Chapter Twelve

Elowen Briar

A Dead Phone, But A New Beginning?

“We’ve arrived at your house, Ms. Briar.” The chauffeur calls out from the front seat.

I must have dozed off. The driver opens my door and a breath of night air wakes me fully. It’s been a dreadfully dark evening with a very unusual bright spot with Beau Drewitt’s name written all over it.

“Could you tell me how much the ride was so I know how much to pay him back? He didn’t give me a total. It just sort of happened.” I giggle nervously at the man, trying to cover the fact that I let a strange man buy my ride home.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Briar. I promised I wouldn’t tell you, and I also agreed not to accept a tip.

Mr. Drewitt pays me handsomely. He asked me to tell you that he looks forward to seeing you tomorrow.

The tow company he selected will collect your car at eleven o’clock in the morning and take it wherever you specify. ”

Pays?

I'm too stunned to instantly reply. I just stare at the gentleman, “Just the closest mechanic? Thank you. Really. Thank you.” I shake his hand and hurry to my door to slip inside. Leaning my back against the wood and sliding down until I am sitting on the floor, my heart rapidly taps against my ribcage. Like it’s ready to claw its way out.

What was all of that about? Beau is a magnet and I feel like I’m being drawn in. Opposites attract? Surely, he’s just being kind. Or, maybe he has that kind of money lying around. Or, he is as reckless as he looks. I’m going to say all three.

Is this how guys initiate dates nowadays? If so, I’ve been very misled.

I continue to sit on the floor and attempt to catch my breath. Genie, my dog, realizes I’ve made it home and rushes to give me his idea of emotional support. Accepting that your dog is always right is the first step of being a good dog mom.

I place my phone on charge and it instantly turns on. I open my chat with Imani, but scroll back to my apps. I don’t have time to unload all this on her tonight. It can wait till tomorrow. Right as I go to turn my phone over, a notification scrolls across the top.

One new message:

Please let me know when you make it safely. This is Beau, by the way. :)

Oh my god, it’s him. What are you doing to me, Beau Drewitt?
