CHAPTER 41

Sofía's Answer

The field station smelled like coffee again.

Elena noticed it before anything else.

Not the sharp chemical smell of instruments or the faint sulfur that sometimes drifted in through the vents.

Coffee.

Normal coffee.

Sofía stood at the central workstation with two mugs in her hands, studying the morning data.

"You made that?"

Elena stopped beside her.

Sofía handed her one.

"I made coffee."

"This is suspiciously generous."

"I have news."

Elena took a sip.

"Good news?"

"Mine."

Elena smiled.

"Then definitely good."

Sofía turned toward the main monitor.

The volcano's readings were steady.

Stable enough that the station had returned to something resembling routine.

The emergency equipment had been reorganized.

The field logs had been updated.

The new monitoring schedule was pinned beside the communications board.

And beneath it was a document Elena had already seen.

The newly created position.

Permanent Junior Monitoring Lead — Kaimana.

She looked at Sofía.

"They offered it."

Sofía nodded.

"I accepted."

Elena smiled.

"I'm happy for you."

"I know."

Sofía looked at the screen.

For a moment, she didn't say anything.

Then:

"I thought I'd be more nervous."

"Are you?"

"Yes."

Elena laughed.

"That sounds about right."

Sofía leaned against the desk.

"When I first came here, I thought I was just helping you."

"You were."

"I know."

"But?"

"But I realized I was also building something."

Elena waited.

Sofía gestured toward the monitoring stations.

"I know this system now. The rhythms. The instruments. The field routes. The people."

She paused.

"And I like being here."

There was no apology in her voice.

No sense that she was settling.

Elena understood immediately.

"This isn't because of me."

Sofía looked offended.

"Obviously not."

Elena laughed.

"Just checking."

"You've got enough emotional problems without making mine about you."

"Fair."

Sofía picked up her mug.

"I want to do this."

Elena looked at her.

"Then you should."

"I already did."

The two women smiled.

There was something satisfying about the simplicity of it.

Sofía hadn't been waiting for Elena to decide what happened next.

She had made her own decision.

The position gave her responsibility for the day-to-day monitoring network, field coordination, and junior research supervision.

It wasn't a consolation prize.

It wasn't staying behind because Elena might eventually leave.

It was a career.

Her career.

Elena looked toward the mountain through the station window.

"You'll be in charge of this place."

"Not alone."

"No."

Sofía smiled.

"That's the point."

Elena understood.

The old structure had been built around temporary assignments and institutional hierarchy.

The new one was becoming something more permanent.

A team.

A partnership.

A place where expertise could accumulate instead of disappearing whenever someone's contract ended.

Sofía looked at her.

"And you?"

Elena knew what she meant.

"The satellite post?"

"Yes."

"Still being negotiated."

"Are you taking it?"

Elena smiled.

"I don't know yet."

Sofía nodded.

"Good."

Elena raised an eyebrow.

"Good?"

"I'd be worried if you suddenly knew exactly what you wanted."

"Why?"

"Because you're Elena."

Elena laughed.

"Fair."

Sofía returned to the monitor.

Then she paused.

"Oh."

"What?"

"I need to change the personnel board."

Elena looked over.

Sofía removed the old temporary assignment sheet.

She replaced it with a new one.

Under Kaimana Monitoring Team, she wrote her name.

Not beneath Elena's.

Not beneath anyone else's.

Beside the other names.

Elena watched quietly.

Sofía stepped back.

"Looks better."

"It does."

Sofía looked at the board.

Then at the mountain.

"I think I like my life here."

Elena smiled.

"You should."

Sofía turned toward her.

"And for the record, I'm not doing this because of the volcano."

"No?"

"No."

She took another sip of coffee.

"I'm doing it because I'm good at this."

Elena's smile widened.

"That you are."

Sofía nodded, satisfied.

"Exactly."

A notification appeared on the monitoring screen.

Routine.

Nothing urgent.

Sofía moved toward the console.

Elena watched her begin the day's work.

There was no dramatic farewell.

No promise that their paths would never change.

Just a woman taking the position she had earned.

Elena picked up her journal.

The recovered pages were still slightly warped from ash and moisture.

She looked once more at Sofía.

Then toward Kaimana.

The mountain had taken much from them.

It had also forced them to build something different.

Not because anyone had planned it.

Because the old structures had finally proven too small.

Elena slipped the journal beneath her arm.

"See you later."

Sofía didn't look away from the monitor.

"You're not leaving yet."

Elena smiled.

"No."

"Good."

She walked toward the second workstation.

For now, there was work to do.

And for the first time, the future didn't depend on one person deciding where everyone else belonged.

Sofía had chosen her place.

Elena had to choose hers.

And Kaimana, quiet beyond the glass, remained exactly where it had always been.
