Epilogue — Serena #3

Once, his wanting me came with a slammed door. A frozen card. A car full of guards. Back then it was the most dangerous thing in any room.

Now it comes with a monitor glowing green and a phone left downstairs on purpose.

Same want. Different man carrying it. That’s why I can hold it now.

“Not because I thought your body belonged to me,” he says. “Because I knew I’d been trusted with it once, and I’d made myself unsafe.”

I touch his face.

“You’re safe now.”

His breath leaves him. The words still hurt him. Good. I think they always will.

Good doesn’t mean cruel. It means awake.

He turns his face and kisses my palm. Then he pulls me down onto his lap.

I straddle him, knees on either side of his hips, and he lets me set the pace. His trousers are still on. Mine are still on. For a few minutes we kiss like people who have time.

That might be the hottest thing in the world now.

Time.

Not stolen. Not desperate. Ours.

I reach between us and unfasten his belt. His hands press into my hips.

“Serena.”

“Yes?”

“Condom?”

I smile.

“Drawer.”

His eyes flick to the bedside table.

“You planned this.”

“I’m capable of logistics too.”

“My favorite kind.”

“Do not make logistics sexy.”

“Too late.”

I laugh and reach for the drawer.

He helps me strip him enough, helps me out of my underwear, then rolls on the condom with the same careful focus that used to make me tease him.

I still tease him.

“You look very serious.”

“I take my wife’s orgasms seriously.”

“That’s the correct answer.”

He grips my hips as I rise over him. Not pulling. Ready. Waiting.

I sink down slowly. We both stop breathing.

Still. After everything. Still him. Still us.

His forehead drops to my shoulder.

“God.”

“Good?”

He laughs once, broken and quiet.

“Very.”

I start to move. Slow. Deep.

My body is different, and he follows every change. When I shift, he waits. When I press closer, he gives me more. When I say, “There,” he stays exactly there like it’s law.

His hands slide up my back. Down again. Over my hips, my stomach, my thighs.

Want without claim. Possession without taking.

That sounds impossible until you’ve lived the difference.

I ride him until my legs shake. Until his breathing goes ragged. Until the baby monitor makes one tiny crackle and we both freeze.

Silence.

Then Cara sighs through the monitor and settles.

We look at each other. I start laughing. Quietly.

Rocco’s mouth curves.

“She has timing.”

“She’s your daughter.”

“Definitely yours.”

I kiss him.

The laughter turns into something hotter. He brings one hand between us, thumb finding me with patient pressure, and I lose the rhythm for a second.

“Rocco.”

“I’ve got you.”

The old phrase.

This time my body doesn’t flinch.

This time I smile against his mouth.

“I know.”

His whole body goes tense under me. Not because I stop. Because I don’t. Because I trust the words now.

I move faster. His thumb keeps working.

The pleasure builds slowly, then all at once. My hands grip his shoulders. His mouth is at my throat. Rain taps the windows and downstairs there’s a faint burst of Lucia’s laugh.

I come quietly because there’s a baby monitor on and people downstairs and dignity somewhere, probably.

Quiet doesn’t mean small. It breaks through me warm and deep, leaving me shaking in his arms.

Rocco holds still until I finish. Always.

Then I kiss his jaw and whisper, “Now.”

He groans and comes inside the condom, hips lifting once, hands firm on my back, face buried against my neck.

For a minute, we stay like that. Me on top. Him inside me. Both of us breathing.

Cara sleeping through the monitor. Rain at the windows. Home downstairs.

Real home.

Not perfect. Not safe because nothing bad can ever happen. Safe because if something happens, I’ll be heard.

That’s different. That’s everything.

Eventually, my thighs complain. Very loudly.

“Bed,” I whisper.

Rocco lifts his head.

“Side?”

“Face-to-face.”

His eyes soften.

He helps me move, cleans us up, and pulls back the covers. When we settle, we’re facing each other, naked under the sheet, the monitor glowing behind him.

He touches my hip. Not the baby’s old home. Not a wound. My hip.

His thumb moves slowly there.

“I love you,” he says.

I know. I almost say it.

Then I don’t, because that phrase belongs to the old days too, and I want this one fresh.

“I love you,” I say back.

His eyes close. Every time. Like he feels it newly.

Maybe he does. I hope he always does a little.

The baby monitor crackles again. Cara makes a small sound.

Not crying. Just checking the world.

Rocco’s eyes open immediately.

There’s silence. Then one tiny sigh. Sleeping.

Rocco’s hand stays on my hip. His head turns slightly toward the monitor. One ear open. Always now.

Not tense. Not afraid. Ready.

I move closer until my forehead rests against his chest.

“She’s okay,” I whisper.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He kisses my hair.

“I’m learning.”

I smile against his skin. Good answer.

Downstairs, Matteo says something I can’t hear. Lucia laughs again. Cara sleeps. Rain softens at the windows.

Rocco lies beside me with one hand on my hip and one ear open for our daughter.

He left once.

Never again.
