Chapter Thirty-Six

They didn’t go to work the next day. Freya was sore from all their lovemaking, and her neck had some purple bruises that she was embarrassed by. They, on the other hand, were proud of her for taking not one but two shifters and didn’t even have her own wolf to help her heal.

They mind linked their Alpha to inform him of their recent mating, and stayed at home, showering her with attention. Declan cooked a giant breakfast that they ended up eating in bed, they showered together, which lead to another round, and finally slept the day away on their freshly made bed.

Freya was sore all over when she woke up, her muscles protesting from all the extra exercise. But she felt wonderfully languid. Before, she’d felt used, discarded, dirty ... now she felt loved. She knew she had only to open her mouth and her mates would bend over backward to provide for her.

Her body was humming, her neck still tender, but her heart was bursting with joy.

“Would you want a human marriage?” asked Declan later in the day, when they were nestled in her room, the TV on but with a low sound. Neither was paying attention to what it was showing, but it was background noise, nevertheless.

“A wedding at a church?” she laughed. “No priest would marry me with two men.”

“True ... humans can be limited like that. But I was referring to a big wedding, with a white gown and flowers, and...”

“Not really,” she admitted, after a slight pause. “I guess it never entered my mind. Besides, who would attend from my side? It’s just me.”

“And just you is delicious...” muttered Ciaran, nibling on her ear.

“Oh, shush it, you’re terrible.” She laughed and pretended to pat him. “No, I never thought of that. Before, I was too young, and later...” she shrugged.

“Well, think now ... we can make it happen.”

They froze, and she stared at them, speechless.

Both had a glassy look in their eyes as they communicated mentally.

They were mind-linking someone, and as soon as their eyes resumed the alert expression, all the playfulness was gone.

They jumped out of bed and put on their pants in the blink of an eye, peeking through the closed curtains.

Declan helped her put on her robe and said, “We don’t want to alarm you, little one, but the Alpha’s guards picked up the rotten scent near the gym again, and the trail ended up on our street. Now it’s vanished, but we aren’t taking any chances, we want you with us.”

“You need to get dressed; we’re leaving.”

“Where are we going?”

“To the Alpha’s house. It’s safer there. Faolan already took Nanna and Tara.”

“And Tanya?” fear was clogging her throat, but she needed to be strong and put on some pants and a loose shirt.

“Already on her way.”

They’d gone from relaxed lovers to soldiers in a state of alertness ... seconds from one state to the other, and she wanted to be worthy of them.

“I’m ready.”

“You’re beautiful,” they kissed her fully on the lips and took her hand, leaving the house with eyes wide open.

She couldn’t feel anything in the air, but they sniffed and their eyes glowed, as their wolves attempted to take control.

“They were here,” Ciaran growled.

The scents were faint, so either they didn’t reach their house, or they were long gone.

“Come now, little one.”

They could feel three different scents in the air, and the third was by far the worst. It made them want to vomit to learn that a mangy mongrel had been so close to their mate without them noticing.

They’d been distracted by the mating, but that ended now.

No more distractions until they knew for a fact their mate was safe.
