Chapter 11

CHAPTER ELEVEN

NORA

A voice called to her. It said her name, over and over, in a strange, disordered way.

She’d tried to resist it, but the voice sounded so…desperate. Sad.

Not wanting to disappoint them and to assure them that everything was all okay—that she wanted this to be over—she had opened her eyes.

An angel had loomed over her. A beautiful man, searching her with a look of concern. He’d had a scarred face and shining blue-green eyes that had been lit from within, a subtle glow in the dark room.

An amber light had cast a warm glimmer on his pale hair. He’d had full lips, a black ridge under his right eye, and another along the left side of his face. His eyes…must’ve been a fantasy conjured by her dying brain.

“Hello,” she had said, smiling like an idiot. Though he’d been missing the silhouette of wings, she’d known his kind came from a world above hers.

You don’t need wings to go to Hell.

Ah, that made more sense. Maybe he’d been a warrior who’d fought and won in righteous battle, but not without the unimaginable suffering of losing his wings.

She’d felt his hand in hers. Hot. Calloused. What kind of physical work did a fallen angel do?

Instead of begging him for mercy, which a small part of her had wanted to do, she’d laughed because thank goodness it was finally over. And then, embarrassingly, she’d thrown up onto his floor.

He had looked at the vomit, then back to her, his hand firmly on the handle of a gun. His dark brows had furrowed deeper, but even then, she’d seen command in his gaze. This man knew how to control and destroy.

After a pause, he’d smiled. Slow and a little shaky, like he wasn’t quite sure he’d gotten the gesture right.

Sharp canines had protruded from behind his lips. Deadly. Since when did angels have fangs?

She had rushed to apologize, hoping he wouldn’t tear out her throat over the mess. If she had a choice, maybe he could use the gun instead. But she hadn’t had a chance to make requests. Blackness had come over her again, with the distinct hope that this time it’d be final.
