EPILOGUE

North Carolina

The farm stood just below them in the distance.

Smoke drifted out of the chimney, promising warmth and family.

Samson pranced, eager as they were to be there.

Maggie could feel the energy taunt as a bowstring in Henry’s body as she clung to him in the saddle.

They both wondered what, or who, awaited them there.

William rode a bit behind them, allowing them to feel their emotions. He’d done his level best at getting Abigail and Levi home. Now, only time would tell.

They’d had a lot of time on the road to talk.

She’d shared every detail of her journey up north and what had happened on the farm.

Now that Henry had been dismissed from the army, it was unclear if he had any connections left, but as the end of the war died down, he would try to uncover any information about her brothers that he could.

Sullivan’s last conversation with her weighed heavily in the back of her mind, but she still gave all of herself to Henry. He was her priority now.

As to their future, they would let God tell them what to do. Henry would find work in some capacity, children may come, and where they plant down roots would all be decided after time in prayer. Until that answer comes, they will start with home.

On impulse, Henry hopped down from the saddle and got back up behind Maggie. She sat nestled against his chest and he handed her the reins. “Take us home.”

There was nothing stopping them now. Urging Samson into a full gallop, she raced towards a place that would forever be home to them.
