52. Epilogue
Epilogue
Lyra was a high-powered, razor-sharp superhero lawyer who had spent a decade tearing apart corrupt Bureau contracts and defending rogue supers in high-stakes tribunal courts.
She was brilliant, fearless, and completely unbothered by S-tier reputations.
If anyone on Earth could find a loophole in the Bureau's forced depowering protocols, it was Lyra Stone.
I clicked open her private encrypted channel and sent a short, direct message requesting an immediate consultation at Heroes Landing.
By late afternoon, the sun cast a warm golden light across the meadow near the greenhouse.
Out in the clearing, G.I.D.E.O.N. was hard at work constructing Evelyn's new cottage.
His hydraulic arms swung heavy timber beams into place with fluid precision, framing a cozy, single-story cabin anchored firmly into the bedrock.
Evelyn stood nearby in her plum sweater, watching the droid work with a quiet, peaceful expression.
A sleek, silver sports car glided up the gravel driveway, its engine purring softly before idling to a stop near the porch steps. The driver's door opened, and Lyra Stone stepped out onto the driveway.
She looked immaculate, wearing a tailored charcoal pinstripe suit, designer sunglasses, and high heels that clicked with sharp authority against the stones.
She carried a leather briefcase in one hand and a small, velvet-lined gift box in the other.
Her sharp gaze took in the soaring timber lodge, the greenhouse, and the construction site in a single sweeping glance.
She swiftly brought something out of her pocket—a wristband that clicked onto her wrist and activated a protective field around her. Essential for her safety around heroes and villains alike. I’d been wanting to get my hands on that tech for years.
"Nice place you've got here, Carlos," Lyra said, sliding her sunglasses down her nose as I walked out onto the porch to greet her. "Much nicer than the Bureau's holding cells."
"Thanks for coming on short notice, Lyra," I said, offering her a firm handshake. "We need your brain."
Ten minutes later, Lyra sat everyone down around the wide granite island in the main kitchen—including Chloe, Sienna, Evelyn, and even G.I.D.E.O.N.
, who stood at the end of the counter with his optical sensors pulsed to an attentive blue.
Chloe poured tea for everyone while Lyra unlatched her briefcase and set the velvet-lined box onto the granite counter.
"First things first," Lyra smiled, sliding the velvet box across the stone toward the middle of the group. "I brought gifts."
Sienna reached over eagerly, popping open the lid. Inside lay a pair of heavy, polished chrome handcuffs lined with glowing micro-circuits and heavy-duty dampening hinges.
"Handcuffs?" Sienna blinked, tilting her head. "Are we arresting someone?"
"Official S-tier restraint cuffs," Lyra purred with a mischievous smirk. "Sneakily stolen right out of the superhero courthouse evidence locker during my closing arguments yesterday. High-grade dampening tech."
I couldn't help a low chuckle, leaning back against the counter. "You couldn't have gotten wrist bands instead, Lyra? Handcuffs look a little suspicious sitting on the kitchen island."
Chloe laughed softly, while Lyra offered a dry, amused wink. "Work with what's available, Juggernaut."
Lyra's expression turned professional as she looked over at G.I.D.E.O.N.
"Now, a warning regarding super technology in general: do not attempt to tamper with or modify Bureau restraint hardware without extreme caution.
Most of these S-tier devices contain built-in hardwired failsafes designed to overload the wearer's neural pathway or trigger a localized shock if unauthorized tampering is detected. "
"Warning acknowledged," G.I.D.E.O.N. replied smoothly, his claw gently inspecting the chrome surface without touching the circuit housing.
"I shall execute a non-invasive diagnostic scan of the circuit architecture to evaluate the failsafe mechanism safely before any reverse-engineering is attempted. "
Evelyn sat at the counter, her tea mug untouched, her pale fingers fidgeting with her plum sweater hem. She looked up at Lyra with an impatient, guarded intensity.
"Why are we talking about handcuffs and failsafes?" Evelyn asked, her dark voice raspy. "What is the case, Miss Stone? I am fine now. The Bureau achieved what they wanted. I am depowered, I am no longer a threat, and they are leaving us alone. There is nothing left to fight for."
Lyra turned her sharp gaze to Evelyn, her eyes filled with professional fire.
"You are wrong, Evelyn. What Director Henderson and his medical board did to you is an absolute violation of international human rights—it constitutes cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment and the Superhuman Civil Rights Accord. "
Lyra leaned forward, resting her elbows on the granite island.
"We aren't going to get your terrifying, dark-matter gravity wells back—the excision destroyed that specific organ, and honestly, you told Carlos you didn't want that burden back anyway.
But we can fight for something else: medical restitution.
We can sue the Bureau to force them to provide a synthetic gene-therapy procedure that grants you a minor, baseline version of powers—specifically, a low-grade form of physical invulnerability and enhanced density. "
Chloe gasped, her blue eyes lighting up with sudden hope. "Invulnerability? She could be safe again? She wouldn't be fragile?"
"Exactly," Lyra nodded. "Not S-tier offensive power, but enough structural density that she can live a normal, comfortable life without her bones shattering if Sienna accidentally bumps into her or Carlos gives her a hug. It gives her back her physical independence and her safety."
Evelyn stared at Lyra, her violet eyes wide, tears welling at the rims as the reality of the offer washed over her. "A... a minor invulnerability? I could... be touched again without fear?"
"That is the goal," Lyra said gently. She gathered her papers, sliding them back into her leather briefcase and snapping the brass latches shut.
"Now, understand this: litigating against the Hero Bureau will take time.
Federal courts move slowly, and Henderson will throw every procedural delay he has at us.
But I have the livestream footage, the medical records, and Steeltitan's backing. We will win."
Lyra stood up from the barstool, smoothing down her pinstripe jacket. She looked at Evelyn, offering a confident, radiant smile. "That's my offer, Chef Cross. Let me fight for your baseline."
Evelyn wiped a stray tear from her cheek, a genuine, beautiful smile lighting up her face. "Thank you, Lyra. Please... take the case."
""Consider the case filed," Lyra concluded, snapping her briefcase shut with two sharp clicks. She stood up from the stool, her voluptuous skirt stretching taut over her lush, curvy rear as she straightened her jacket. "Enjoy the handcuffs. I know you and I sure did, back in the day.”
“What?” Chloe and Sienna gasped.
