Chapter 38

Director, Project Lumina

Undisclosed Location

“We have received favorable feedback from the Helios Committee, and we are advancing Project Lumina,” the words eagerly escape me as I address the closed session.

“As many of you are aware, we’ve been working toward this moment for the past ten years, in coordination with the Interrealm Energies Council. ”

Eyes around the room are keen, waiting for more.

“I am pleased to announce that after years of research, we have devised a way to harness the anomalies people have witnessed for centuries.” I glance at the agency members and commanders seated around the conference table, their faces lit with measured satisfaction.

A question comes from across the table. “And will the power actually be enough to sustain this program?” an agent asks.

“It will indeed,” I reply. “The data speaks for itself.”

I gesture toward the sensor, and the lights immediately dim. Streams of figures and glowing data plots burst to life in the center of the table. Numbers, projections, energy outputs. All of it swirling before us, promising success.

“We’ve had the finest minds on this project,” I add. “Years of hard work. Although Project Lumina remains highly classified even within our division of government, its results will propel our operations across sectors, ensuring stability and success through the uncertain times ahead.”

I scan the room, noting the quiet awe settling in. “Not only have we successfully harnessed the energies within these phenomena,” I continue steadily, “but we’ve identified two remarkable sources of power.”

And in that moment, I know they understand. We’re standing on the precipice of something far greater. Something far more dangerous than we anticipated. Because with their ability, there is no ceiling to what they can offer us, no limit to the benefits they can provide.

“We’ve been watching for some time, but recently one source has made incredible strides in manifesting her full potential. And the best part is, we don’t need extensive resources to track her. To monitor her. Because she is here—local to us.”

Shock ripples through the room.

“What are we doing to protect our investment?” one agency lead asks.

“I’m glad you raised that,” I reply. “We have one of our own assigned to the task. I’ll let him provide a brief update.” I take my seat.

“I’m glad to be here today to share this update,” he begins, his voice confident.

“I was assigned to observe a specific individual we’ve been monitoring for some time.

A woman who recently joined a local company’s team.

My placement at that business was arranged carefully, without the knowledge of anyone there, as a preemptive measure. ”

He pauses, then continues. “Everything unfolded seamlessly. Her hiring under my mentorship was executed without question. No one at the organization suspects her abilities, or my true identity within this agency.”

A commander leans forward. “And how will you ensure she remains aligned until the time is right, without direct intervention?”

He hesitates, as if weighing how much to reveal.

“I’m committed to being a constant presence in her life,” he says carefully.

“I ensure she has the support she needs, so our connection feels natural. My focus is on understanding her and guiding her. And I’ve noticed, especially with recent events, that she’s begun to rely on that connection more than she might realize. I expect that to continue evolving.”

I can tell the others are impressed.

“Have you researched her specific biological profile?” another member asks.

He smiles, clearly anticipating the question.

“Recently, we were able to take advantage of a break-in at her residence. It wasn’t orchestrated by us, of course, but since I was monitoring the situation, I gained access and retrieved several items suitable for testing.

I expect to have more detailed results by our next meeting. ”

Approving glances move around the table before settling back on our lead agent.

He meets the commander’s gaze, his tone professional, though a subtle intensity lingers beneath it.

“Her potential is extraordinary. If we guide her growth with care, she could exceed everything we’ve anticipated.

I have great hopes for her. And when that time comes .

. .” A small, almost private smile tugs at his lips, his eyes reflecting a mix of conviction and something else. “Her presence will change everything.”

“Indeed, it will,” I say as he returns to his seat. “Thank you for your report, Daniel.” I give a curt nod, pride threading through my voice. “We look forward to your next update. Let’s proceed to the next item . . .”
