I don't get the chance to tense.

The fist is close enough that I can see the knuckles, the particular whitening of skin over bone that happens when a hand has committed to its trajectory, and then two things happen simultaneously: a hand shoots past me from behind and catches the incoming arm mid-swing, and another arm comes around my waist and hauls me backward into something solid.

Solid is an understatement.

The structure behind me is the kind that suggests the person it belongs to was assembled with a specific purpose—dense and warm and built in the way of someone who has spent considerable time in situations that required being built that way.

My back is against a chest that doesn't move when I land against it, which is either physics or a person who has decided they're not moving and means it.

And then the scent hits.

It arrives fast, the way things arrive when they're very close—not the gradual build of a scent crossing a room but the immediate, surrounding quality of something that has decided to be everywhere at once.

Bourbon underneath everything, the good kind, the aged variety with the vanilla-oak character that comes from time in charred barrels rather than flavoring.

Citrus peel above it—specifically orange, bright and slightly bitter at the edge, the zest rather than the juice, the same distinction that exists in my own lime note.

And threading through both: something smoky but sweet, like a fire made from good wood rather than anything accelerated, the kind of warmth that exists at the base of certain Alpha signatures when the designation is particularly strong.

That scent combination should not be doing what it's doing to my nervous system.

It is absolutely doing what it's doing to my nervous system.

I became a confident person several seconds ago and I'm crediting the scent entirely.

The arm catches the pint man's wrist. Holds it. The grip is not aggressive—it's the specific, controlled restraint of someone who could do considerably more and is choosing not to, which is the kind of restraint that communicates more effectively than force would.

The room shifts.

It doesn't go quiet—bars at 3 AM don't go quiet—but it changes register. The ambient conversation drops in pitch, the way it does when something real has entered the room's awareness and the collective instinct is to assess before resuming. The eyes that come to us come fast.

A low whistle from behind me. Then: "Tsk."

One sound. Just the one. And somehow it is more effective than anything louder would be.

"I would be very careful," says the voice that belongs to the chest and the arm and the scent, and it is—unhurried.

The particular cadence of a man who is not raising his voice because he doesn't need to, whose volume is calibrated for a room that has already decided to listen.

"The alcohol's doing something to your decision-making, I get that.

But you're about thirty seconds from a choice you genuinely don't want to make in front of this many witnesses. "

I look up.

He's taller than I realized when I felt the height difference in the arm angle.

A lot taller—tall enough that looking up requires an actual tilt of the chin, and the jawline I clock first is sharp in the way of someone who's carrying very little softness anywhere on this face.

Defined, clean-edged, with the faintest shadow of stubble that suggests he shaved this morning and the day is getting away from him—dark blond at the jaw, catching the bar light in the amber-gold way that fair stubble has.

His throat when he speaks: the Adam's apple moves once as he finishes the sentence, decisive and clear, and the throat itself is—

I'm staring at a man's throat.

I'm going to blame the bourbon-citrus-smoke scent for this too.

He looks down.

The eyes are blue—genuinely, clearly blue, the particular shade of it that isn't grey-adjacent or green-adjacent but committed, the kind that stands out in low bar lighting because they don't need enhancement to register.

Bright, direct, carrying that quality of someone who is accustomed to reading rooms quickly and has finished reading this one.

"And my instinct," he says, holding the pint man's wrist still with no apparent effort, "is telling me this particular Omega is one I'd call my pack for.

Which—" his voice drops half a register, still conversational, still unbothered, "—you really don't want.

My pack leader is a specific kind of unpleasant when it comes to Alphas who put their hands near things he'd rather claim as his. "

The warmth hits my face before I can manage it.

And then the words catch up to me.

Claim as his.

His.

"Excuse me," I say.

He looks down at me.

"Who said anything about me being anyone's?"

The laugh that comes out of him is—immediate and warm, the kind that doesn't need to build up to itself. "An Omega with a spine. Excellent. I love this for me."

"You're very confident for someone I've never met."

"I am genuinely very confident for someone you've never met." He releases the pint man's wrist, now that the immediate situation has resolved into posturing rather than actual physics. "But my heart is doing something alarming and that's historically a sign I should pay attention."

"Your heart doing something alarming is not my problem."

"It might become yours though."

"Your entire cardiovascular system can be twitching for all I care," I say, "I'm not being claimed by anyone tonight. I'm behind a bar."

The laughter that goes through the nearby crowd is immediate—a wave of it, genuine and wide, the specific delight of a group of people who have been watching a confrontation escalate and have just watched it dissolve into something considerably more entertaining.

Even the pint man, who seems to be recalibrating what kind of evening this is, makes a sound that is almost reluctantly amused.

The stranger beside me—behind me, still, the arm no longer around my waist but the presence still close and the scent still doing its thing—grins.

It's a spectacular grin. Not performed, not deployed strategically. The kind of grin that arrives because a person found something genuinely funny and their face has decided to show it.

The pint man, somewhat deflated by the shift in the room's energy from tension to amusement at his expense, squares his shoulders in the way of someone regrouping. "And who the hell are you?"

The stranger glances at him with the ease of a man for whom this question requires very little thought. "Finn Calloway. Probably doesn't mean much in a town this size, but I move in certain circles in the city. Particularly the underground ones."

The word underground lands with the particular weight of something that is simultaneously vague and specific. Underground bars. Underground networks. The kind of circles that operate below licensing boards and above street level and function entirely on who knows whom and what they can verify.

He leans slightly—not much, just enough that I'm aware of the shift in his proximity, his chin dropping to somewhere near my shoulder height as he drops his voice to the register that carries exactly as far as it needs to.

"I can have you removed from this building and every bar in a thirty-mile radius before six AM," he says, pleasantly, the way someone might discuss weather, "if you want to keep this going.

Or you can take the off-ramp and let everyone get back to St. Patrick's Day, which is what it's supposed to be. "

A man from the back of the group—slightly more sober than the average, and considerably more willing to read the room—leans toward the pint man and says his name in the tone of a person redirecting someone from a terrible decision.

The words that follow are quiet, but the pieces I catch are enough: Finn's name, a name that sounds like Declan, something about a security operation, something about cage fighting, which makes several people in the immediate vicinity quietly update their evening's risk calculus.

The silence that goes through the section of bar is the specific quality of a room that has received new information and is incorporating it.

Finn laughs.

Bright, easy, the social lubricant that it clearly is from someone who has done this before—diffused rooms with personality because personality is a more elegant solution than force in most situations.

"I'm glad someone knows him. Declan really is terrifying when he's motivated, I'll be honest with you.

He's the measured, reasonable one of us and even he has a limit.

" A beat, and the grin narrows slightly into something more pointed.

"And you should pray Rowan stays on the smoking terrace, because Rowan has no patience for this particular flavor of nonsense and he doesn't do measured. "

The pint man looks at the other man. The other man gives a single, serious nod. The kind that says: trust me, this isn't the fight you want.

"Fine." He settles back. "Not in the mood for this anyway."

"Brilliant." Finn straightens fully, the conversational weight lifting from the moment entirely. "I'll cover your next pint. Consider it a peace offering from someone who interrupted your night."

He says it like a host at an event who's smoothed over a minor disruption and is returning the room to its scheduled programming. The pint man doesn't look entirely pleased, but he accepts the offer in the way people accept graceful exits—gratefully and without acknowledgment.

Finn turns to me.
