30. Rosalind #2
Father's eyebrows rise at this revelation. "Queen?"
"Co-ruler of one of the most powerful courts in the Fae realm," I confirm. "Partner in relationships that span territories and influence policy across multiple species. Mother to the next generation of leaders who will bridge both worlds."
"Mother?" Father's voice sharpens with sudden interest.
I place a hand over my still-flat stomach, feeling the warm glow that always accompanies thoughts of the life growing within me.
"I'm pregnant, Father. Early yet, but certain.
Your first grandchild will be born into a world where human and Fae bloodlines create something stronger than either could achieve alone. "
The joy that transforms Father's expression is immediate and overwhelming. "Rosalind, that's... that's wonderful news. Truly wonderful."
"The beginning of everything we're working toward," I agree. "A new generation that won't see artificial barriers between species, that will take cooperation and partnership for granted rather than seeing it as impossible."
"When?" he asks with the practical concern of a grandfather-to-be.
"Spring," I tell him. "Your grandchild will be born during the season of new growth, in a court where every day brings evidence of magical renewal and flourishing life."
"I want to be there," Father says immediately. "For the birth, for whatever ceremonies or celebrations mark the occasion. This child will be my family, regardless of their mixed heritage."
"Our heritage," I correct gently. "Father, this baby will be both human and Fae, but they'll also be yours. Part of our family line, carrying forward everything you taught me about strength and honor and service to others."
"Our family line," he agrees with wonder. "Extended now to include connections I never imagined possible."
"Speaking of family," I say, thinking of home, "how is Claire? I've been meaning to write, but time moves so differently here."
"Engaged," Father says with a slight smile. "To Lord Edgar Thornfield. A good match, politically and personally. She seems... content with the arrangement, though you know how she is about expressing emotions."
I feel a complex mixture of happiness for my sister and something that might be wistful sadness. Claire getting married to a human man, settling into the conventional life I once thought I wanted. It seems so small now, so limited compared to what I've discovered.
"I'm happy for her," I say, and mean it. "Lord Thornfield is a good match. They'll build a solid life together, and she'll never know poverty."
"Indeed. Though she asks about you constantly. Wants to know when you'll be returning for the wedding ceremony."
"I..." I pause, realizing I haven't thought about returning to human territory since my transformation completed.
The idea feels strange now, like trying to imagine fitting back into clothes I've outgrown.
"I'm not sure I will be, Father. My place is here now.
But please give her my love, and tell her I'll send a wedding gift befitting her new status as sister to a Fae queen. "
Father nods, understanding passing across his features. "You really have found a new life here."
"I've found my real life here," I correct. "Everything before was just... preparation."
We spend the next hour discussing practical matters—how to coordinate between territories, what kind of relationship we want to maintain, how Father can best support the expanding opportunities for other omega-capable women.
By the time we prepare to end our conversation, I can see that his mindset has shifted completely.
"Thank you," I say as the magical connection begins to waver. "For everything, Father. For raising me to be strong enough to embrace change, for giving me the opportunity that led me here, for being willing to see beyond conventional expectations to what really matters."
"What really matters," he agrees, "is your happiness. And from everything I've seen today, you've found that in abundance."
"I have," I confirm. "More than I ever dreamed possible."
The connection fades and Father's image disappears from the mirror, leaving me alone with my reflection. I look different even from this morning—more confident, more regal, carrying myself like someone who has just secured a powerful political alliance.
Which, I realize, is exactly what I've done.
Footsteps approach from behind, and I turn to find Kaelen entering his study with the satisfied expression of someone who's overheard a conversation going better than expected.
"Perfect," he says, moving to stand behind my chair. "Absolutely perfect. He'll be one of our strongest advocates now."
"He already is," I agree, leaning back against his chest as his arms come around me. "And when other families see how supportive he's become, how much he values what I've gained rather than mourning what I've supposedly lost, it will make their own decisions much easier."
"The foundation of everything we're building," Kaelen murmurs against my hair. "Your happiness, your father's support, the evidence that omega bonding serves everyone's interests."
I place my hands over my stomach again, thinking about the child growing there and the world they'll inherit. "Our baby will never know a time when human and Fae cooperation seemed impossible," I realize with wonder. "They'll grow up expecting partnerships like ours to be normal."
"The first of many," Kaelen agrees, his arms tightening around me possessively. "Our children will help shape a world where the artificial barriers between species are just history, where omega bonding is seen as the natural and beneficial process it was always meant to be."
"I can't wait," I whisper, meaning it with every fiber of my being.
Through our bond, I feel his deep satisfaction at how the conversation went, his pride in how perfectly I handled the political maneuvering, his joy at the family alliance we've just secured. But underneath all of that, I sense his love for me—fierce and possessive and absolutely devoted.
This is what I was born for, I realize. Not just to be claimed and cherished, but to be the bridge between worlds, the proof that cooperation benefits everyone, the foundation upon which a new era will be built.
As we stand together in the growing twilight, planning the future we'll build for our child and all the children who will come after, I feel nothing but gratitude for the path that brought me here.
Whatever I thought I wanted from life, whatever small dreams I'd harbored about diplomatic careers and conventional marriage, they all pale beside the magnificent reality of what I've become.
I am exactly where I belong, with exactly who I belong to, building exactly the kind of future I want to see.
And I couldn't be happier.
