Chapter Seven

The twins peeked through the fence, their wolves already clawing inside, moved by their desire to mark their mate.

“Shit. Come back here!” hissed Tanya.

They were about to jump the fence when a powerful voice thundered, “Stand down, both of you!”

Their uncle, Alpha Connor, was at the door. His Alpha aura subdued them, forcing them to obey.

Behind him, both Faolan and Elyse, his mate and Luna, seemed startled.

“Enter. Now!”

“It’s our mate!” growled Declan, and by the tone of his voice, his wolf was near the surface.

“And if you don’t want to lose her, you’ll do what your uncle tells you to,” whispered Evelyn, her eyes on the sleeping girl. She looked helplessly at her son. “The High King needs to be warned.”

“What were the odds?” asked Connor, more to himself than to the others. They sat at the kitchen table, their dinner all but forgotten, the twins flanked by their uncle and cousins.

“The High King must be warned.”

“Will you reject her?” asked Tanya.

“No!” they both shouted, startling everyone. “She’s ours.”

“This is unbelievable ... the girl came here to heal, and ended up with you two... The Moon Goddess must be having a blast with this.”

Not even the High King would interfere in a second chance mate, rare as they were.

“What the hell are we supposed to do now? Our better half is on the other side of that fence!”

“I don’t even want to know how in hell that arrangement is going to work,” muttered Tanya.

“Ugh, gross...” Tara whispered.

“But you must consider what she went through. The human above everything else. The question now is, what are you going to do?”

”Love her.”

“Heal her.”

The answer, given in unison, mirrored the determination that was evident on both of their faces. They both had the stubborn face that was common on the men of the family.

Evelyn sighed, tiredly.

“One wolf destroyed her and her life. What do you think she’ll do when she discovers that now there are two who want to mate her?”

“What is needed.”

“I don’t even know what the fuck that means,” said Connor. “What I do know is that I need to inform the High King. And you ... do something with yourselves. At the first sign of distress, I’m taking that girl with me and hiding her, mated or not.”

Seeing that the twins were a hair’s breadth away from throwing themselves at their uncle's neck, Evelyn said hurriedly, “I think she needs help to get her out of the house. She spends her days there, cooped up. Her mind wanders and the panic sets in. I think having something for her to do during the day would help her clear her mind of things.”

“What do you suggest?” asked Connor, his golden eyes never leaving his nephews. His wolf was close to the surface, and the twins’ eyes were changing from cerulean to brown. Their own wolves wanted to shift and be with their mate.

Already exasperated by the amount of testosterone in the air, it was Tanya who offered a suggestion, “Look, if I’m to open the gym, I’m going to need a receptionist. I was thinking of adding a small cafeteria to the joint, so I’m also going to need someone to be behind the balcony.”

“She’s not prepared to be surrounded by people.”

“And she’ll never be if she never leaves the house! This way, she can go from one place to another when she’s feeling overwhelmed!”

“I can work there too until school starts,” piped Tara.

“And so can I,” said Faolan. A younger version of Connor, he spoke quietly and confidently. “Start working there for the time being, not starting school,” he clarified.

“I’m so glad the idea was not to overwhelm the poor girl...” said Elyse in an amused tone.

“Let me introduce you to her gently ... and if you go all cavemen on her, I’ll neuter you myself!

” Evelyn threatened, brandishing the butter knife as a sword.

And because they knew their grandmother as well as they did, the boys groaned in unison and put their hands to their groins, in case she wanted to put her words into action...
