CHAPTER 14

Deliberate Touch

By nine that night, the field station had gone quiet.

The generators still hummed beneath the floor.

A radio crackled once from the operations room and fell silent again.

Outside, the mountain was mostly hidden by cloud.

Elena sat at the workbench with a damaged field harness spread in front of her.

Naia stood opposite.

"You could replace it," Naia said.

"I could."

"But you're repairing it."

"It's still usable."

Naia looked at the frayed section.

"Debatable."

Elena glanced up.

"Are you volunteering to do it?"

"No."

"Then let me work."

Naia smiled.

"Bossy."

"Efficient."

"Same thing to you."

Elena returned to the harness.

The repair was simple enough.

Replace the damaged buckle.

Reinforce the strap.

Check the stitching.

She held the strap steady while Naia threaded the replacement through.

Their hands met.

Elena stopped.

Naia did too.

It was nothing.

A hand against another hand.

Except neither moved.

Elena could feel the warmth of Naia's fingers.

Naia's thumb rested lightly against the side of her hand.

The station suddenly seemed very quiet.

Elena looked up.

Naia was already looking at her.

Neither spoke.

Elena's heartbeat felt unnecessarily loud.

Naia's fingers shifted slightly.

Not away.

Closer.

Deliberate.

Elena swallowed.

Then—

The radio screamed.

Both women jumped apart.

A sharp alarm burst from the speaker.

"Station monitoring alert."

Naia grabbed the radio.

"What happened?"

Static.

Then another tone.

Elena was already reaching for the monitoring terminal.

A seismic trace jumped violently across the screen.

"What the hell?"

Naia leaned over her shoulder.

"Swarm?"

"Wait."

Elena pulled up the raw signal.

The spike repeated.

Then repeated again.

She stared.

"That's not right."

Naia looked at her.

"Meaning?"

"The pattern."

Elena enlarged the waveform.

The same shape appeared three times.

Exactly the same.

She frowned.

"That's impossible."

Naia's mouth twitched.

"That's usually when you say something interesting."

Elena checked another instrument.

Nothing.

She checked the remote station.

Nothing.

Then the alarm sounded again.

Elena opened the maintenance log.

Her eyes widened.

"Rico."

"What?"

"He was servicing the alarm relay earlier."

Naia grabbed the radio.

"Rico?"

A sleepy voice answered.

"What?"

"Did you touch the seismic alarm relay?"

A pause.

"Define touch."

Naia closed her eyes.

Elena laughed.

Rico continued.

"I was testing the signal."

"You forgot to switch the test mode back."

"Oh."

Silence.

Then:

"That would explain it."

Elena leaned against the workbench.

Naia stared at the radio.

"Rico."

"Yes?"

"You owe us both coffee."

"Fair."

The radio clicked off.

For two seconds neither woman moved.

Then Elena started laughing.

Naia followed.

The tension that had filled the room only moments earlier dissolved into something warm and helpless.

Elena covered her face with one hand.

"I cannot believe we just panicked over a maintenance test."

"You didn't panic."

"I absolutely panicked."

"You checked four instruments in ten seconds."

"That's not panic."

"That's scientific panic."

Elena laughed harder.

Naia leaned against the workbench beside her.

Their shoulders touched.

This time, neither moved away.

Elena's laughter faded.

She looked at Naia.

Naia looked back.

The silence returned.

But it wasn't the same silence as before.

Something had changed.

Elena glanced down at their hands resting on the workbench.

Naia noticed.

Slowly, deliberately, Naia moved her hand closer.

Their fingers touched.

This time there was no accident.

No damaged equipment.

No reason to pretend.

Elena let her fingers remain there.

One heartbeat.

Then another.

Naia's thumb brushed once against the side of Elena's hand.

A tiny movement.

Barely anything.

Enough.

Elena looked into her eyes.

Neither woman smiled.

Neither pulled away.

Then the radio crackled again.

They both groaned.

"Please don't," Elena said.

Rico's voice came through.

"Coffee?"

Naia picked up the radio.

"Tomorrow."

"Good."

She switched it off.

Elena laughed softly.

Naia shook her head.

"He's going to tell everyone."

"Probably."

"Then we're never letting him forget this."

Elena looked at her.

"Agreed."

Their hands were still touching.

Neither mentioned it.

Neither needed to.

Outside, the mountain remained quiet.

Inside, something had shifted.

And this time, neither of them could blame the instruments.
