17. Too Close #2

I stop being her protector in the dark of that rented room and become only a man who loves her and has one night before the world takes her out of his reach.

My hands find her waist first, steadying us both as the last of my restraint snaps clean.

Mira Voss looks up at me like she has been waiting eleven weeks for exactly this fracture.

Her fingers slide under the hem of my shirt, palms cool against my skin, and I feel the tremor in them, the same one that has been building in my chest since she said the word water. I pull the shirt off in one motion.

The room is dim, just the low lamp by the bed and the faint silver spill from the county road through the curtains. It is enough to see the way her gaze tracks down my torso, hungry and certain.

“Travis,” she whispers. It is permission.

I kiss her slow, the way I have imagined too many nights on watch. Not the careful, controlled brushes I have allowed myself before. This is deeper, open, my tongue tracing the seam of her lips until she opens for me with a soft sound that goes straight to my blood.

My body responds fully, hard and urgent against her, the ache of eleven weeks of restraint finally unleashed.

Her hands map my back, nails grazing just enough to pull a low groan from my throat.

I walk her backward until the edge of the bed meets her thighs, then ease her down like she is something sacred I am afraid of breaking even while I am desperate to claim.

We undress each other without hurry, though the clock in my head is merciless.

Her blouse slips from my fingers to the floor.

The clasp of her bra gives under my thumb, and when I bare her to the lamplight I have to pause, just breathing her in, the soft rise of her breasts, the flush already climbing her throat.

Then her jeans and mine are gone, skin meets skin in a rush that steals whatever breath I had left. I free the last lace off her as she hooks her thumbs to slide my boxers down. Then she holds me steady as she survey my naked and ready body, while I lock my eyes on her breasts.

I kiss that flush, then lower, tasting salt and Mira and the faint trace of the lavender soap she uses. My erection throbs with every heartbeat, pressed hot against her thigh as I explore her. Her fingers thread into my hair, guiding but not demanding, letting me worship the way I need to.

She is warm everywhere, pliant and strong at once, her legs parting to cradle me as I settle over her. I brace on one forearm so I can watch her face. "Look at me," I say, voice rough. "I want to see you when I enter you."

She nods, eyes locked on mine, and I press forward, slow and steady, sinking into her heat inch by inch.

The sound she makes, half sigh, half prayer, breaks something open inside me.

I hold still once I am fully seated, forehead to hers, letting the impossible rightness of it settle.

Water. The confession she pulled from me earlier floods back now in the slide of our bodies, in the way her inner muscles flutter around me like she is trying to keep me here forever.

We move together like we have done this a thousand times and still the first. Long, rolling strokes that build heat without rushing the ache. I kiss her through it, mouth, jaw, the sensitive spot beneath her ear, murmuring her name like a litany.

"Mira. My Mira," like a litany for these stolen hours.

Her hips lift to meet me, heels digging into the small of my back, urging me deeper.

The rhythm quickens naturally, driven by the knowledge that dawn will tear us apart.

Sweat slickens our skin. She gasps on every thrust, turning into soft cries that I swallow with kisses.

I slip a hand between us, finding the place that makes her tremble, circling with the same steady pressure I have used to keep her safe these eleven weeks. Only this time I am not keeping distance. I am giving everything.

When she comes it is with my name on her lips, body arching tight beneath me, pulling me over the edge with her. The release crashes through me, deep and shattering, every guarded piece of my heart pouring into her as I spend myself inside her. I bury my face in her neck and let it take me.

We stay joined for long moments afterward, breathing each other in while the world stays politely outside the door.

I ease to the side but keep her tucked against me, one leg thrown over hers, my palm splayed across her back so I can feel every beat of her heart slowing.

Her hair spills over my chest, damp and wild, and I comb my fingers through it, pressing a kiss to her crown.

She is quiet a moment. Then her hand finds mine in the dark and closes over it, and she says the thing that will ride with me through every hour of what is coming.

"Whatever they do in the morning, this happened.

They can take you off my wall. They cannot make this not have happened.

" She turns her face up. "When it goes wrong out there, and it is going to go wrong, you hold onto that the way I'm going to.

We had the hour. We took it on purpose. That's the part they don't get to have. "

So we hold the calm for what is left of the night, the true thing not only said now but kept, while the dark stands patient at the edge of the room and waits for the hour to end.

Nolan, The Trap Set

Kane cracks the trap open at 0300 while she sleeps, and I take the read standing in the kitchen so my face doesn't do it where she can see.

The intelligence resolves the shape of the thing, and the shape is her.

The network didn't build a trap and hope she walks into it.

They built a box shaped like the exact way she moves, her patterns, her tells, the small unconscious geometry of how a woman who has run for three years chooses a route and a time and a door.

"They fed the model everything," Kane says, low, over the line. "Every relocation, every safe house, every choice she's made under pressure. It's not predicting a target. It's predicting her. The box closes wherever she'd naturally go."

The cold that goes through me is total, and it has an exact shape. Hunting men has been my whole working life, learning how they move and being where they'll be before they get there. It has never once been done to someone I love.

Now I get to watch a machine learn her the way I learned her, and turn the knowing into a cage.

"Can she beat it," I ask, already knowing the answer, because Kane would have led with it.
