DESTINY
“Thank you for coming to support my beautiful daughter as we prepare for her big day.”
I visibly cringed at the sound of my mother’s voice as she stood at the front of the room faking the funk for all of our friends and family.
Just yesterday, she was in my apartment trying to convince me to leave the man at the altar.
Eden looked at me and rolled her eyes so hard I was sure she caught a peek at the back of her own skull.
“Everything looks lovely,” my aunt, Helena exclaimed as she clasped her hands together.
For as long as I could remember, her and my mom had been in silent competition over who could do the absolute most. She got a new Louis bag, Mom came back with a vintage Chanel.
If my aunt got a new car or jewelry, Mom would pester and beg her husband until he upgraded her.
When I really thought about it, she was probably just as much responsible for the stolen money as he was.
“Yes, we really outdid ourselves, didn’t we?
” she beamed. Unable to stomach any more of her lies, I stood up and walked away mid-sentence.
I stepped out the back door and pulled out my phone to text Brick, but the sound of voices stopped me in my tracks.
I stepped closer, making sure I was hidden behind a shrub.
“I’m just sayin’, have you seen the nigga? Like, I know she got a lil upgrade to her wardrobe or whatever, but this is Brick-Fuckin-West we’re talkin’ ‘bout here! He’s had some of the baddest bitches in the city! What the hell could he possibly see in her frumpy ass?”
“Girl, maybe she got good coochie?” my cousin Lisa said with a giggle.
“You know damn well she’s a virgin! All through school all she did was talk about how she was saving herself for marriage.
That’s probably why this wedding came up so fast. She tired of poppin’ that pussy for Jesus, and she’s ready to bust it open for a real nigga,” another cousin, Trina said before giggling.
“All I know is if she really is a virgin, I give her until 7:31p.m. next Saturday before she ain’t one anymore. ”
“You don’t even think she’ll make it to the reception?” Lisa asked.
“I honestly don’t believe none of this shit. There ain’t nothin’ you can say to convince me that Brick West is really in love with Destiny’s ass.”
Deciding that I had heard enough, I stepped back so I could slip away.
Instead of making a smooth escape, I ended up backing right into a floral arrangement and causing the most noise humanly possible as it toppled over to the ground.
Both of their heads snapped in my direction, and I sighed as they plastered their fake smiles back on.
“Des! Girl, y’all really did your thing on this shower! I can’t believe you’re getting marrieddd,” Trina squealed.
“I know, I am so excited!” Lisa said, mimicking her faux enthusiasm.
“Do you think I didn’t hear you just now?” I asked. I thought back to Brick, channeling a bit of his boldness and remembering what he said about not letting anyone play in my face.
“Wha-What?” Trina asked. “What are you talking about?”
“When you were talking all that shit about me, did you think that I didn’t hear you?
” I repeated clear as day with my brow raised.
“For your information, that nigga loves my dirty draws. And the fact that you two have so much time to sit up and make think pieces about me and my coochie is probably the reason your relationships are in the state that they’re in.
” Lisa’s husband just had his second side baby on her, and Trina had only been able to see her baby daddy from behind the glass for the last eighteen months.
The two of them stood there stumbling over their words to try to salvage the situation, and I made a note to have them removed from the guest list.
“Des! Where you at, girl?” Relief washed over me when I heard Eden calling out, I quickly excused myself and turned to answer her.
“What’s up?” I asked, knowing I needed to get her away from Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum because she would do much more damage than I ever could.
“You have a special guest,” she said with a mischievous grin.
“Girl, this better not be a stripper!” I fussed.
“No, he’ll be here later!” I turned to protest, but when my eyes landed on my future husband standing there in his tan button up, chest out, and brown slacks, my mouth hung open. I couldn’t tell which was glowing more, his brown skin, or his diamonds as both glistened in the sun.
“Baby!” I said, running into his strong arms. When he wrapped them around my entire frame, I leaned in close so only he could hear me.
“Grab my butt,” I whispered in his ear.
“What? In front of your people? Peep, you drunk?” he whispered back skeptically.
“Do it!” I demanded. “And kiss me like you really like me!”
“Shit, you ain’t gotta tell me twice!” He pulled his lips away from my ear and promptly put them on mine, kissing me like we were alone in my apartment again.
His hands slid down my back to squeeze and knead both my cheeks through the soft material of my dress.
I tried pulling away once I thought we had made our point, but he refused to let me out of our lip lock, tonguing me down in front of all my female relatives as they gasped and made scandalous comments.
My plan backfired because I was the one who ended up weak in the knees and wet between the legs when he finally let me up for air.
“That work?” he asked while resting his forehead on mine and giving me one last hard squeeze.
“Perfect.” I exhaled, eyes low.
Is this what it feels like to be high?
“What are you doing here?” I asked, touching my lips that were still a bit numb from the suction and now void of any gloss.
“I heard we were giving gifts today. I thought I would pull up with my contribution.” When he finally peeled his arms away from me, I immediately missed them.
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a box with a bow on top.
I stared at him curiously as I unwrapped it, eyes going wide when I saw the custom key fob that had “Peep’s Rover” engraved on the side.
“Brickly… What did you do?” I asked.
“I told you, I brought you a gift.” He shrugged before he reached over and hit the button on the fob, making the horn honk.
I spun around and covered my mouth to contain my scream as my eyes landed on the brand new Range Rover parked at the edge of the driveway.
I tried to blink back tears as I noticed that the custom wrap was done to match his green truck.
“Baby!” I squealed, running over to the truck. “You didn’t have to do this.” I smiled inwardly as I noticed the sour looks on my mom, cousins’, and aunts’ faces. That made the moment even sweeter as I pulled him in this time, planting a kiss on him that had his eyes low.
“Man, Peep… I’ma get outta here before I fuck around and bend you over this car.
Y’all ladies have a good afternoon. Baby, hit me up when you’re done partying.
” He gave me one more kiss before turning to walk away.
All I could do was watch the way his back muscles moved in his shirt as he made his way to his own car.
“Wait! Hold the fuck up!” Eden snatched the keys from my hand and hit the button. “This nigga just pulled up, tongued you down, then dropped off a Rover?”
“Yes,” I said with a drunken smile. That grin didn’t leave my face for the rest of the bridal shower.
A few hours later, we sat in the VIP section of a club that Eden insisted we go to. Like before, the music was way too loud and the flashing lights were annoying, but after my first fruity cocktail drink, I adjusted.
I was on my third.
“Okay y’all!” Eden screamed into a microphone. I blinked, wondering where she even got that from. I felt really cute in my cropped tube top and matching mini skirt set, and the more I drank, the less I tugged at the hem of the skirt.
“Give it up for my big sister! It’s her bachelorette party! So, if you wanna send us some shots, let the bartender know!” I rolled my eyes because I would not be taking shots with her.
“Are you having fun?” she asked, sitting next to me and tossing her arm over my shoulder.
“I ammm,” I sang as I sipped my drink. I frowned when Stasha gently took it out of my hand. She had been sitting there with a face that said she was silently judging me all night. I guess this was the part where she did it out loud.
“You don’t think you’ve had enough?” she asked.
“Girl, she’s getting married. Hopefully she’s only doing this once, so let my sister turn up!” Eden handed me a fresh drink, stood up on the couch, and started twerking. All I could do was laugh because she was truly one of a kind.
“I mean you might as well,” Stasha mumbled, taking a sip of her own virgin daiquiri. “He definitely seems like he’s having his fun.”
“What does that mean? I asked her with a raised brow.
“See for yourself.” She handed me her phone which had Kilo’s page pulled up on his latest story.
“Aye, my nigga! We outside!” he hollered into the camera as he puffed on a cigar.
Brick told me they were having a calm evening at a cigar lounge, but from the looks of things, they were more turnt up than we were with liquor, weed, and women.
The one that caught my eye was the one leaned over, titties spilling out of her minidress as she whispered something in Brick’s ear.
By the time it switched to the next story, the girl was gone and he was puffing on his cigar.
I stuck my bottom lip out as I watched the story again.
“That don’t mean shit. He was just talking to the girl,” Eden said, which made me feel slightly better. Usually, she was the first one telling me to hit him or blow up his car. He would still have to hear it from me because he promised me that it would just be the guys.
“Anyways!” Eden was on her feet again in an instant. “I got you something!”
