Chapter Three Purity
Today is a day of new beginnings. My emotions were split between nervousness and excitement.
Nervousness because today I will be starting my new career.
While the four years I spent receiving my education more than prepared me to do what I do; I just want to be one of the best at it.
I was excited because since high school all I ever wanted to be is a parole officer.
I sought out different colleges that offered criminal justice degrees and eventually decided on Tuskegee University.
Right after high school, I headed to Tuskegee on an academic scholarship.
Four years later, I received my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
I worked in social services for a correctional facility for several years.
Just gaining the experience on the back end before stepping into the role that I actually wanted.
Now that the opportunity has presented itself, I’m excited to change lives in unimaginable ways.
Being in a field such as this one, you have to remain professional.
I think it’s best to always remain empathetic as well.
It’s not our job to judge our clients based off their charges or whatever crimes they committed.
It could easily be one of our family members in the same position.
I’m just there to do my job and help in any way that I can.
I walked into my walk-in closet full of my business casual and professional clothes.
I woke up extra early today to feel refreshed and energetic when I make it in today.
I am extremely grateful that my mom has my son today to make the morning an easier transition for me.
It made me feel good to know that I’ve finally gotten to this space that I have been working towards for so many years.
Everything that I do is for my son. Having a child that’s on the spectrum isn’t an easy thing but I’m here to not let his disorder define me or him.
As I observed my closet for the perfect first day fit, I heard the front door of my apartment close. A smile crept across my face. Knowing that it couldn’t be any one other than my fiancé, Dominic.
I continued in my pursuit of a good fit.
I didn’t know if I wanted to be dressy or just keep it strictly professional dress with a suit.
Eventually I decided on a houndstooth pencil skirt set with a pair of Louboutin Red Bottoms. When I grabbed my black belt to match, I felt two hands around my waist. Instinctively, my head fell back to rest against his chest. He planted a soft kiss on my neck that made my heart flutter.
“I love you baby”, I said softly.
“I love you too. I just wanted to come see you off on your first day. Have you talk to Zakai today?”
“Yes baby, he had my mom call me early this morning”, I said laughing.
My baby may not speak but he definitely has his ways of communicating his needs and wants. I found it to be the most loving thing that he wanted to see my face when he woke up this morning.
The fact that Dominic came to see me off made my heart swoon even more because with a schedule as busy as his, he always found time to make for me.
I can’t imagine the workload of being an attorney, but he definitely makes it look easy.
I turned around to face him, wrapping my arms around his neck.
Our lips met and I couldn’t help but devour his.
The more we kissed the more intense it became in this closet.
As bad as I wanted my man, I didn’t want to risk getting started and not being able to stop.
So, our love making session will have to wait until later when we’re off work for the day.
I slipped out of his grasp and headed in pursuit of the bathroom. As soon as I was getting away, he leaned forward and smacked me on my ass. I put a finger to my mouth, indicating that I like that kinky shit. I laid my clothes down on the ottoman in the bathroom before I began to do my makeup.
Pressing shuffle on my Apple Music playlist, Caresha’s “Spend Dat” began to play.
Nothing like a little ghetto bop to get the day started.
I began to apply my foundation as I swayed my body back and forth to the beat.
I was feeling the hell out of the music.
It was the motivation I needed to go in this job and secure the bag.
This will be my highest paying job to date, so I’m extra excited to finally be able to make the money I am deserving of.
My goal is to get my money stacked to where I can stop paying rent and buy my dream home.
I wasn’t trying to rush the process though.
Especially being that Dominic and I just got engaged last month.
We haven’t set a date yet but when we get married, we’ll likely move in together.
If I have my house already, I can just rent it out.
I’ve been working hard as hell over the years. Staying within my means with my spending, I’m overdue for a new car as well. I’ll wait until I see what the checks are looking like before I make that move though.
When I was done getting dressed, I grabbed my work bag from my closet before heading into the front of the apartment.
As I walked, I began to input the address to my new job in my GPS, so when I get in the car it’ll be ready to go.
I didn’t even notice the huge bouquet of roses that rested on my kitchen island.
The Starbuck’s bag with my favorite breakfast items and a caramel ribbon crunch frappe was the finishing touch.
I was more than likely going to Starbuck’s when I left the house this morning, so it felt good as hell that my man saved me a trip.
“Thank you, baby. You always know just what to do to keep a smile on my face”
“That’s my job. If you were walking around here frowning all the time, then I’d know I need to step my game up. That beautiful smile lets me know that I’m doing all the right shit”
“Indeed, you are. You have a full schedule today baby?”
“It’s looking that way but I’m hoping to be done in time for us to have dinner like we scheduled”
That made me smile because if he had to miss then it would make the day feel incomplete.
All I want to do is go to work and have a good ass day, then come home and tell my man all about it.
By Dominic and I living separately, we take turns spending the night at each other’s home. Right now, this just works for us.
I used to be the type of woman that was so clingy and felt like I always had to be under my man. It wasn’t until this relationship that I learned to appreciate my own space a little more. Like I said, it’s what works for us. Every couples’ dynamic is different, this is ours.
“Well babe, I’ll see you later. I hope you have a successful day in court and wish me well”
He kissed me on my lips repeatedly.
“Thank you, baby. Go in there and own that shit, you got it. I already know you’re going to kill it anyway. Can’t wait to hear about your day baby. I love you”
“I love you more”
After we said our goodbyes, I headed out the door with my coffee and my breakfast in hand.
Luckily, the potato and chives bites from Starbucks are a quick bite and nothing too messy.
So, I wasn’t worried about eating and driving, risking the chance of messing up my clothes.
I killed both bites within a couple of minutes before I washed it all down with my frappe.
Since the day Dominic proposed to me, I began to make my wedding playlist. Every time I hear a song that reminds me of the love we share, I add it to the playlist. From time to time, I like to listen to the playlist just to get all the feels.
Especially on a day like today when my man goes all out of his way to make me feel special.
Just something about him loving me and loving my child the same because he’s an extension of me.
I pressed shuffle on my apple music and allowed the wedding songs to play.
“Spend My Life” by Eric Benet began to play and I immediately began to bob my head.
I love this song so much. Everything about it gives you the feel of a wedding.
I can’t wait to decide on a date and colors and everything else that has something to do with our wedding.
It’s still really early, so I didn’t want to overwhelm him with things that only a woman would care about.
Instead, I toss all of my ideas on my girls.
They love to hear it and love the idea of helping me plan the whole thing even more.
I’m the first one out of our trio to ever get engaged so it’s a very exciting time for us.
Every time I look at this big rock on my left hand, all I can do is visualize meeting my man at the altar.
After listening to three wedding songs, I was arriving at the venue of the job.
Seeing the different people walk in and out, I felt good about the day.
I checked my face and teeth in my mirror and retouched my lip gloss before grabbing my bag and exiting the car.
My heels making a statement as they hit the pavement with each step.
When I walked into the building there was a receptionist desk sitting vertically to the door.
I looked all around the glass building, just taking everything in.
It was my first time here being that I did my interview by phone and was offered the job immediately after.
I honestly expected something that resembled a DMV. This building exceeded my expectations.
“Good morning, how can I assist you today?”, the Caucasian lady at the front desk said to me.
I snapped out of my thoughts immediately, coming back to reality.
“Hi, my name is Purity Banks. Today is my first day as a Probation Officer”
“Oh yeah, I’m Tiffany it’s so nice to finally put a face to the name. I spoke with you a couple of times when we were getting your onboarding together”
“Yes Tiffany, I definitely remember”
