Unicorn Experiment

Chapter 1

“Can we stop talking about your boring perfect life, and talk about my debauched one instead?” Jules asked as she rolled on her back, a lollipop sticking out of her mouth.

I kicked her in the thigh. “Excuse me for wanting to tell my best friend about my week.” Fluffing the pillow under my head, I got more comfortable.

We were on the floor of my house, debriefing our week… something we had done since we were college roommates ten years ago. It didn’t matter that we lived across from each other and owned a marketing company together.

A tradition was a tradition.

“I love you, Rachel, but you and Bradford are a fucking fairytale couple. He literally tripped over his own two feet when he saw you, and you saved him with your overflowing medical aid in your backpack.” She pretended to retch before she continued.

“I need to put some villainous stories in your life.”

“I’m terrified for what’s about to come out of your mouth.” I braced myself, wondering what she could have gotten into since the last time I talked to her.

Jules cackled, jumping up and grabbing my laptop off the couch, then her fingers flew over the keyboard. I nervously waited for her debauched reveal.

When the laptop was thrust into my face, I scrunched my eyes together, while I attempted to figure out what Jules was showing me. An obnoxiously bright website with smiling couples plastered over it stared back at me, butterflies and unicorns sprinkled throughout the page.

“What am I looking at?” I asked, still unsure what was.

“Holy shit, Rach, we need to expand your horizons. It’s a threesome website, but only for couples who are searching for unicorns.”

“Unicorns?”

Jules kissed the top of my head, treating me like I was an adorable toddler. “Basically, a unicorn is when a couple wants to have a threesome, but strictly for sex, with no emotional attachment. They are searching for a unicorn.”

“And you want to be a unicorn?” I hated that I continued to ask her questions like I was a toddler.

“I do. I’m going to dinner with a couple on Friday night to meet them. The fact that you can be with people, have multiple orgasms, and at the end of the night walk away with no hard feelings, sounds so freeing.”

My heart squeezed for her, and it took everything in me not to show it.

When I met Jules during our freshman year in college, her outlook on life was different.

She had a boyfriend she’d been with since junior high school.

I’d never seen a girl more in love than Jules.

I’d also never seen a girl more broken than Jules when she came back from winter break after he’d broken up with her on Christmas Eve.

Christmas. Fucking. Eve.

Asshole.

Jules refused to let anyone close to her after the assface, and I worried she never would. I didn’t care that she wanted to have threesomes and become some mythical creature, I just wanted it to be for the right reason.

“What? Why are you making that face? You better not be judging, Rachel. Not everyone can find their perfect match their sophomore year in college.”

I internally yelled at myself to fix my face. “I wasn’t judging you. Maybe you’re projecting,” I added, knowing it would fire her up.

“Projecting? Me? No, twat truffle, you were making a face. You know you can never wipe your thoughts off your face.”

“I wasn’t judging you because you want to be a couple’s unicorn, I was just thinking about the legs.”

Jules stared at me, not jumping on my train of thought.

“Three people, that’s six legs, Jules. That’s a lot of fucking legs, and it seems overwhelming to me, that’s all.”

“Holy fuck, what is wrong with you?” she asked as she fell into a fit of giggles.

Her laughter was infectious and I laughed right along with her, happy the tension had dispersed.

“Nothing is wrong with me. I’m just good at logistics.”

“Would you like me to draw you a diagram? Or I can record it for you.”

“You’re certifiably insane.” Holding my sides, I gasped at the insanity that was my best friend. She had a way of always making my body hurt from laughter.

Jules tossed a pillow on my stomach and placed her head down on me. Bursts of giggles randomly echoed throughout my house, and I loved every second of it.

“I’m sorry I called your life boring,” she said, while she scrolled through her phone, ordering a pair of neon shoes she’d been eyeing all week.

I tapped her on the forehead with my index finger. “I know you didn’t mean it.”

“Oh, I meant it. I just shouldn’t have said it. It was an inside thought that snuck out.”

I tapped her even harder on the forehead before taking a deep breath for what I was about to say. I didn’t want her to feel bad, but she was my best friend, and I really needed to tell her what had been on my mind lately. I just hoped it didn’t hurt her feelings.

“I think Bradford is going to propose. He’s been acting jumpy lately, and I overheard him on the phone talking about a special surprise. When he caught me listening, he hung up really fast.” I cringed when I felt her go still at my words.

Her buying finger froze over the add to cart button on her phone.

Biting my bottom lip, I hoped I didn’t do something stupid. I just needed my best friend, and I hated that under her hard exterior she was sensitive and I might have hurt her feelings.

“Well, of fucking course he’s going to propose to you.

He would be an idiot not to. Although he is a bit of an idiot since he didn’t consult with me on what you’d like.

I swear, if he buys you an ugly ring, I’m never going to let him live it down.

And we will go find your real ring, get lunch, and go to the spa on his card. ”

I smiled at her silliness, but on the inside, I exhaled the internal breath I was holding. “Deal. And he won’t buy me an ugly ring. He knows what I like.”

“Like the red roses he buys you that make you sneeze until we get them out of the office? Or what about the house he bought across town from me? Do you remember how confused the poor, simple soul was when you purchased your house across from mine, like you told him you were going to? I love him, but sometimes he’s not the smartest.”

I rolled my eyes even though she was right.

Bradford couldn’t believe I bought the house I told him I was buying.

He truly thought he was surprising me by purchasing the house he currently lived in, across town.

It was the one time in our relationship we hadn’t been in agreement, and the only time we’d actually fought.

“We need to go get manicures immediately.” She grabbed my hand and sneered at my month-old nails with disgust. “Also, after you say yes, I’m going to have to talk to him about him moving in here because you two sure as hell aren’t moving to his house across town.”

I fucking loved this girl so damn much. We bickered about which was the best nail salon, and she won, like she always did. Smiling brightly, she made our appointments for Thursday after work.

“Do you want another drink?” Jules asked, groaning when she got up from the floor.

“No, I need to get up early tomorrow and work on the rest of the Aurora project.”

“It’s ready, Rach. We are going to nail that project like a couple on prom night.”

“I know, but this is the biggest project we’ve ever bid for, and I want it so bad I can taste it.”

“Oooh, what does it taste like?” She wiggled her shoulders and licked her lips.

“Success.”

Settling on the couch, Jules handed me the drink I did not want. “Drink. I’ll come over tomorrow and we’ll perfect everything for Monday. It will also give me a chance to pick out your clothes for the presentation”

I grumbled, taking a healthy sip of the drink she handed me. Jules had made it one of her life’s missions to get me to dress more stylish.

“Fine, but please no heels. You know I can’t walk in those torture devices.”

“No promises. Now drink up and turn on our show.”
