CHAPTER 70
Her Own Name
AVERY
The workshop survived on promises people were willing to sign.
Not inspirational promises. Purchase orders.
The Red Mesa clinic cooperative ordered nine stations with deposits.
Two county fire districts commissioned pilot installations.
An outdoor school contracted for training.
Balloon owners booked winter repairs early in exchange for fixed scheduling.
The credit union offered a sixty-day extension if Seo Balloon Works reduced principal and converted part of the company into an employee-ownership plan.
Leila sold the unused storage lot.
Priya invested a symbolic amount and received a documented path toward shares after certification.
Avery invested her severance after removing the clause that waived her preexisting intellectual-property claim. The amount did not solve everything. It made the plan credible.
They held the restructuring meeting by video from the event trailer. Leila sat at the workshop table with the gray binder open. Priya appeared beside her despite being physically only three tents away because someone needed to witness the shop documents.
“Ownership percentages,” Leila said. “No emotional speeches until percentages.”
They negotiated for three hours.
Avery expected saving the family business to feel like sacrifice. Instead, shared ownership felt like relief. No one person could make every decision. No one person had to carry every failure.
Her lawyer called before the meeting ended.
Vantage Aeronautics had withdrawn its request for emergency relief after the independent review confirmed that core Windline code and hardware predated Avery’s employment.
A narrower dispute over later improvements remained possible, but the company proposed confidential mediation.
“Do not accept confidentiality over authorship,” Avery said.
“We can negotiate factual public language.”
“Do that.”
Leila heard the call. “Your grandmother would enjoy this.”
“The legal victory?”
“The paperwork.”
Avery laughed.
That evening, she changed the Windline splash screen. The product name remained. Beneath it, she added:
CREATED BY AVERY SEO. FIELD DEVELOPMENT WITH SEO BALLOON WORKS, OPEN HORIZON, AND PARTICIPATING COMMUNITIES.
Credit did not make a system trustworthy.
But erasing it had made exploitation easier.
Nolan found her testing the new screen.
“Looks crowded,” he said.
“It is accurate.”
“Then keep it.”
She looked at him. “Sam told me you canceled the documentary agreement.”
“I did.”
“Why did he tell me instead of you?”
“Because I did not want the action to become a message designed for you.”
Avery felt the answer in the place where hope had been waiting without permission.
“I rejected Vantage before knowing whether the workshop would survive,” she said.
“I know.”
“I did not do it to prove anything to you.”
“I know that too.”
They stood on opposite sides of the workbench.
Trust was returning without romance’s urgency. It came through evidence, repeated quietly.
Outside, the smoke began thinning.
