Chapter Nineteen #3

Piper and Emmett returned together.

A large digital floor plan filled the central screen. Investigators had disconnected the external relay, but the local server still displayed every planned capture zone.

Most were expected.

Stage.

Vendor demonstrations.

Entrance interviews.

Reception-design displays.

One zone was not.

A bright red circle covered the ceremony platform at the center of the showcase.

The label read:

FINAL SEQUENCE

Piper stepped closer.

“What sequence?”

Sasha opened the attached production schedule.

Her face changed.

“Piper.”

“What?”

Sasha turned the screen.

A call sheet appeared.

THE WRONG GUY, LIVE FINALE

Location: Quinn Events Summer Wedding Showcase

Primary cast: Piper Quinn, Emmett Novak

Final story decision: Bride chooses love or independence

Piper stared at the word bride.

Emmett’s voice became cold. “There is no bride.”

Sasha scrolled lower.

Wardrobe had been delivered.

Piper’s exact measurements appeared beside a custom gown order.

Emmett’s measurements appeared beside a tuxedo fitting sheet.

The information had come from Piper’s archived client account, where she had stored measurements for a charity fashion event the previous winter.

Maren looked horrified. “They ordered wedding clothes for you.”

Piper continued reading.

The finale outline included three possible endings.

ENDING A: Piper accepts public commitment to Emmett.

ENDING B: Piper rejects Emmett and chooses herself.

ENDING C: Emmett refuses performance and leaves Piper at the altar.

Every outcome belonged to Vantage.

Romance.

Empowerment.

Heartbreak.

They did not care which one happened.

Only that something did.

Emmett reached for the keyboard.

Piper caught his hand.

He looked at her.

“I was only scrolling.”

“That is not your scrolling face.”

“It is the only one I have.”

Piper looked at the production schedule again.

“They built three endings because they do not know what we will choose.”

Daniel nodded. “That is why they need access to the showcase.”

“They need the ceremony platform,” Piper said.

“And the wardrobe,” Maren added.

Piper looked toward the center of the hall.

The platform had not been part of her original floor plan.

She had approved it after Vantage Moments offered to sponsor an immersive ceremony demonstration.

Owen had suggested the feature.

Of course he had.

Piper walked toward it.

Emmett followed.

The raised white platform stood beneath a circular frame waiting for flowers. Rows of demonstration chairs faced it from both sides.

A wedding without guests.

A set waiting for a bride and groom who had never agreed to attend.

Piper climbed the two steps.

Emmett remained below.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“Checking the structure.”

“For what?”

She crouched near the edge.

A thin seam ran beneath the white flooring.

Piper pressed it.

A hidden compartment released.

Inside were two garment bags.

One labeled PIPER.

One labeled COOPER.

Emmett climbed onto the platform.

Piper opened the first bag.

A wedding dress hung inside.

Silk.

Simple neckline.

Long fitted sleeves.

Exactly the style Piper had once saved to a private inspiration folder she never shared with Owen.

Her breath stopped.

Emmett saw her face.

“What?”

Piper touched the sleeve.

“This is mine.”

“You ordered it?”

“No.”

She reached inside the bag and found a card pinned beneath the hanger.

A handwritten message waited in black ink.

Every planner deserves her perfect ending.

Owen’s phrase.

Piper turned the card over.

A second message appeared.

Not Owen’s handwriting.

Printed.

Professional.

Wear the dress at the showcase, and Vantage permanently deletes the client archive.

Emmett read it beside her.

His entire body became still.

Piper looked toward the forty-six cameras surrounding the hall.

The equipment was disconnected.

The threat was not.

Daniel stepped onto the platform and took the card with gloved hands.

“There is another line,” he said.

Piper looked down.

Small text had been printed along the bottom edge.

Emmett does not need to know the offer exists.

The dress had never been intended to force both of them into a wedding.

It was designed to isolate Piper again.

One private sacrifice.

One secret decision.

One ending where she protected everyone except herself.

Piper looked at Emmett.

He had already read it.

Good.

She took the card back from Daniel.

Then she tore it in half.

“No more private offers.”

Emmett’s expression softened.

“Good.”

Daniel looked toward the investigators. “Bag the dress and the tuxedo as evidence.”

Piper held up one hand.

“Wait.”

Everyone stopped.

She looked at the ceremony platform.

At the hidden compartment.

At the cameras Vantage expected to control.

Then at the three scripted endings on the monitor.

Love.

Independence.

Abandonment.

All written by people who believed every choice could be sold if they controlled the stage.

Piper smiled.

Not the event smile.

The one Emmett had called sharp enough to cut.

“Leave the dress.”

Emmett took her in.

“What are you planning?”

Piper looked around the venue that belonged to her again.

“A fourth ending.”
