Chapter 11 The Day She Walked Away

Dominic's car cut through the evening traffic, tires humming against the asphalt, his chest tight with panic and guilt.

The image of Seraphina standing just outside his office, the stunned look on her face after seeing the kiss , kept flashing in his mind.

He had rushed out as fast as he could, but by the time he reached their home, the emptiness hit him like a physical blow.

"Ma'am just left for her parents' house with Isla," Lily, the housekeeper said softly, opening the door before he could knock.

Dominic froze, staring at her. "She... she left?

"Yes sir," Lily replied gently.

He nodded numbly, legs trembling, as he stepped inside.

The familiar living room felt alien, cold, and too quiet.

The weight of what he had done, or rather allowed to happen, pressed down on him.

He sank onto the couch, phone trembling in his hands.

He tried calling Seraphina repeatedly, left messages pleading for her to answer, but none of them were returned.

Dominic closed his eyes. He could still see the moment Natalia had leaned in, the hesitation, the almost imperceptible hold of her hand, her lips over his, for a second or two and the way he hadn't moved away immediately.

He hadn't realized how blurred the lines had become.

Now, every second without Seraphina was a reminder of how he had betrayed their marriage , every heartbeat a condemnation.

After a few minutes of sitting in stunned silence, he rose. There was no time to wallow. He had to follow her, to at least see that she and Isla were safe. Grabbing his keys, he left without another word, the engine roaring as he sped toward her parents' house.

When Dominic arrived at the Bennett residence, it was quiet, dimly lit by the soft evening glow from the windows. He knocked rapidly, almost desperately, and the door swung open to reveal Laura Bennett. Her expression softened at the sight of him, though her eyes held a quiet firmness.

"Dominic," she said, almost a whisper.

"Please... I just need to see her. Just a moment," he begged. His voice was strained, desperate.

Laura studied him for a long beat, then stepped aside. "Come in," she said softly.

The house was warm, familiar, but now every corner seemed accusatory. Laura led him to the living room. "Sit," she said, motioning to the couch.

Dominic lowered himself, hands clasped tightly, struggling to steady the shaking that had taken over his body. He glanced down the hallway, half-expecting Seraphina to appear, but the corridor remained empty.

"She won't see you right now," Laura said gently. "She's upset and needs time."

Dominic's jaw tightened. "Nothing? Not even a word?"

"She said she'll stay here for a few days," Laura explained. "She'll speak when she's ready. You can see Isla, but no discussions about anything else."

" please, I just want to talk to her for 5 minutes "

Laura, goes in & returns, saying " she doesn't want to see you today, said she will call in a few days ".

Dominic nodded, swallowing hard, trying to keep the lump in his throat from breaking free. The sound of little footsteps brought him back to reality. Isla ran toward him, her small arms wrapping tightly around him.

"Daddy!" she cried, her voice bright with excitement, oblivious to the tension that gripped her grandparents' home.

Dominic hugged her, his eyes tearing, feeling both the warmth of her embrace and the gnawing emptiness left by Seraphina. "Hey, baby," he whispered, holding on for as long as he could. "I missed you so much."

Laura watched silently, while Michael Bennett entered the room, his expression dark with controlled anger. "I don't know exactly what happened," he said, "but I know you've caused serious hurt. You're lucky you're even allowed to see your daughter."

Dominic swallowed hard. "I... I didn't mean to hurt Seraphina. It was a mistake. I—"

Michael's voice rose slightly, sharp and unforgiving. "A mistake? A mistake makes her leave home in tears? You've hurt her, Dominic. And for seven years of marriage, you've allowed this...?"

Laura, nudged him, "control yourself, Isla is here"

Dominic lowered his gaze, speechless. He couldn't deny the truth of it, couldn't defend himself without sounding hollow. The weight of guilt pressed down, leaving him nearly unable to breathe.

"You can see Isla," Laura repeated softly, as if sensing his need for something to hold on to. "Spend time with her. But understand why she needs space."

Dominic held Isla's small hands, drawing comfort from her innocence, while the reality of his mistakes sank in deeper than any punishment could. He could not see Seraphina, could not explain, could not fix what he had broken in a single day.

Back at his house, he couldn't sleep the whole night, kept drinking, then fell asleep, in the early hours of morning .

Dominic didn't go to the office, the next day.

He drank quietly, his movements sluggish, eyes red and glassy from sleepless nights and tears.

The doorbell rang repeatedly, and soon Lucas and Adrian , entered .

Both froze at the sight of him — unshaven, rumpled, trembling slightly. Lucas broke the silence first. "You look... terrible."

Dominic's voice was barely audible. "She left. Seraphina... she left for her parents' house."

Adrian frowned. "Explain everything."

Dominic recounted the evening, the office, the kiss, the way he had failed to act. He told them about Natalia, the hesitation, and Seraphina walking away. By the time he was finished, his voice was raw, trembling, heavy with grief.

Lucas ran a hand through his hair. "Brother... how could you, you've been soo blind."

"I wasn't blind," Dominic whispered, shaking his head. "I just didn't realize... I didn't stop it fast enough. I love her. I only ever loved her."

Adrian's expression softened, but there was a sharp edge of truth. "It's not about realizing. It's about boundaries. You let someone else into her space. She left because she had to protect herself. That's all."

Dominic pressed his face into his hands. "I don't even recognize myself right now. Seven years... gone. I destroyed it all."

Lucas placed a firm hand on his shoulder. "You love her. That hasn't changed. But you have to accept that she's hurt. She needs space, and you need to reflect. That's the first step."

Dominic nodded, tears spilling freely. "How did I let this happen? How did I not see it coming?"

Adrian sighed. "You trusted too much. You never thought someone could manipulate the situation... or herself. Right now, the only thing you can do is wait and prepare yourself to make things right when she's ready."

"It's all my fault, no one else's ".

Adrian said, "now is not the time to regret, think of why & how this happened , & how to fix it".

He nodded silently.

Lucas, put a hand on his shoulders & said, we are with you, undo all wrongs you've done to her, apologies, beg , whatever it takes. Think, how it came to this point ".

He again nodded, a tear falling from his eyes.

Later, Dominic leaned back, staring at the city skyline from his window.

The silence of his house, broken only by the hum of traffic and the distant sirens, pressed on him.

He was powerless, guilty, and painfully aware of the distance Seraphina had created — one she controlled with quiet, unyielding precision.

He had called many times, sent messages, but no reply.

Meanwhile, at the Bennett household, Seraphina tucked Isla into bed. "Sleep tight, my love," she whispered, kissing her forehead. "Everything will be okay."

Later, Claire came over, sitting beside her in silence, offering comfort without words. She understood. Words weren't needed. Seraphina's controlled withdrawal spoke louder than any anger or shouting could

Her mother offered quiet comfort, while her father paced the room, tension and restrained anger evident in every step.

arrived later, sitting beside her in silence, understanding that words were unnecessary.

The quiet, controlled heartbreak of a woman protecting herself spoke louder than any outburst could.

And Dominic sat alone in his empty house, weeping quietly, a man forced to confront his mistakes, the fragility of his marriage, and the consequences of being ignorant & blind to boundaries and manipulation.

Silence stretched across the city, separating them more than miles ever could, leaving both hearts raw, aching, and desperate
