Chapter Twenty-Six

Brynn

He lowered his head to mine, and our lips met in a kiss that was at once familiar and new. There was no hesitation as we relearned each other’s contours. But then something shifted, and the kiss deepened, earlier distance between us melting away in the desperate press of his mouth against mine.

His hands framed my face as if committing it to memory, his tongue—longer and more flexible than a human’s—tracing the seam of my lips before delving inside to explore my mouth. The sensation was intoxicating—unlike any human kiss, more intimate, more claiming.

I responded with equal passion, my fingers moving over the scaled ridges at his nape and along his scalp. He was here. He was mine. We were us.

He broke the kiss, resting his forehead against mine. “I would have missed this,” he admitted, his voice thick with emotion. “Missed you.”

“But you will remain, and so will I,” I whispered. “Reclaim what’s yours.”

A low rumble vibrated through his chest—a sound of pleasure, of possession. Then he was lifting me, his strength effortless as he carried me to the sleeping area, to the nest of bedcovers where we had shared so much intimacy.

He laid me down gently, his golden eyes never leaving mine as he began to undress me. His touch was reverent, almost worshipful, as if rediscovering a treasure he had feared lost. Each piece of clothing removed was accompanied by a kiss to newly exposed skin, his lips warm against my flesh.

When I was naked before him, I didn’t feel the slightest insecurity. I saw only the wonder in his expression, the way his pupils expanded, signaling his growing arousal.

“You are beautiful,” he murmured, his hands tracing the curves of my body with a surgeon’s precision and a lover’s tenderness.

I reached for him, eager to feel his alien form against mine. “And you,” I said, my fingers working at the fastenings of his clothing, “are magnificent.”

When he was finally naked, I took a moment to simply look at him.

His body was a study in contrasts—broad and powerful, yet capable of such gentleness.

The scales along his arms and torso shimmered in the fading sunlight.

His cock extruded from its sheath, the mushroom-like head over the shaft with its nubs and ridges already glistening with anticipation.

He lowered himself over me, supporting his weight on his forearms as he positioned himself between my thighs. We came together eagerly, without restraint, the reconciliation physical as well as emotional.

“I want all of you hard and fast, until there’s no space between us for doubt or misunderstanding,” I told him.

His eyes widened slightly, then darkened with desire. “As you wish,” he growled, and then he was entering me with a single, smooth thrust that stole my breath.

The sensation was exquisite—a perfect balance of pleasure and pressure that sent sparks dancing behind my eyes. As Thexan’s ridged anatomy dragged against my inner walls with each withdrawal, I cried out with pleasure, holding tightly across the powerful muscles of his back.

We found our rhythm together, building quickly this time. There was no ceremony, no ritual—only raw, primal need. The need to reconnect, to reaffirm, to reclaim what we had almost lost.

Our coupling was a melding of differences and similarities—the texture of scales against my smooth skin, his alien body finding perfect harmony with my human responses.

Rather than wrap my legs around his waist, I kept my feet flat on the bed to give me leverage to meet his thrusts to take them as deeply as possible.

I claimed him with my body as I claimed him with my mind.

“You are mine,” I reminded, my voice breathy with passion.

He met my gaze, his golden eyes burning with intensity. “And you are mine, Brynn,” he panted. “Always.”

My orgasm built rapidly, coiling tight in my belly before releasing in a blinding rush of ecstasy. As I cried out my release, Thexan followed me over the edge with a guttural cry that was part human, part something wilder.

His body shuddered against mine as his climax erupted, a hot, pulsing flood that filled my depths. Something shifted then—a swelling at the base of his shaft that locked us together, intimate and inescapable.

Thexan immediately shifted his weight, supporting himself on his forearms so he wouldn’t crush me, his face buried in my neck.

Then he raised his head and looked into my eyes.

“Brynn,” he panted. “Are you all right?”

“I’m good,” I assured him, running my fingers over the ridges along his head. “I have you right where I want you.”

He lifted his head to look at me, and I saw wonder in his eyes. “You are extraordinary, meora.”

“So are you,” I whispered, pulling him down for another kiss. I moaned as his knot inside me expanded.

“Is the knot uncomfortable?”

“It’s not,” I interrupted. “I’ve come to enjoy it. I like being close to you like this.”

I was content to have him in my arms for as long as it took, to feel his weight pressing me into the mattress, to be connected in this most elemental way.

We lay tangled together afterward, our breathing slowly returning to normal as his knot gradually diminished. The silence that returned was different now—not heavy with unspoken tension, but comfortable, companionable.

When he finally withdrew from me, I felt a moment of emptiness before Thexan gathered me into his arms. His scales were warm, saturated with our combined body heat.

“I am yours, always,” he murmured in his native tongue, though I understood the meaning perfectly.

“And I am yours,” I replied, pressing a kiss to his chest. “Always.”

As we lay back together, naked in each other’s arms, I knew I was profoundly happy. The misunderstanding had been painful, but it had taught me something valuable—what we had was worth fighting for, worth protecting, worth cherishing.

I closed my eyes, anchored by the weight of him, and let the world narrow to this one moment we had reclaimed before it could be taken again.

Thexan

Afterward, Brynn remained close.

That was the first thing I allowed myself to register fully, before sound, before movement beyond the room, before any renewed assessment of threat or obligation.

Her body rested against mine with a trust that did not require alertness, and the steady warmth of her presence settled through the bond in a way that made the earlier conflict feel both recent and distant.

The argument had not disappeared. Its consequences remained, not as damage, but as alteration.

Something between us had been tested and had held.

I did not mistake that for completion.

This bond, this relationship, this life she occupied and had now made room for me inside—it would require continued adjustment.

I had already made errors. I would make more.

Brynn had accepted that, but she had not excused it, and the distinction mattered.

She had not asked me to become less vigilant or less protective.

She had demanded that protection include her will, her judgment, and her right to stand beside me even when my every instinct insisted that distance might reduce danger.

I had understood the words when she spoke them.

I understood them more completely now.

To protect her by leaving would not have been a sacrifice.

It would have been control wearing the shape of sacrifice, and I could see that now with a clarity I had not allowed myself before.

I had thought of departure as removing a threat from her environment, but Brynn was not an environment to be optimized or an asset to be preserved in isolation from her own choices.

She was my mate, and if that word was to mean what I had claimed it meant, then it could not be used to justify decisions made over her.

Her breathing shifted softly against me, and my arm adjusted around her with care, not tightening enough to wake her, only holding her in a way that confirmed presence without restraint.

The motion was small, but its meaning was not.

I had spent too much of my existence defining safety by containment.

Brynn would not survive as herself inside containment.

She would fight it, break against it, or break through it, and any of those outcomes would be harm I had caused while claiming to prevent harm from others.

I would not do that to her.

The decision was settled not as a new vow, but as a correction to the one already made.

She had told me to learn, and I would. Because I loved her and the preservation of what she was mattered as much as the preservation of her life.

The word no longer felt unfamiliar when I allowed it to move through my mind.

Love. It did not fit cleanly into any prior operational category, but it did not need to.

It described the condition well enough to be useful, and more importantly, it described the truth without reducing it.

I loved Brynn.

The realization carried no instability. It did not disrupt my control or weaken my readiness.

If anything, it clarified the structure of every priority that had shifted since I reached her door.

My survival had brought me to her. The bond had identified her.

Her choices had held me there. Love was what made remaining more than biological proximity or strategic preference.

It made remaining necessary to the life I wanted.
