5. Genevieve #3
Slow at first. Long strokes that wake every nerve. His forehead rests against mine, our breaths mixing as the room, the safehouse, and the investigation disappear.
The tension rebuilds, deeper this time and connected to every place we touch.
I wrap my legs around his waist and pull him closer. Ronan groans as his control begins to slip and the rhythm changes, harder and faster, but he still watches my face for any sign that I want less.
I want more.
“Harder.”
His eyes flash. “Genevieve.”
“I can take it.”
His hand closes around my hip. The next thrust drives a cry from my throat, then another.
He moves with a power no human man could possess. Each stroke pulls me toward something larger than release—the connection between us tightening, stretching, becoming real.
Ronan feels it too. His expression changes.
“Do you feel that?” I ask.
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“The bond.” The word is strained. “It is waking.”
I should be frightened.
Instead, I reach for him. “Don’t stop.”
He does not.
The second orgasm rises as I begin to feel his pleasure—not imagine it, but feel the fierce pressure, hunger, and wonder.
Then fear, sharp enough that it cannot be mine.
Ronan’s fear.
Fear of hurting me. Losing me. Wanting too much.
The emotion crashes into my pleasure and multiplies it.
“Ronan.”
“I feel you.” His voice is ragged. “I can feel?—”
My release breaks over both of us.
Ronan follows, driving forward one final time and burying himself deep. The sound he makes is wolf and man tangled together.
The bond opens.
There is no visible light. No sudden silver mark. Nothing anyone outside this room could see.
Inside me, everything changes.
Warmth spreads beneath my skin, not only at my shoulder but everywhere. A new awareness unfolds at the edge of my mind.
Ronan.
Not his thoughts or words, but his presence. Fierce satisfaction. Exhausted relief. Tenderness so powerful it nearly hurts.
Then fear again.
He pulls back enough to search my face. “Genevieve?”
“I’m here.”
“Did I hurt you?”
“No.”
“The bond?”
“I feel it.”
His eyes close. Relief moves through the new connection so clearly that I inhale.
“You felt that,” he says.
“Yes.”
He looks a little alarmed. “You can feel what I feel.”
“Some of it.”
“How much?”
“I do not have enough data.”
A rough, disbelieving laugh escapes him.
He lowers himself carefully beside me and pulls me against his chest. I go willingly, settling my head beneath his chin. His heart pounds against my cheek, and something inside me echoes the same rhythm.
Physical and not.
Two versions of the same pulse.
I lift my hand to my shoulder. The skin is warm, smooth, unmarked.
Ronan watches the movement.
“No silver,” I say.
“No.”
“You did not bite me.”
“No.”
“But the bond is here.”
“Yes.”
“What exactly did we do?”
His arm tightens around me. “Chose each other.”
“For sex.”
“For tonight.”
The answer is careful and correct. I appreciate him for it.
Something less careful reaches me through the bond: the wolf’s joy at having me in his arms and its certainty that tonight is only the beginning.
I lift my head. “Your wolf disagrees.”
Ronan looks guilty. “It often does.”
“It thinks I belong here.”
“Yes.”
“Do you?”
He touches my face, stroking his thumb slowly along my cheek.
“I think you are here because you chose to be.”
The warmth in my chest deepens. “And tomorrow?”
“You choose again.”
I study him: the dangerous wolf, the Alpha authority, the scars, the bare room. A man with the power to command everyone beyond this door and the determination not to command me.
“Good answer.”
“It was the truth.”
“Those are becoming more frequent.”
“I am trying.”
I settle against his chest again.
Outside the room, the safehouse continues around us.
Dara is preserving evidence. Callum is probably taking apart a computer system he rebuilt yesterday.
Marcus is healing. The survivor from Dock 17 is still missing.
An unknown enemy is buying territory, stealing medical records, and testing Black Harbor’s boundaries.
None of that has changed.
Everything between Ronan and me has.
His hand moves slowly over my back, avoiding my shoulder. I feel the effort through the bond.
“You can touch it,” I say.
His hand stops. “The mark is not there.”
“I know.”
“You are afraid I will think you are claiming me.”
“Yes.”
“I know the difference now.”
He places his palm over my shoulder.
No teeth. No bite. No silver.
Only warmth.
The bond responds with a deep pulse between us. Ronan exhales against my hair, and the wolf settles.
For the first time since I entered Black Harbor, my mind is quiet.
Not empty.
Connected.
I close my eyes. Ronan’s heartbeat slows beneath my cheek, and his breathing evens as sleep begins pulling at both of us.
I remain awake long enough to identify the last unfamiliar sensation settling between us.
Peace.
His. Mine. Shared.
Then Ronan begins to dream.
I cannot see what he sees. I feel only the shape of it.
A black wolf running through darkness.
No pursuit. No blood. No enemy.
For once, he is not running toward danger.
He is running home.
