Chapter 4 The Divorce

"If she wants my husband too?

I asked, looking at her. "Do you think I should give in?"

Mom looked away. "I know it's unfair, but your Dad is old and your brother can't help. The business depends on the Lu Group."

She held my hand. "You never wanted this marriage. You've been polite these five years, but there's no real bond. Yining is the real mother..."

"If they get back together, for my sake, can you let them?"

My stomach hurt again. I hadn't eaten.

After a moment, I said, "I understand."

Hope flashed in her eyes.

I pulled my hand back. "I've repaid your kindness. Qiao Family matters no longer concern me."

Tears came to her eyes. "I'm sorry, Ruotang. Don't blame me for favoring her. She is my real daughter."

She left.

I stood up holding my stomach and met Lu Shijin's cold stare.

He sneered. "Mrs. Lu is so generous, giving away her husband and son."

I smiled bitterly. "What's not mine can be taken, right?"

On the way to the Civil Affairs Office, his face was dark and mine pale.

We finished the process in silence.

He said, "I'm going to the company," and left.

He didn't see me squat down in pain.

I made it to a noodle shop. The hot soup helped my stomach, but my heart felt empty.

How ridiculous that neither my mother nor husband noticed my discomfort.

I realized then that in both family and marriage, it was time for me to leave the nest.
