I’m led out of the courtyard and into the parking lot.

He turns his body to lean against his car, which, thanks to Luna, I’ve learnt is a Pontiac, and pulls me towards him.

My legs effortlessly slide in between his, our bodies pushing up against one another.

I quickly look around, praying that Harper isn’t going to jump out, pointing and laughing.

Please don’t let this be a joke, or that he’s lost some sick bet.

He rests his hand under my chin, tilting my face to look up at him.

His hand brushes my cheek and into my hair, softly pulling my face towards his.

I force myself to swallow, attempting to coat my dry tongue with saliva in preparation for what I’m hoping is about to happen.

His lips gently press against mine before his tongue separates them and slips into my mouth.

I taste the beer on his breath as his tongue begins to softly massage mine.

I try to match his movements, uncertain if what I’m doing is up to his usual standard of kissing.

I have only ever kissed Mark and never like this.

His hands slide down from my hair to my lower back, pulling my body closer to his.

I melt into his kiss as my body fills with warm tingles.

Am I doing this right? Is he as turned on as I am?

Or is he going to laugh off my poor attempt at sexuality with his friends later?

My hands rest on his hips, and I feel his hard muscles move beneath his t-shirt.

As if they have a mind of their own, my hands move up and push against his chest, lightly gripping the material that sits between me and what I want.

I imagine myself clawing at his clothes, ripping them from his body, and force myself to pull away slightly, stunned by my eagerness to touch this almost-stranger.

I’m grateful that we are outside and not alone in my apartment.

If we were, I don’t trust myself not to let this beautiful man into my bed.

Maybe the backseat of his car will do, I think, surprising myself again.

Brooks follows my gaze to his car. “Do you drive?” he asks.

“No, why? Are you offering to teach me?”

“Nice try. No one drives my car but me.” His brow creases in amusement, not realising that I would give anything to spend time with him, even if it meant learning how to drive.

Mum and Dad tried to teach me, but they gave up and asked Mark.

He took me out once but yelled at me the entire time, so then I gave up, slammed the car door and walked the rest of the way home.

“But I might be able to teach you other things.”

His forwardness surprises me. Mark would never so openly say anything with such a sexual undertone.

From the glint in Brooks’ eye, I can tell that he knows exactly what he’s doing to me, as if he can sense that my legs are turning to butter.

He moves his hand down my back. Slipping his fingertips into the waistband of my shorts, causing instant butterflies in my stomach as soon as our skin touches.

“What things?” I ask breathlessly. I used to think that talking dirty was disgusting. Just the thought of it made me feel uncomfortable, but the way Brooks is dropping his voice into a husky whisper makes me need to hear more. A sensual laugh escapes his lips, and I can tell he’s enjoying this.

“I bet I could make your legs buckle and have you screaming my name with just one kiss.” I lean my face towards him, puckering my lips.

“Not there,” he says with a laugh, placing a finger on my mouth, sliding down my chin, towards my chest, letting it slowly catch on my breasts before finding its way to the top of my shorts.

Frenzied tingles shoot through my entire body as I imagine his head between my legs.

I look around, my heart pounding in my chest, and all of a sudden, I am conscious that we’re having such a private moment outside and in front of other party guests.

“Not now.” He watches me with amusement, and I try to force a laugh.

He brushes his fingers over my stomach, leaving goosebumps on my skin in their wake.

His eyes follow in amazement, captivated by the evidence that his effect has left behind.

I suck in a sharp breath. If I don’t stop this now, I’m afraid I’ll start begging for him to touch me right here against his car.

“Where did you get your car?” I ask, my words catching in my throat.

His fingers stop moving, and his eyes meet mine. He observes me curiously as if I’m a puzzle he can’t quite figure out. “It was my mum’s.”

“What is she driving now? Don’t tell me she’s catching the bus.”

“She died a few years ago.” His eyes water slightly, and I realise I’ve said something I can’t take back.

I’m such an idiot. I went for the most obvious topic, his car, and I accidentally stumbled into something a lot more serious.

Something he probably doesn’t want to talk to me about.

I have to backpedal, talk about something else, or he’s going to say goodnight and leave.

“I’m sorry.” Come on, think of something to say. Just change the subject. “Does your uncle own the building?”

“He does. But he didn’t like living in the city, so when Mum died, and I finished school, he offered me his apartment, and he moved into Mum’s house. She was sick for a while. Cancer. Not many people know, so if you could not mention it, I’d appreciate it. I don’t want people taking pity on me.”

“I don’t pity you.” I reach out and touch his hand.

“I know you don’t.” He smiles, wrapping his fingers around mine.

My heart begins to race again. I knew we had a connection, and now I know that he feels it, too.

He looks into my eyes, and I feel a pull towards him.

I bring my face closer to his as he presses his lips to mine.

My mouth opens, eager to feel his tongue’s soft caress.

He smiles at my enthusiasm, pushing his tongue into my mouth and giving me the most sensual kiss that I’ve ever had.

The butterflies I felt in my stomach earlier now beat their wings, causing a tidal wave of desire.

This is the type of kiss that novels are written about.

Our lips part as we momentarily fight to catch our breaths.

Brooks’ hand moves to the back of my head, pushing my face closer, forcing our lips to meet again.

He needs me. He wants this just as much as I do, and I want this more than I have ever wanted anything.

I let go of his hand, bringing my fingers to the back of his head, and grip his hair, causing a deep moan to escape his throat.

His hands grasp my waist, and his touch leaves my skin burning.

I want his hands all over my body right now.

His mouth parts from mine, kissing its way along my jawline and down my neck.

My body shivers as his tongue glides over my skin, his teeth nipping at sensitive spots I never knew I had.

“You are driving me crazy,” he whispers, pulling his mouth away from my neck.

“Why are you stopping?”

“Because…” He brushes a lock of hair off my face with his fingers.

“I can’t do all the things I want to do to you out here.

We’ll get there, believe me. Let’s just get to know each other a little more.

Looks like the party might be dying down,” he whispers, as guests flow out of the courtyard gate and into the alley. “I’m going to head back in. I had fun.”

“When will I see you again?” I ask, hating that I sound so desperate, but I won’t be able to sleep tonight if I don’t know when I’ll get to see his face again.

“Don’t worry. I live right across the courtyard. You’ll see me around.” He leans forward and places a peck on the top of my head before turning and walking away, leaving me wanting more.
