14. Send me your resume
Sophia's Pov:
After leaving the Whitmore mansion, I went straight to June's apartment.
The moment I entered, I felt lighter.
I freshened up, changed my clothes, and stood in front of the mirror.
I wore black loose-fit jeans and a simple grey t-shirt.
My hair was open, falling naturally over my shoulders.
Simple.
Comfortable.
But somehow, I felt happier than I had in years.
It felt like I had stepped back into my college days.
Back into the version of myself I had lost.
I smiled faintly at my reflection.
For the first time in a long while, I felt free.
I picked up my purse and documents and headed to June's office.
We were going to the lawyer together.
---
The lawyer listened carefully to everything I told him.
After hearing the details, he leaned back in his chair and said,
"Mrs. Whitmore, given your husband's financial status, you are entitled to a significant alimony."
I shook my head immediately.
"No. I don't want any alimony."
He looked surprised.
"You're sure?"
"Yes."
I looked down at my hands for a moment before speaking.
"He already believes I trapped him for money. I don't want to take anything from him."
The lawyer nodded slowly.
"Very well. Then what about child custody?"
"I want fifty-fifty custody of Lily."
This time he looked uncertain.
"That may be difficult."
My chest tightened.
"Why?"
"Because at the moment, you don't have a stable income. The court may consider that while deciding custody."
I swallowed hard.
Of course.
Money.
Everything came back to money.
Still, he assured me that he would send the divorce notice to Adrian on my behalf.
Once the meeting was over, June and I stepped out of the office.
"Coffee?" she asked.
I nodded.
We walked to a nearby Starbucks and found a table by the window.
I had a few interviews scheduled for the day.
June had already offered me a job in her startup, but our fields were completely different.
Her company was in fashion design.
Mine was technology.
Ironically, Adrian's company was also in the tech field.
And yet-
I couldn't even imagine applying there.
The irony almost made me laugh.
My husband owned one of the best companies in the industry-
and I was sitting here worrying whether anyone would hire me.
I had no professional work experience for the past five years.
But I hadn't let my skills die.
In my free time, I still wrote programs.
I kept up with the latest developments.
I read tech articles.
I practiced whenever I could.
Still, a five-year gap was a five-year gap.
And I knew it would affect my opportunities.
I was stirring my coffee absentmindedly when suddenly a male voice said,
"Hey, June."
June immediately looked up, and her face lit up.
"Oh my God-Oliver!"
She stood up instantly, and they hugged briefly.
The man smiled.
"Long time no see."
June laughed.
"You disappeared!"
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Things got busy. I opened new branches in California and LA, so work has been crazy."
June's eyes widened.
"Oh my God, Oliver, congratulations!"
He smiled warmly.
"Thank you."
Then June turned to me and noticed my confused expression.
She grinned.
"Sophia, don't tell me you forgot him."
I frowned slightly.
"Forgot who?"
She looked offended.
"This is Oliver Sinclair! He was in your department in college!"
And suddenly I remembered.
Of course I remembered.
We had even worked together on a project once.
But I hesitated.
What if I said I remembered him and he didn't remember me?(This once happened with me??)
Before I could say anything, he looked at me and smiled.
"Sophia Bennet, right?"
I blinked.
He tilted his head slightly.
"I knew I had seen you somewhere before, but I couldn't place it. Then June said your name and I remembered."
A small smile formed on my lips.
He extended his hand.
"Hi, Sophia. Do you remember we worked together on the TOSSA project in third year."
I smiled and shook his hand.
"Yeah, of course. We even won that event."
He laughed.
"Exactly!"
There was something easy about his presence.
Natural.
No awkwardness.
No tension.
Then he smiled at me and asked casually,
"So what are you doing these days? You must be running some amazing company by now."
The words hit me unexpectedly.
Because for a second-
I remembered the girl I used to be.
The girl who had dreams.
The girl people believed in.
And suddenly, I felt embarrassed.
Because that girl was gone.
I looked down at my coffee cup.
"I..."
The words wouldn't come out.
June looked at me, sensing my discomfort.
And Oliver's smile faded slightly as if he realized he had touched something painful.
I forced a small smile.
"I'm actually looking for a job right now."
Oliver frowned slightly.
"A job?"
I nodded.
"Yes."
He looked genuinely surprised.
"With your skills?"
I gave a weak laugh.
"It's a long story."
He studied my face for a moment, then smiled gently.
"Well, if you're job hunting, maybe I can help."
I looked up.
He continued,
"I'm expanding my tech division. We're hiring."
I stared at him.
"I mean it," he said warmly. "Send me your resume."
I didn't know what to say.
Because in just a few minutes-
Oliver had offered me something Adrian never had.
A chance.
And for the first time in years-
someone looked at me and saw potential instead of weakness.
