I walk into the apartment, grocery bags in hand, expecting to see Sam on the couch, but I’m surprised to find Luna sitting by herself at the bench with her textbooks.

“Hey, lovely, how was your day?” she asks, with a warm smile, jumping down from the stool to help me with the bags.

“It was good. I know you were only trying to bait Sam into cooking for us the other day, but you had a point. We haven’t had a healthy meal since we moved here, so I swung past the grocery store on the way home.

Oh, and I have an interview tomorrow at that clothing store you like, Sass it’s 3 am. Without thinking, I swipe to answer the call.

“Hello?” I ask, my voice laced with sleep.

“Hey, what are you up to?” I can tell straight away that he is drunk. A disappointed sigh escapes my chest. I have been hoping that he’d call, and now that he finally has, it’s only because he’s been drinking.

“Ahh, sleeping. That’s what people are usually doing at 3 am.”

“Boring people.” Brooks laughs at himself. “Joke,” he adds when I don’t say anything.

“Did you want something?” I begin to grow impatient, annoyed that he’s woken me just to tease me. I know I’m a loser, unworthy of his attention. I don’t need him calling to remind me.

“I wanted to talk to you. You never called me yesterday,” he slurs.

“I thought you were supposed to call me,” I snap, sitting up slightly and rubbing my eyes.

“I’m calling you now. So, can I come in?”

I hop off my bed and move to the window, peeking out of a gap in the blinds. Brooks walks through the entrance and into the courtyard, holding his phone to his ear, searching for my window with glassy eyes.

“It’s 3 am.”

“You keep saying that, but you’re the one who answered,” he points out, his eyes find me through the gap and lock onto mine.

“I did,” I respond reluctantly, trying to hide the fact that I have never wanted anything more than to have him in my bed.

“Come on. It’s my birthday.”

Adrenaline surges through my body as I imagine what it would be like to have his strong hands cupping my breasts.

The thought alone has me squeezing my thighs together.

I want to say yes. But what if Luna wakes?

She’d be disappointed to see how easily I’ve given in to him.

And he’s drunk. He could brush it all off as a mistake in the morning and go back to ignoring me.

I would be right back where I was, alone and embarrassed.

“Happy birthday, but how about you call me tomorrow when you’re sober?”

“Deal,” Brooks says with a smile, displaying his beautiful dimples. “And hey, Abigail. I missed you.”

Hearing his words causes my mouth to involuntarily turn up into a smile.

“I missed you too. Now get to bed and let me sleep.” I giggle, hanging up the phone.

Brooks smiles to himself and gives me a wave. I let the blind fall back into place and climb back into bed.
