo probably hadn’t felt a thing as the bullet made mush of his brain and blew out the back of his head.

In total shock, Juan just peered down at his dead father.

Raising his head, he suddenly looked all around.

The car was too far away for him to run to and he had a feeling if he moved at all, he would die like his father.

Instead, he dropped to his knees and raised his hands, lacing his fingers together behind his head.

He made a full surrender. He didn’t move at all.

As ordered previously by Paulo, the caravan of vehicles stopped in front of the gates and the doors opened. Men began pouring out. They headed for the rod iron gating. They all saw the brick wall that was the estate’s fencing. And they were all shooting toward the mansion.

No one from the mansion side stepped out of their places yet.

The shooting went on for several minutes before the men Manuel brought with him seemed to realize they were shooting at shadows. When the sound of pelting bullets died down, the men began searching for bodies that weren’t lying on the ground. They did see a very dead Paulo and some backed away.

Manuel and Trego finally stepped out of their vehicles and looked around the area.

Now Leon’s security men stepped out while shooting at the caravan men. Half of Manuel’s men were already down by the time they realized what was actually happening. The rest of the men started shooting back.

Bane had watched this entire event as it unfolded and now he had a bead on Manuel. He took a headshot without hesitation.

Manuel went down.

Bane then turned the rifle aim to Trego. He aimed and pulled the trigger but the bullet missed his head and it went through his shoulder.

Trego fell screaming.

Bane growled and tried to set up the kill shot but Trego scrambled behind the car for cover

Disgusted, Bane turned his scope to take down a few more men on the other side of the fence. Something caught the corner of his eye and he turned his head.

Trego was crawling up the steps leading inside the van.

Bane growled.

The van’s doors closed and he got into the driver’s seat. The engine turned over and Trego pulled out, turning around in the middle of the street. He had escaped before the shooting even stopped.

Finally, Bane swung his rifle back over.

Jaun was still in the same position as he seemed too afraid to move.

“All the king’s men,” Bane muttered, then he took the kill shot.

Jaun dropped instantly as he lay in his own puddle of blood.

Just like two minutes later, the shooting stopped altogether.

Bane climbed down from his position in the tree and calmly walked over to the front gate.

His brothers, sister and his cousin joined him there and they looked between the bars of the gate to the chaos on the other side.

Chaos took over on the other side of the fence between them. Men were cut down and laid all over the place. Only a few were still alive at this point. They could all hear the groans and some shouting.

Bane’s second sense kept screaming at him not to think this was over yet. He looked over at his twin, Cane.

Cane kept shaking his head, searching for something else as well. “This was just the first pass. They didn’t come all this way without a second wave somewhere. There is too much at stake.”

Bane nodded. “But the Gondo family are all dead.”

Just then, the front door opened as Leon, Storm and Lucinda stepped out. They walked the entire length of the driveway and finally joined them at the front gate.

Lucinda took in the sight of all the bodies then she asked, “Where are the rest of them?”

“The rest of them?” Leon asked. “Who is left?”

She turned to him and said, “Paulo had twice the number of men that are here. His brothers Carlos and Pinta were driving three more buses. Where are they?”

Leon snapped his gaze over to her and said, “I was unaware Paulo had any brothers. This is news to me.”

Lucinda shrugged. “They kept that information from the public. Paulo was the face behind the cartel but si, he’s always had two brothers. They made the deal behind the scenes. I think they stayed out of the light for a reason and now the reason is here.”

Bane snapped his head up to stare at her. Then he looked over at Leon. “This isn’t over yet. I had a bad feeling it wasn’t.”

Cane nodded. “And we don’t know where the rest will arrive. That makes this dangerous.”

Lucinda smiled slightly. She pulled out her phone and checked an app on her screen. Then she looked at Leon and showed him. “They’re already here, waiting a few blocks away.”

Leon looked at the screen and then at her. “What is this?”

She shrugged. “I tagged one of Paulo’s brother’s vehicles. He never knew it but I did. Then I got out of town before they did. I wanted to be here before they got here.” Shaking her head she admitted, “I didn’t know if it would work or not but I guess it did.”

Turning, Leon spoke to the camera, as he knew John was there, “We have enough time to clean this up,” Leon stated.

“Just make sure we have someone covering anyone that has to go outside the gate. Don’t be caught by surprise.

Get everyone on this. Get it done and get back inside before Paulo’s brothers arrive. Don’t take any chances.”

Bane looked over at Lucinda and asked, “What kind of men are Paulo’s brothers?”

Lucinda shook her head. “The kind of apple that doesn’t fall far from that tree, senor.

Rotten and smelly. All three of them grew up under their father.

All three are spoiled rotten. Carlos had two sons as well, and Pinto has three.

But I think you need to worry about Pinto’s boys more than Carlos’s boys. ”

“Why Pinto’s boys?” Cane asked.

“Because they are sneaky little shits. They will cheat in card games, marriages and fights. In life.... period. Just so they are on top. Vatos with no hearts. Laws don’t mean a damn thing to them and they are more vicious than the others.

Pinto made sure they could fight by having them beaten all the time while they were growing up.

Their names are Ortego, Silva and Chanto.

Carlos’s boys are Jose and Mono.” She paused, then said, “You think Paulo was bad? Well, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

His brothers are always together and they like to pit the boys against each other, so they can watch them fight.

They will stab supposed friends in the back.

It’s disgusting for sure. Yeah Paulo did the same thing sometimes but he never allowed his boys to fight with knives. Carlos and Pinta did.”

Bane looked over at his brothers then at Leon. “This could get even bloodier before we’re done here.”
