CHAPTER 3 - GOLDEN CAGES AND SILVER WALLS
The heavy oak door clicks shut, locking me into a luxurious prison that smells overwhelmingly of the man who dragged her there.
The sound of the deadbolt sliding into place echoes through the room like a gunshot.
I stand completely frozen on a plush, cream-colored rug that feels entirely too soft under my worn-out sneakers.
I take a deep breath, trying to steady the frantic rhythm of my heart, but my lungs are immediately filled with the thick, suffocating scent of cedarwood, cold rain, and raw masculine heat.
It is a sensory assault that leaves no room for doubt.
This room belongs to Ethan, or it is so close to his personal living space that his scent has bled through the very foundation of the walls.
I turn around slowly, taking in my surroundings with a hyper-vigilant eye.
For a prison, it looks like a spread in a high-end architectural magazine.
The walls are made of dark, polished timber, intersected by cold silver trim that catches the flickering light of a massive stone fireplace.
A king-sized bed with charcoal gray sheets sits against the far wall, flanked by two heavy nightstands.
To the left, a set of floor-to-ceiling French doors leads out to a stone balcony, looking out into the pitch-black abyss of the forest.
I walk over to the glass doors, my fingers wrapping around the wrought-iron handle. I push, but it doesn't budge. I peer through the glass, noticing the thick, reinforced steel bars on the outside, hidden behind the elegant draping of the curtains.
A golden cage, I whisper to myself, my fingers tightening against the cold iron. But it's still a cage.
I refuse to sit on the bed and play the submissive, weeping victim.
That isn't who I am. I start pacing the room, my mind working at a million miles an hour, cataloging every detail, every potential weakness in the security.
The stone fireplace is too narrow to climb.
The door is thick, reinforced wood. The balcony is a dead end.
I pace from the door to the window, back and forth, until the morning light begins to bleed through the pine trees outside, turning the dark sky into a bruised shade of purple.
Hours crawl by in an agonizing stretch of silence. My body is exhausted, my muscles aching from the adrenaline crash, but my mind is on fire. Every creak of the floorboards in the hallway outside makes me snap my head toward the door, my body tensing for a fight.
Just past noon, the heavy deadbolt clicks again.
I stop dead in my tracks, my shoulders squaring automatically as the door swings open.
Ethan steps into the room, carrying a silver tray with a plate of steaming food and a tall glass of water.
He has changed his clothes; the dark leather jacket is gone, replaced by a simple black t-shirt that clings to the massive, contoured lines of his chest and arms. His dark hair is damp, as if he just showered, but his eyes are still heavily ringed with exhaustion.
The stormy gray of his pupils looks turbulent, the gold from last night buried just beneath the surface.
He doesn't look at me directly as he walks over to a heavy oak table near the fireplace, setting the tray down with a muted thud.
Eat, he says, his voice a low, rough baritone that rasps against my frayed nerves.
I don't move from my spot by the window. I cross my arms over my chest, tilting my head slightly as I look at him. Wow. A personal delivery from the Alpha heir himself. Should I check it for poison first, or do you prefer to strangle your victims manually?
Ethan's shoulders stiffen. He turns around slowly, his stormy eyes locking onto mine with a dangerous intensity that makes the air in the room instantly grow warmer.
If I wanted you dead, Chloe, you wouldn't have made it past the parking lot last night.
Eat the food. Your human body needs fuel, and I don't need a corpse on my hands.
Oh, pardon me for my lack of appetite, I say, my voice dripping with biting sarcasm. It's just that my daily routine doesn't usually include being abducted by a walking, talking liquor cabinet and locked in a high-security cabin. My bad. Next time, I'll make sure to bring my manners.
Ethan takes a step toward me, his jaw clenching so tightly that a muscle leaps in his cheek.
He looks infuriated, not just by my words, but by the fact that I am standing my ground.
He is used to people bowing to his authority, used to his packmates cowering when his voice drops into that terrifying, animalistic rumble.
My complete lack of reverence is clearly a concept his brain is struggling to process.
You have a very dangerous mouth, human, he growls, his voice vibrating deep within his chest. Most people know when to keep their jaw shut to save their skin.
And most people don't think a brooding, dark-and-moody Alpha routine is a valid substitute for an actual conversation, I shoot back, hiding the fact that my heart is currently hammering against my ribs like an escaped jackhammer.
I'm not a member of your pack, Ethan. Your little dominance displays don't work on me.
So let's talk about the ground rules of my illegal detention.
Ethan lets out a low, breathy sound that might be a frustrated laugh, though his eyes remain entirely devoid of humor.
Fine. You want rules? Let's set them. Rule number one: you are never to leave this room without me.
If I find you in the hallway, if you try to slip past the guards, the consequences will not be pleasant.
And let me guess, rule number two is that I'm supposed to pretend I didn't see your eyes turn into a special effects reel last night? I ask, leaning back against the window frame.
Rule number two is that you never speak of what you saw, what you smelled, or what you know to anyone, inside or outside this territory, Ethan says, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register that makes the tiny hairs on my arms stand up.
Our world is kept secret for a reason. If the human authorities or rival packs find out that an innocent civilian is holding Silver Ridge secrets, you become a target. A target that can be easily crushed.
I swallow hard, the gravity of his words cutting through my sarcastic shield. But I refuse to let him see the crack in my armor. I take a deep, slow breath, my gaze shifting from his eyes down to the line of his throat, where a dark pulse point is throbbing rhythmically.
I'm an English major, Ethan. I spend my life analyzing fictional monsters.
I think I can handle keeping a secret if it means I get to keep my head, I say, my tone dropping into something softer, though still edged with defiance.
But this forced proximity thing? It's not going to work out.
I need my books. I need my life. You can't just keep me locked up here forever.
We keep you here until the rogue spy is found and the border threats are neutralized, Ethan says, his voice tight, his eyes tracking the movement of my lips with a strange, hyper-focused intensity. Until then, you are under my jurisdiction.
Your jurisdiction? I echo, a dry, bitter laugh escaping my lips. I didn't vote for you.
I don't need your vote, he barks, taking another massive step forward, completely closing the distance between us.
The physical presence of him is suffocating.
He is standing so close I can feel the heat radiating from his chest, a wave of pure, unadulterated body heat that seems to warp the very air between us.
The scent of vanilla and old paper from my own skin seems to hit him then, blending with his heavy cedarwood and winter forest aroma.
I see his nostrils flare. His eyes go incredibly wide, the gray completely swallowed by a brilliant, consuming gold that looks like liquid fire. A low, guttural rumble starts deep in his throat, a sound of pure, starved animal instinct that makes my breath catch in my chest.
He wants to touch me. I can see it in the way his fingers twitch at his sides, in the way his gaze drops to the collar of my oversized hoodie, tracking the exposed line of my collarbone.
The sexual tension in the room is suddenly so thick it feels like a physical barrier, heavy, loaded, and completely forbidden.
I feel a sudden, insane urge to step closer to him, to press my chest against his and see if the heat of his skin will burn away the terror inside my mind. It's a completely irrational, primal pull that defies every logical thought in my head. I hate him. He is my captor. He is a monster.
And yet, my body is betraying me, aching for his touch with a desperate, heavy hunger that leaves me breathless.
Driven by a sudden spike of pure panic at my own thoughts, I lift my hands, placing my palms flat against his massive chest to push him away. I'm going to find a way out of here, Ethan, I whisper, my voice shaking as I try to slip past him toward the door.
But I don't even make it a foot.
Ethan moves like a blur of shadow and silver. His hand shoots out, his fingers wrapping around my wrist with a firm, unyielding grip that stops me instantly. With a single, fluid motion, he twists his body, pinning me backward against the dark timber wall beside the door.
The impact is firm but controlled, the heavy wood of the wall biting into my shoulder blades through my hoodie.
Before I can gasp, Ethan leans in, trapping me completely.
His massive body is flushed against mine, his broad chest pressing firmly against my smaller frame, leaving absolutely no space between us.
I can feel every muscle in his torso, hard as iron, vibrating with a tense, restrained power.
His free hand slams flat against the wall right next to my head, his fingers splaying against the wood, anchoring me in place. His face is inches from mine, his hot, alcohol-faded breath fanning across my cheeks, smelling faintly of the mint he must have used to wash his mouth.
Let go of me, I breathe, my voice a thready, desperate whisper. The physical proximity is overwhelming, terrifyingly intimate. I can feel the rapid, heavy thud of his heart against my palms, which are still trapped between our chests.
Ethan doesn't answer with words. He leans his head down, his nose brushing against the soft skin of my neck, right over the pulsing vein that is throbbing frantically under his scrutiny.
He takes a deep, ragged breath, inhaling my scent as if he is trying to commit it to memory, his body shivering slightly against mine.
A low, trembling sound escapes his throat, a mix of a growl and a whimper that sets my skin on fire.
The urge to claim me is radiating off him in literal waves of heat, a possessive, dominant force that is fighting against his own sanity.
I can see the brutal internal war playing out across his rugged features—the primal wolf demanding he mark me, while the broken, bitter man inside remembers the pain of a previous rejection and screams at him to pull back.
For a single, breathless second, I think he is going to kiss me.
His gaze fixes on my lips, his jaw dropping slightly, his body pressing even harder against mine until I can feel the heavy outline of his thighs against my own.
The tension is a wire pulled so tight it's about to snap, a dark, seductive whirlpool that is threatening to pull both of us under.
Then, with a sudden, violent gasp, Ethan rips himself away from me.
He stumbles back toward the center of the room, his chest heaving as if he has just run a marathon.
The gold in his eyes recedes, leaving behind a cold, dark gray that is completely filled with a deep, bitter self-loathing.
He looks at his own hands, then looks back at me, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated disgust.
You think this is a game, Chloe? Ethan whispers, his voice low, ragged, and dangerous, laced with a chilling warning that makes the warmth in my veins instantly turn to ice. You think your sharp tongue makes you safe here?
I stay pressed against the wall, my breathing ragged, my hands trembling as I drop them to my sides. I don't say a word, my sarcasm completely failing me for the first time in my life.
Stop poking the monster, human, Ethan growls, stepping backward toward the door, his hand reaching for the iron handle without ever taking his dark, tormented eyes off my face.
Because if you keep pushing me, if you keep demanding a fight, my wolf is going to take exactly what he wants.
And trust me, sweetheart... eventually, you are going to get bitten.
Before I can answer, he steps out of the room, slamming the heavy oak door behind him. The deadbolt clicks into place with a definitive, heavy thud, leaving me alone in the dark fragrance of his room, my hand slowly rising to touch the spot on my neck where his breath had just been burning my skin.
