All In

Nolan, Night, The Wire

Nolan, No Apart

The door is still swinging when I hit it, and Voss is three steps ahead of me into a corridor that has already gone loud.

Behind us Eli is saying my name in the voice he uses when a thing has left his hands.

I do not turn around for it. The order took me off the trigger nine minutes ago.

It's a piece of paper in a room I'm no longer standing in, and the woman it was written to protect is moving toward the sound of her own name being hunted, so the order and me, we've parted ways.

The cold-set joint sends its hot wire up through the boot on the second stride. I keep moving. The space between her back and my rifle is the only ground I've got any say over tonight.

“Voss. Left.” She takes the left without breaking stride, because all those weeks in a truck taught her to trust the word before she understands it. She moves and I cover and neither of us stops to ask permission of the other.

"They walked my grid," she says over her shoulder, and her voice is level in the way that costs her. "The false one. They walked it and kept going."

"I know it." The kit on my chest paints the corridor ahead in green and I read it as we move.

"Then you know what that means."

"Means they wasn't never buying your folks," I say, the words coming out flat as a dead-calm bayou because flat is all I can afford right now. "They was buying you, yeah. Keep your boots moving."

The corridor spills us out into the annex, where the coordinators have already thrown the board into motion.

A grid reference goes up on the wall, red, and it sits close enough to the terminal she was working that a man could walk it in ninety seconds.

The trade was a probe. The probe found her.

Every screen in the room agrees on that now, and the agreement is a fist closing.

Eli catches us at the threshold, and he doesn't waste the breath on the order. He has read the room as I read it, which is that the paper is dead and the only asset shaped like this problem is the one he tried to keep off it.

"You want him," he says to me, low, "you take her whole. No half measures, no clean hands. That's the deal I've got left."

"That there's the only trade ever was, yeah."

He holds my eyes one beat, the last of his line dissolving in real time, and then he steps aside. There's no apart anymore.

Nolan, The Choice He Makes

We clear the annex and the gate sequence and come out into the yard where the vehicles wait, and for the length of it the wire can't hear us.

The night is cold off the water and it smells of diesel and kelp.

Voss stops at the truck with her hand on the door and doesn't open it.

She turns instead, and the look she gives me is the one she gave me on the mezzanine, the one that asks a question she won't put into words because putting it into words costs her more than she can spend.

Since the courthouse a thing has ridden in me that I told myself was the job.

I called it duty when it was closer to prayer, and I called the foot of air between us professional distance when it was the last wall I had.

Tonight the job burned down to the studs.

What's standing in the ash isn't the job, and I'm done calling it by the job's name.

"I ran clean out of it," I tell her. Low, the register I keep for the true things.

"The math. That part of me that could put you on one side of the scales and the work on the other and make 'em balance out, yeah.

I ran plumb out of it somewhere back yonder, and I ain't sorry, and I'm done pretending I still got it in me. "

She doesn't answer right away. The water works at the seawall a hundred yards off, patient, the way it has worked every night since we got here. Somewhere behind the wire a generator cycles up and settles.

"Say the rest of it," she says.

"You already got the rest of it down in your mind, yeah."

"I want it out loud. I've had enough of things that live in the quiet."

So I give it to her out loud, in a cold yard with the trucks ticking and the wire behind us, a man choosing a woman with his eyes open and the full price of it laid on the ground between us.

There's no scale left to weigh it on. There's only her face in the security light and the thing I've finally said.

She hears it. Then she reaches up and takes a fistful of my collar, and the choice stops being mine alone and becomes the thing we're both standing inside.

Nolan, The Peak

There is a hold Eli keeps for exactly this, a bought hour off every map, and he gives it to us without a word because he has stopped drawing lines tonight. He hands me a key and does not meet my eyes when he does it, and that is its own kind of blessing from a man who does not give them.

It is one room again. One cot, one door, one window with the blind run all the way down. After eleven weeks of one room and a foot of air we kept between us like it was load-bearing, it is one room and there is no air left to keep.

I step through the door and the last of the professional armor falls away. The weight I have carried since that courthouse corridor drops to the floor with my jacket.

She asked me to keep her alive that day, and my whole chest answered before my mouth could form the word. I have wanted her like a man wants water he has convinced himself he is not allowed to drink. Thirst that lives under my skin, constant and denied, for every long week since.

She turns in the low light of the room. The soft glow from the single lamp catches on her skin and in her eyes.

There is no question left in her gaze now, only the clear, bright answer.

The wait. The careful distance without the taste of penance.

That is the part that undoes me. For the first time in longer than I can name, I am reaching for something because I want it, not because I owe it to duty or survival or guilt. I want her. Just her.

I close the distance and pull her against me.

My mouth claims hers in a slow, devouring kiss that quickly turns desperate.

Tongues tangle. Hands roam. I back her toward the bed while my fingers work the buttons of her blouse open one by one.

When the fabric parts, I push it off her shoulders and let it fall. Her bra joins it.

I fill my hands with her breasts, kneading gently and rolling her nipples between my fingers until she whimpers and presses closer.

She tugs at my shirt. I yank it over my head and toss it aside.

Her palms explore my chest and back, tracing old scars and new tension with a hunger that matches my own.

I ease her down onto the mattress and follow, covering her body with mine. Instead of rushing, I kiss my way lower. Down her throat. Across the swell of her breasts. I linger at her stomach, nipping softly at her hip bones. When I settle between her thighs and spread them wider, she trembles.

My tongue finds her center, licking broad and slow at first, then focusing on the sensitive bundle of nerves with firm, rhythmic strokes. Two fingers slide inside her, curling and pumping in time with my mouth.

She writhes beneath me. Her hands fist the sheets. Her moans grow louder and more broken. I do not stop until her thighs clamp around my head and she comes hard against my tongue, flooding me with her taste.

I rise up and turn her onto her side, facing away from me. I fit myself behind her, lifting her top leg slightly to open her. The position lets me press close, chest to her back.

I enter her slowly from behind, sinking deep in one smooth glide. She gasps and reaches back to grip my thigh. The angle feels intimate and intense. I set a steady rhythm, rocking into her with long, powerful strokes.

One arm wraps around her, hand cupping her breast and teasing the peak. My other hand slides down to stroke between her legs in tight circles.

I kiss the curve of her neck and shoulder, murmuring her name against her skin. She pushes back to meet every thrust, her body moving with mine in perfect sync. Tension builds steadily between us. Her breathing quickens. Her inner muscles flutter and tighten around me with every deep glide.

I keep the pace strong and deliberate, driving her higher until she trembles on the edge.

"Mira," I whisper against her ear. She breaks again.

Her whole body tightens and I follow in releases of powerful waves that pull my own climax from me as I groan into her neck.

I bury myself deep and groan her name as pleasure crashes through me in heavy pulses, spilling inside her. As she receives all of me.

After, the room is dark and warm and neither of us has moved to make it end. Her head rests on my arm. My hand strokes slowly through her hair. The quiet between us has changed its nature. It used to be the quiet of two people holding a line.

Peace and possession both, and the first real breath I have taken in months. I pull her closer, tucking her against my chest. Her fingers trace lazy patterns over my skin. We lie tangled and sated, letting the afterglow wrap around us like a blanket neither of us wants to leave.

Now it is the quiet of two people who have stopped holding it. For one hour there is no wire, no order, no hand reaching through the dark for her. There is a woman breathing slow against my chest, and a man who has finally set down a thing he carried so long he forgot it had weight.

Her breaths come slow and even, and I count them the way I count anything I mean to keep. The hour gets to be exactly as long as it is, and no longer, and I do not spend a second of it wishing it were something else.

Nolan, The Piece

The phone goes off against the concrete floor where my jeans landed, and the sound of it is the world remembering where we are.
