Epilogue

Sone year later, Angela stood in the center of Vellum & Verdigris and watched her husband find her first. The room was crowded.

It always was now. After Lily, after the benefit, after the public collapse of a lie half of the city had repeated with relish, people had expected Angela to retreat.

Instead, she had reopened with sharper walls, better champagne, and a guest list that made even her enemies dress carefully.

Tonight, the gallery glowed again.

White flowers. Black gowns. Low music. The soft clink of glasses and the delicious hum of people wanting to be allowed near something beautiful. Angela wore ivory.

Blake entered late enough to be noticed but not late enough to be rude.

Once, he would’ve been pulled into three conversations before reaching her.

A donor here, a board member there, some lovely woman with a soft voice and an agenda pretending to need his opinion.

Tonight, Blake walked past all of them. Straight to Angela.

He stopped in front of her, his dark eyes warm, careful, and still a little humbled in a way she had come to trust more than charm.

"You found me," she said.

His smiled just a little. "I said I always would."

"You said that years ago too."

"I know." He glanced around the gallery, then back to her. "This time I understand it's a choice, not a line."

Angela's heart softened.

Blake had become very good at keeping his promises.

Not perfectly, because men who became perfect overnight belonged in bad fiction and worse marriages.

Still, he was honest and consistent, did therapy every Thursday.

No private calls hidden behind locked doors.

No easy defensiveness when Angela's fear sharpened.

No asking her to hurry through the days when grief returned wearing a new face.

Trust hadn’t come back like lightning. It had come back like restoration.

Careful. Slow. Requiring patience, attention, and the willingness to see every crack.

Angela lifted her left hand, adjusting the champagne flute she held.

Blake's gaze dropped to the ring. He noticed every time, but he never pushed her to put it back on.

That was why she had put it back on three weeks ago.

It was a choice that was hers alone. Blake took her hand and kissed the ring finger lightly.

No spectacle. No announcement. Just gratitude pressed to skin.

Across the room, Connor King watched them with a glass of sparkling water in his hand and a small, unreadable smile. He had remained a collector, a friend, and the rare man who could step back without turning bitter. Angela thanked him once.

He took her to lunch two months after the benefit. Not a hidden lunch. Not an intimate corner in a hotel bar. A bright table in a crowded restaurant where both of them could breathe without pretending the past hadn’t existed.

"You chose him," Connor had said.

"I'm choosing the man he's becoming," Angela had answered. "Not the one who hurt me."

Connor had looked at her for a long time, then lifted his glass.

"Then I hope he keeps becoming."

That was Connor. Elegant even when it hurt.

Honest enough not to make his pain her punishment.

Tonight, he stood on the other side of the gallery and inclined his head when Angela caught his eye.

There was no bitterness in his gaze, just respect.

Angela truly hoped that one day Connor would find the right woman.

If anyone deserved to be loved it was him.

Piper stood near him tonight, though her attention was nowhere near her uncle. It was on Damon.

Damon stood by the back wall wearing a navy suit and a baby sling. He may have negotiated with billionaires but apparently, he was still being defeated by bottle warmers and sleep schedules. The baby slept against his chest, round-cheeked and peaceful, one tiny fist curled into Damon's lapel.

The sight still surprised Angela. Damon had stepped up.

It wasn’t smooth and it didn’t happen without panic.

But Damon had committed to fatherhood with a stubbornness no one had expected, least of all him.

Lily signed what needed to be signed, took money she didn’t deserve but demanded anyway, and vanished three months ago with a married shipping heir nearly twice her age.

Last anyone heard, she was in Monaco posting photographs from a yacht and calling herself reborn.

Angela wished her exactly the life she kept choosing. The baby was better off.

Piper marched up to Damon with a small blanket over her arm. "You have him angled wrong."

Damon looked down. "He's asleep."

"He's asleep despite you. There's a difference."

"I have kept him alive for four months."

"You need help."

"Are you applying for the position?"

Piper rolled her eyes, but she stepped closer and adjusted the blanket with surprising tenderness. "I'm not your nanny."

"I didn't say nanny."

Connor, who had just taken a sip of water, stopped mid-swallow.

Angela hid a smile.

Damon looked at Piper in a way that made his usual charm seem almost uncertain. "What position would you prefer?"

Piper's cheeks turned pink. "One where you stop talking before I regret helping you."

"Too late," Damon said. "You like helping me."

"I like the baby."

"He's part of the package."

"He has better manners."

Damon laughed softly, and the baby stirred. Piper immediately lifted one finger to Damon's lips.

"Don’t wake him."

Damon went still. So did Connor. Piper seemed to realize a second too late that she was touching Damon Hunter's mouth in the middle of Angela's gallery. She snatched her hand back and busied herself with the blanket. Angela glanced at Connor. He looked faintly horrified.

"Oh," Angela murmured. "That's going to be interesting."

Blake followed her gaze and smiled. "Damon has no idea what's coming."

"Neither does Piper."

"Connor does."

Across the room, Connor was staring at Damon like a man reconsidering every security measure in his hotels.

Angela laughed. The sound felt good in her body. Easy. Unforced. Blake looked at her as if the laugh itself were a gift.

"What?" she asked.

"I missed that."

"I'm sure you did."

"I missed you," he said.

The words were simple now. Not desperate.

Not a performance. Just truth. Angela looked around the gallery she had nearly lost to humiliation and rumor.

The room was full of people who had watched her marriage break in public and now watched it stand differently.

Not spotless. Not untouched. Stronger for having been tested and rebuilt with open eyes.

She turned back to Blake. "Don't make me regret coming home."

His smile faded into something solemn.

He took her hand, not possessively, not for the room, but because she allowed it.

"Never again."

Angela believed him.

Not because Lily was gone. Not because Damon's test had cleared him. Not because the city had found new scandals to devour. She believed him because every day since, Blake had chosen the harder work of becoming the man who would never let another woman close enough to make his wife doubt her place again. Angela lifted her face, and he kissed her in the middle of her own glittering room. No one gasped, no one whispered, or maybe they did. Angela no longer cared. This wasn’t the old marriage.

This was the marriage she deserved and this time, Blake would cherish her.
