I don’t have the words, the capacity to ask her to let me out of the cage, to let me give her everything she wants, she deserves. She doesn’t know she has my utter loyalty, my obedience, all trained on the curve of her smile.

For several long moments, we behold each other, at an impasse.

Ava breaks from it first, making a conflicted noise as she pulls her hand away. “Ok, I’m gonna call him. I mean, I should try, at least.”

I whimper loudly, rolling over and sitting up in the crate as she’s momentarily absorbed in her phone, flicking through menus. I rattle the cage, bumping my shoulder against it, trying to reclaim her attention. She shoots me a look, leaning back against the crate. “Behave!”

I slouch against the bars of the cage, waiting anxiously as she presses the phone to her cheek, waiting for the ringing to stop. Eventually a standard voicemail message plays, and she sighs.

“Hey, um, I know you probably don’t want to talk to me anymore, and that’s fine, but um, I really need help, right now.

And it’s actually, uh, kinda urgent, if you could call me back sooner than later.

I promise I’m not gonna be weird about anything.

I just need help, and I don’t have anyone else I can ask. Ok, thanks, bye.”

She leans absentmindedly against the dented shape of the cage, her ass and thighs pressing against the crisscrossed bars, pure temptation. My mind is snagged entirely on the soft flesh above me.

Distantly, I know there’s a reason I shouldn’t, perhaps even several, but it’s gone from my mind as I sit up and lick the back of her leg through the bars.

Ava jerks away from the cage with a little squeak of surprise. She gives me a reproachful look, before she rolls her eyes at herself. “I know you’re just being friendly.”

Inadvisedly, she sticks her fingers in through the gaps again, her nails meeting my snout and giving a brief, affectionate scratch. She leans back against the cage again, and I drag my tongue up the back of her thigh, a taste of pure bliss.

Everything else is gone to me except her thighs before me, the curve of her ass to gently scrape my teeth against. One catches the edge of her underwear, giving it the lightest tug.

Ava doesn’t pull away again, and the heady scent of her fills my thoughts, tracing my nose against the shape of her pussy under the thin bridge of fabric. My tongue flicks out against her, catching against the cotton.

“That’s . . . ” she starts to say and her voice hitches on the word, before she can declare it too friendly. Instead, a moan catches in her breath, and her fingers curl through and grip the bars, rooting her to the spot.

I give her more, her panties shifting further aside with every stroke of my tongue, my cock bobbing in the air unattended, dripping with hope.

Her hips twitch, and a little noise escapes her as she spreads her legs a little wider, giving me better access.

My tongue surges through her folds, more daring than before.

I can smell the stranger on her here, buried intimately within her center. A possessive growl escapes me even as I lick her faster, and she echoes it with a little moan of her own, spurring me on. The scent of her arousal thickens; the spreading wetness from her is my reward.

“No, we’re not, no. Oh my god. This can’t get any weirder.” Ava moans, pulling away all of a fraction of an inch, before allowing me to languish a long, thorough taste deep within her.

“Logan,” she whines, her voice full of frustration, and I freeze.

Hearing her say my name out loud quiets something within me. The incessant growling, pacing, pawing wolf lays down for her where it won’t for me. Under the moonlight, I’d almost forgotten it—who I was supposed to be.

In the gap of my hesitation, Ava pushes off from the cage, leaving me licking the bars.

“Fuck. No, I can’t. I’m not so fucked up over this guy that I’m gonna bone whatever followed me home,” she mutters to herself, and gives me a long, unreadable look before she turns away, pressing her phone back to her cheek. “Even if I already did that.”

I stare longing at Ava’s back, her shoulders tensed up by her ears. I wait, almost patiently, as she places another call. The line rings several times, to no answer.

“Logan, come on, pick up,” she complains, her back to the cage, before she curses and tosses her phone aside.

She’s not calling her ex. She’s calling me. She wants my help. But I can’t give it to her. She’s got me in a cage.

There’s a swell of aching feelings in my chest, pressing against my throat.

Words I don’t even have to offer when I’m more myself than this.

I don’t want to be myself. The tangle of duty, family, feelings, all of it repels me.

It would be far easier to stay a wolf forever and not have to return to any of the complications of humanity.

Ava is all that’s worth being human again. To hold her in my arms, to make her laugh.

I’d been so ready to sink into the nothingness that my wolf allowed me to escape to, the sliver of space where everything else became meaningless. Humanity had been a mask for everything that roiled underneath. It had lost all importance to me.

But if she wanted me in the daylight, I would be there.
