Chapter 1

Cash

“What happened with the redhead you left with last night?” Austin asks with a suggestive wiggle of his brow.

“Don’t worry about it,” I suggest clearly closing the door on that conversation. I don’t broadcast my sex life. “Oh, now that I have my phone, look at the video I was telling you about last night. The one of me in the cage with my Torpedo,” I said, changing the subject.

“Fuck yeah. How is she? Amazing?” He takes the bait and forgets all about trying to get the details of my hook up with Blake.

“Yeah, she’s great, but fuck, something just feels off. Maybe I rushed into it. I thought she was the right fit but now I’m wondering if I just got caught up in the moment.”

“You seemed into it last night.” He chuckles. He’s such a sucker for a new bat.

“I was,” I let out a deep sigh, “I mean, don’t get me wrong, she’s got a great feel. She looks good, but that only gets you so far. She was just kind of underwhelming, ya know? I don’t want to waste my time on something that’s not worth it. Is she really ‘game day’ material?”

“Yeah, plus you’re not really the kind of guy to stick with only one…” His words trail off as he starts watching the video.

“True. What if she’s not worth the hype?” I genuinely asked.

I lean over the table so I can watch the video with him as Blake walks past our table, flips me off and heads out the door.

“I take it last night didn’t go well.” Austin laughs as he briefly glances up from the video on my phone.

What the fuck was that about?

I contemplate going after her. Seeing what changed since last night, but is that what you do in this situation? I’ve never had a one-night stand, maybe she’s upset I left. Was I supposed to stay? Do you cuddle after a hookup?

Fuck.

I run my fingers through my hair not knowing what the right move is.

“You gonna text her?” Austin asks.

“I don’t have her number.” I pause thinking about my limited options at the moment. “Should I have gone after her? Is it too late now?” I ask.

“She’s probably gone,” he adds. “Shit man, that crushes the ball.” He clearly could give two shits about this predicament I’m in.

I turn and look out the window, but there is no sign of her outside. I try to convince myself that if I lived here, I’d have gone after her, but in all reality I wouldn’t have known what to say. So I fall back against the back of the booth and stay put.

Maybe it’s for the best.
