CHAPTER 5 - MIDNIGHT CONFESSIONS

A crashing sound from the adjoining balcony draws Chloe into the freezing night air, where she finds Ethan bleeding and holding a shattered glass.

The sharp tinkle of breaking crystal cuts through the low hum of the wind, followed instantly by a heavy, wet thud that rattles the floorboards right under my feet.

I snap my head toward the French doors. The glass isn't broken from the outside, but the heavy iron bolt has been rattled from its casing.

I hesitate for a heartbeat, my hand tightening on the edge of the blanket, before the sheer, stubborn curiosity that always gets me into trouble pushes me forward.

I slide the door open, stepping out into the biting midnight chill. The frost bites at my bare ankles, but the sight waiting for me on the stone balcony makes my breath freeze entirely in my throat.

Ethan is collapsed against the stone balustrade, his head hanging low between his massive shoulders.

His black t-shirt is torn completely to ribbons, soaked in a mixture of dark mud, melting snow, and fresh, pooling crimson.

In his right hand, he is tightly gripping the base of a heavy crystal tumbler, the top half shattered into jagged shards that are biting directly into his palm, sending thin lines of blood dripping down his knuckles.

Ethan? I whisper, the sarcasm completely failing me as I take a tentative step forward.

He doesn't look up, but a low, ragged rasp tears from his chest. Get inside, Chloe.

You're bleeding through your floorboards, Ethan, I say, my voice shaking as the metallic scent of his blood hits me, heavy and thick with that strange, intoxicating ozone undertone. I can't just leave a wounded person out here to freeze, even if you are my kidnapper. Get up.

He lets out a harsh, cynical sound that might have been a laugh if he weren't choking on his own breath.

He forces his massive frame up, his muscles straining against the weight of his injuries as he stumbles past me into the warmth of the bedroom.

He drops onto the edge of the low oak bench by the hearth, the shattered glass finally slipping from his bloody fingers to clink against the hearthstone.

I don't think, I just move. I ran to the small adjoining bathroom, grabbing a basin of warm water, a clean white cloth, and a bottle of antiseptic I found in the cabinet earlier.

When I kneel behind him on the rug, the sheer scale of the damage comes into sharp focus.

A jagged, angry laceration runs diagonally across his left shoulder blade.

The skin is torn open, smoking faintly as if it had been burned by acid, oozing a dark, sluggish red.

And right beneath the fresh wound lies a layer of old, twisted silver tissue—the physical remnant of a jagged, ancient scar shaped like a fractured crescent moon. His rejection scar.

Hold still, I murmur, dipping the cloth into the warm water and pressing it gently against the edge of the fresh cut.

Ethan flinches violently, his entire torso tightening into a rigid knot of pure muscle.

A low, thunderous growl rumbles deep in his chest, a sound that vibrates right through the floor and into my knees.

I told you to go away, human, he rasps, his hands clenching into white-knuckled fists on his thighs.

My wolf is volatile right now. The silver on those rogue blades...

it slows the healing. It makes the instinct take over.

Then use your big Alpha brain to keep it down, I snap back, my fingers working with a steady precision I didn't know I possessed. I'm trying to help you. The least you can do is not growl at the person holding the bandages. What happened out there?

Border patrol, he mutters, his head dropping low as I wipe away a thick layer of blood, revealing the deep, silver-poisoned tracks of the wound.

The Nightshade pack is pushing closer. They knew exactly where our blind spots were.

Someone gave them the rotation coordinates. The same spy the council thinks is you.

I freeze for a second, the wet cloth hovering over his skin. Well, they're wrong. I don't know anything about your borders.

I know, Ethan whispers, the admission sounding as if it's being ripped out of him by force.

I know you aren't the spy. My wolf... he knew the second he smelled you at the library.

A true mate cannot betray the blood of her counterpart.

The bond doesn't allow for that kind of deception.

It's an ancient law, woven into our very marrow by the moon goddess.

I squeeze the cloth out, watching the water turn a cloudy pink. You keep using that word. Mate. Like it's a contract I signed without reading the fine print. What does it actually mean to you, Ethan?

Ethan lets out a long, ragged breath, his shoulders dropping slightly as the heat from the fireplace catches the dampness of his skin.

It means assignment, he says, his tone dropping into a quiet, hollow register that sounds entirely devoid of hope.

It means the universe decides who holds the other half of your soul.

For an Alpha, it’s supposed to be our ultimate strength.

A pairing that stabilizes our power, ensures the succession, and keeps the beast grounded.

He stops, his jaw tightening as my cloth tracks over the old, silver tissue of the crescent scar beneath the fresh blood.

Until it isn't, I prompt softly, my voice losing its edge completely as I look at the ruined flesh. Marcus mentioned a name. Cynthia.

Ethan’s entire body goes completely still.

The silence in the room becomes suffocatingly heavy.

A year ago, he says, the words coming out cold, precise, and sharp as ice.

She was the chosen daughter of our secondary line.

The bond snapped into place on her eighteenth birthday.

I would have given her everything. The territory, my blood, my protection.

But a bond requires acceptance from both sides to fully lock.

The Nightshade Alpha offered her an immediate crown and three territories if she turned her back on a prince who hadn't taken his throne yet.

He lets out a short, brutal sound. She stood right where you are standing now.

She used a silver ceremonial dagger to slice through our shared crest, effectively tearing the bond out of her own flesh to free herself for his alliance.

The shock of a severed mate bond nearly tore my wolf in half.

It leaves a void, Chloe. A dark, hollow sickness that never truly goes away.

I closed my heart off because a man can only survive that kind of execution once.

I drowned the pain in whiskey and border skirmishes because feeling nothing was better than feeling the phantom limb of a severed soul.

I look down at my hands, a sudden, deep wave of empathy washing over me for the lonely monster sitting before me.

He isn't just a jerk with a bad attitude; he is a casualty of a brutal, supernatural political machine he never asked to lead. He’s broken, hiding his vulnerability beneath a layer of pure, aggressive dominance because it's the only shield he has left.

I dip the cloth one last time, my fingers brushing against the bare, uninjured skin of his lower shoulder to steady myself.

The moment my bare human skin contacts his flesh, something extraordinary happens.

A sudden, brilliant golden glow flares beneath the surface of his skin, tracing the lines of his veins like liquid sunlight.

The jagged, silver-poisoned wound begins to sizzle, the dark blood clearing instantly as the torn flesh begins to knit itself back together with an impossible, unnatural speed.

The smoke clears, replaced by an overwhelming explosion of pure cedarwood, winter forest, and a sweet, heavy scent of vanilla that seems to pour from my own skin.

Ethan lets out a sharp, gasping choke, his head snapping back as his eyes flare into a brilliant, blinding gold that illuminates the entire room. He turns around on the bench with a fluid, terrifying speed, his massive hands reaching out to clamp firmly around my upper arms.

He pulls me up from my knees until I am standing completely flush against him, my smaller frame trapped between his thighs as he sits on the bench.

The physical proximity is instantly suffocating.

The air between us is charged with a sudden, heavy current of forbidden desire that makes my head spin, my pulse racing like a runaway train.

What did you do? Ethan whispers, his voice a dark, velvety purr that vibrates directly against my collarbone. His breath is hot, panting against my skin, smelling of pure heat and raw instinct. Your touch... it cleared the silver. My wolf is completely quiet, Chloe. He’s resting. Because of you.

I can't think, I can't breathe. My hands are resting flat against his bare, muscled chest, feeling the frantic, heavy thud of his heart against my palms. I didn't do anything, I breathe, my eyes locked onto his gold ones, unable to look away from the liquid fire burning within his pupils.

I'm just a human, remember? Useless. Fragile.

Ethan’s grip shifts, his large, calloused hands sliding slowly up my arms, leaving a trail of scorching heat in their wake, until his thumbs rest against the sides of my jaw, tilting my face up to his.

You are a siren, he murmurs, his gaze dropping to my lower lip, tracking the breath that hitches in my throat.

Every rule I built to keep myself sane is rotting away the longer you stand here.

I want to pull you into this bed. I want to mark your skin until you smell of nothing but me.

I want to see if a human can handle the weight of an Alpha's obsession.

The sheer possessiveness in his words should make me run, should trigger every survival instinct I have left.

But instead, my body is melting into his touch.

My fingers curl into the flesh of his chest, my lips parting slightly as he leans closer, his nose brushing against the soft skin of my neck, right over the pulse point that is practically leaping out of my skin.

The tension is a wire pulled so tight it's about to snap, a dark, consuming whirlpool that is threatening to destroy both of us.

He lingers there for one agonizing, beautiful second, his lips hovering a mere fraction of an inch from my skin, his chest heaving as he fights the primal urge to taste me.

Then, with a sudden, violent shudder, Ethan shoves me away.

The sudden movement catches me off guard, and I stumble back two steps, my sneakers catching on the edge of the rug before I find my balance. The loss of his body heat leaves me shivering instantly in the cold draft from the balcony, my skin feeling raw and exposed.

Ethan stands up from the bench, his stormy gray eyes returning with a sudden, icy vengeance that is completely filled with self-loathing. He looks at his bloody hands, then looks at me, his jaw set into a hard, rigid line that deletes every ounce of the vulnerability he just shared.

Get to bed, Chloe, he growls, his voice cold, detached, and cutting like a razor.

You are a distraction I can't afford. I have a pack to save, a spy to catch, and a throne to secure.

I don't have time to play games with a human mate who will be dead in fifty years anyway. Stay on your side of the wall.

He turns on his heel and storms out of the room, the heavy oak door slamming shut behind him with a final, echoing crash that lets the deadbolt drop into place.

I stand there alone in the flickering light of the fire, my heart hammering a chaotic rhythm against my ribs, my fingers slowly rising to touch my tingling neck as the cold midnight air from the shattered balcony window rushes in to replace his warmth.
