“Back to the gym,” Malic grits out. “We’re going back to the gym and talking to my special guest.”
I reel back. “Sp-special guest? Fuck! Mal?” I question when he takes off down the hall, through the lobby, and toward my car with me on his heels. Without a word, he gets into the passenger seat and stares straight ahead.
I climb in after him, shaking my head. “What the fuck do you mean, special guest, Malic?” I ask, starting the car and staring him over.
He moves robotically again, blinking slowly.
“We’re going to have a word with the good doctor about who is really paying her to remove organs from unsuspecting victims. I won’t leave that room until I find out who is paying her fucking bills.
She’s the key to this. If Boss won’t let me inside the room, then I’ll be useful somewhere else,” he growls, throwing a hand in the direction of the hotel.
I lick my lips, trying to broach the subject with care. Boss has been Malic’s world for seven years now. He gave him purpose. He’s never doubted him before.
“You’re suspicious?” I ask, backing the car out carefully. The parking lot remains empty, with only three cars. Malic’s eyes scan each, and he quickly takes out his phone and types in their plates.
“It’s a hunch,” Malic says smoothly, putting his phone away as I pull out of the parking lot.
“Oh, great! A hunch,” I sarcastically say, pulling onto the empty main road. “Are you going to clue me in on the hunch?”
“No,” he says, turning to look out the window again.
“Great. I’ll sit here on the edge of my seat,” I mutter to myself, driving quickly back to the gym so we can get this confrontation over with.
“Well, that wasn’t fruitful,” Malic grunts, wiping the sweat from his forehead and smearing blood all over himself. He’s naked, of course. Because why wouldn’t he be totally nude to torture information out of someone?
“Not at all,” I mumble, taking the knife from his hand and cleaning it in the nearby sink. “You think she didn’t want to talk or really didn’t know anything?” But how could she not? She’s the main doctor working at the hospital, doing these types of surgeries.
Malic cocks his head as he walks in circles around the dead doctor still tied to the metal chair.
The light that vanished from his eyes earlier has returned tenfold.
I’m not sure what brought him back. The torture?
Or the realization that we were getting closer to the real culprits behind the organ snatching.
“I don’t think the good doctor knew anything about the people she was working with. As long as the money got deposited into her account, she didn’t give a shit about who was taking the organs and for what.” He rubs his chin with his bloodied hands, not caring that he’s making more of a mess.
“What exactly is going through your head?” I set the cleaned knife down and fold my arms. “You’ve got this look about you.” A dangerous look, too.
“Yes, well, my brain is turning, old chap. If only we had our very own special agent to utilize and help us figure out the mysterious case of why the good doctor didn’t know who she worked for.
” He rubs his chin more as my brows furrow.
“Someone who could force casinos, hotels, and hospitals to turn over surveillance footage. Someone who could get us an in…”
“Secret agent?” What the absolute fuck is he talking about?
Malic’s smile widens as he sashays to a small tray, holds up something shiny, and turns it toward me.
“Oh, yes, old chap. I have an idea on how we’re going to get all the information we need to find out not only who killed Meredith, but who the fuck is in charge of it all.”
“Veritas? Agent Seven?” I take the badge from him and run my fingers over the golden letters. “What the fuck is this? Where did you find it?”
I’m almost afraid to ask him that question. Malic and I have separate classes. We go our own ways during the day.
Malic grabs it back from me with a frown. “Don’t you worry your pretty little head off about it now, old chap. You’ll know when the time has come.”
“Yeah, that doesn’t sound like a stupid idea or anything.
I’m your keeper, remember? You’re supposed to tell me about all the shit you plan on getting into before it happens so I can fucking stop you,” I growl, narrowing my eyes at him and his blinding grin.
“Fuck me,” I groan, realizing he’s going to keep everything he knows about some fucking secret agent to himself.
How the fuck does he even know an agent of Veritas? Whatever the fuck that is.
“Soon, old chap. Soon. You’ll know everything I do. Now, how about we dispose of the good doctor and go home? I’m hankering for some steak and potatoes.” He whistles to himself as he begins the clean-up process, which means dumping her body and cleaning up the basement.
“Steak and potatoes?” I groan, throwing my head back to look up at the ceiling. “This is going to be an even longer fucking night.”
Malic doesn’t grace me with an answer; he continues his clean-up process, with an extra skip in his fucking step. Wonderful.
