Chapter 9 The Final Call
Before boarding, Lu Shijin's phone rang.
His voice was cold and stern. "Lu Mingyu is hungry and wants the lean meat porridge you make. Prepare it and bring it over quickly."
I was speechless for a moment. "We're getting divorced soon. The law doesn't require an ex-wife to care for a stepson. Ask Lu Mingyu's real mother to handle these things from now on."
Lu Shijin questioned in disbelief. "Wen Ruotang, do you even have a heart?"
"Mingyu is this way because of your negligence. He just escaped life-threatening danger, and you're rushing to plan for your own child, threatening me with divorce?"
I didn't want to argue further, but I couldn't let him slander me.
"I'm not pregnant. You don't have to worry about a child competing with Lu Mingyu for inheritance after the divorce. As for the cake, I truly didn't know. It was probably the merchant's mistake."
The phone went silent for a moment. The boarding announcement sounded, and I spoke faster.
"I sent you the Civil Affairs Office appointment. I'll be there on time to get the divorce certificate. Don't call unless it's important."
Lu Shijin must have heard the announcement. His tone grew urgent.
"You're no longer the Qiao Family's daughter. For five years, the Lu Family supported you. Without me, you're nothing!"
"Wen Ruotang, this is your last chance. Come to the hospital, and I'll treat your words as anger. When Lu Mingyu is discharged, I'll go anywhere with you. Consider it making up for our missed honeymoon."
After five years of marriage, I thought I knew Lu Shijin well.
Proud as he was, these words were a major concession.
Still, I was puzzled.
The one he loved wasn't me. Why not divorce cleanly?
I blurted out, "Do you love me?"
He paused and avoided the question. "We've been married five years without arguments until recently. We're a suitable couple, aren't we?"
The answer I expected.
I let out a breath. "That's because I always accommodated you, obeyed you, endured everything, and put you first. I've had enough."
"If you're worried about the company's image, I can wait to announce it. But I'm divorcing you."
Lu Shijin laughed in anger. "I spoiled you too much. If you don't want to be Mrs. Lu, plenty of others do. Fine, see you at the Civil Affairs Office!"
Qiao Yining's crying voice came faintly from the phone. "Lu Shijin, come see the child! He seems to have fainted again!"
Even though disappointed, my heart tightened for the child I raised.
Before I could ask, Lu Shijin hung up.
The final boarding call sounded.
I hesitated between the hospital and the plane, then chose the plane.
Lu Mingyu had his real mother and the best medical team. He didn't need me.
