Chapter 28

Maren

Pretty sure I’m not right in the head.

Not only did I just admit to Trevor that I liked knowing he was watching out for me on the cameras he stealthily set up around my home, but now I’m practically sprinting through the halls of his company, hand gripped tightly in his, as we race to his office.

To fuck on the clock.

I’m relieved to see Ruth’s desk is empty as we rush past. I’ve already traumatized her once. I’d really feel like a jerk if we did it again.

Trevor slams the door behind us so hard, I jump, giving me zero time to recover as he presses me against it, his mouth claiming mine.

There’s a sense of urgency I can’t quite shake as I grab at his belt and attempt to work it loose.

Urgency I don’t believe has anything to do with the fear of being caught.

This is about something deeper. Something I don’t know how to name.

I wouldn’t even if I could, because it would probably freak me all the way out.

When I fumble with the buckle a little too long, Trevor pulls his mouth from mine and takes over.

I redirect my attention to something I am capable of removing.

Hooking my fingers into the waistband of my panties, I shimmy them down, unwind the satin and lace from my ankles, and shove them in the pocket of his pants. “Hold on to those for me.”

Trevor pushes down the front of his pants, then shucks his jacket, giving me a devilish smile. “What if I don’t want to give them back?”

“Then you’re going to have to deal with the possibility of everyone at the company seeing my bare ass when I bend over.” I yelp as he grips my thighs, lifting me off the floor.

“I don’t like to fire people without just cause, Maren.

” He shifts his grip on me, looping my legs at his waist. “But I would have to terminate anyone who looked at you. Without notice.” He lines the head of his dick with my pussy, sliding along my already soaked slit a few times before sinking deep.

We both moan, the combined sound loud enough Ruth would have definitely heard if she was outside.

I bite my lower lip, trying to stifle any other sounds that want to come out.

I’m not against a little bit of public indecency, but I can only imagine what people would say behind my back if they knew I was fucking one of the owners in his office.

Honestly, a few would call me a lucky girl. I’m sure there’s more than a handful of women here who would love to take my place.

Maybe I could get Trevor to fire them. Tell him they saw my bare ass.

I grip his shoulders tight, the thought of another woman feeling him from the inside making me a little feral. Raking my fingers into his dark hair and holding tight, I crush my mouth against his, kissing him with a desperation that threatens to consume me.

When I can’t stand the thoughts swirling in my head anymore, I pull away, using my grip on his hair to align our eyes. “You better not be fucking anyone else or I’ll kill you.”

Trevor buries himself to the hilt, rocking against me in a way that grinds his pelvis directly against my clit as he smirks. “I don’t think anyone else can handle me.”

I roll my eyes, because it is just like him to be fucking cocky as hell at a moment like this. “Yes, yes. Your dick is gigantic. Very impressive. So much girth.”

Trevor’s smile slips. “I’m not talking about my dick.

” He changes the angle of his body, bringing our fronts closer as his movements turn more gentle.

Our noses are practically touching as his hand comes to curl against my cheek.

“I’m a pain in the ass, Maren. I’m demanding and controlling and bossy.

I work too much, and I don’t think I’ve relaxed since I was a toddler.

” He rests his forehead against mine, eyes closing as he continues to slowly fuck me against the door.

“Every time I tried to date, I always had to hold back. Temper myself. I didn’t want to be too much. It was fucking exhausting.”

I smooth down his hair before circling my arms at his neck, losing myself in how good he feels. “Is that why you’re single?”

He opens his eyes, meeting mine. “No.” He tips his head, trailing warm lips along my jaw, nipping at the lobe of my ear before continuing. “I’m single because this company will always come first, and it’s difficult to find someone willing to accept that.”

Anyone who’s met Trevor should have easily guessed McKinley Security Systems is his priority. It kind of has to be. He’s responsible for so much of keeping everything running smoothly. If he drops the ball, it affects pretty much everything.

“And I don’t expect you to accept it either. I know one day you’ll realize what I can give you isn’t enough.” He lifts his head, eyes meeting mine. “But I’m selfish enough to take everything you’ll give me until that happens.”

“Don’t tell me what I think.” I give him a little shove. Probably not the best idea when he’s the only thing standing between me and the effects of gravity. “I’ve never said anything about the hours you work, or the way you prioritize this company.” And I wouldn’t. Not ever.

I grew up with the most unreliable person in the world responsible for my entire existence. It was fucking miserable.

“And you’re not the only one with priorities.” I’ve always put my sister first, and I always will. That’s why I’m single. I’ve never met anyone who would do the same, and I wasn’t willing to settle for less.

But Trevor would. In many ways, he already has. Zara’s healthcare depends on him. The job that provides us security exists because Trevor busted his ass to make it happen.

And he bought her a fucking petting zoo because she couldn’t get to all the animals in her chair.

Trevor’s eyes hold mine, then he leans in, mouth possessing mine with an intensity that steals my breath.

Or maybe that’s the orgasm that barrels down on me unexpectedly. Never in my life have I had a full-blown conversation while fucking, but apparently it really does it for me.

Evidently, I’m not the only one who enjoyed it, because Trevor comes along with me, the sexiest rumble I’ve ever heard vibrating through his chest as his dick jerks inside me.

I let my head tip back to rest against the door, eyes closing as I catch my breath. “I’m really glad Ruth isn’t here right now. She would have murdered me for this.”

“That would’ve been very hypocritical of her, considering she frequently comes back from spending her lunch hour with Tucker sporting pink cheeks and messy hair.” Trevor carefully pulls out, then lowers me to the ground. “And she wouldn’t kill you. She would kill me.”

“That probably is more accurate.” I do the awkward clenched half-jog required to avoid spillage as I make a beeline for Trevor’s bathroom. I attempt to close the door, but it bounces right off him as he follows me into the room.

I scoff. “Excuse you.”

“There’s no excuse for me, sweetheart.” Opening the cabinet under the sink, he pulls out a washcloth before switching on the tap. He runs it under the warm water before squeezing out the excess and passing it to me. “Use this.”

“Thanks.” I take it, looking around the room as I plop down on the toilet, releasing the little bit that’s in my bladder. “Your bathroom is really nice.” I do a quick wipe with the toilet paper before switching to the cloth. “But why do you have washcloths here?”

“Sometimes I don’t make it home at night.

And since Tucker refused to retrofit the bathroom with a shower for me to use, I had to find a workaround.

” Trevor opens one of the drawers and pulls out a comb and a tub of pomade, taming his hair before applying a thin layer of product and working the strands into submission.

“Why wouldn’t Tucker build you a shower?” I finish up and toss the washcloth into the hamper in the corner, then dig into Trevor’s pocket for my panties. “Was it too big of a hassle?”

“We didn’t even make it to the hassle part.” Trevor finishes up with his hair and replaces the comb and product. “He said if I had everything I needed here, I’d never go home.”

I snort as I thread my feet through the leg openings of my panties. “That’s probably true.”

Trevor turns to face me, his expression serious. “Don’t get too excited. I’ll be coming home every night until we figure out who the fuck switched your computer.”

And just like that, my postcoital glow evaporates.

“Ugh.” My head drops back as I groan. “I actually forgot about that for a few seconds.”

“I didn’t.” Trevor steps toward me, reaching out to carefully smooth his hands through my hair. “Pierce said Zara’s new bod—” he stops before correcting himself “—aide will be here later tonight. I think it’s important we make sure she’s comfortable with this before we make any firm plans.”

I nod, agreeing easily. “Maybe he can come over and hang out.” I don’t so much mind that I’m being affected by this, but Zara being involved has me struggling not to lose my shit.

“I’m not sure how much we can tell her about what’s actually happening and who he really is, though.

” It occurs to me that makes my sister sound like a tattletale, which she isn’t.

“She does like to talk, and sometimes spills way too much information.”

Like the time she told her dance teacher about my experience with the stomach flu and how I shit myself because I could only stick one end over the toilet at a time.

Trevor nods, his hands smoothing down my neck and over my shoulders. “She’s a kid. Kid’s talk. We will just be extra careful with what we say in front of her.”

He keeps saying we. Lumping us together. And I don’t hate it.

Especially right now, when I’m facing something I’m incapable of tackling alone.

Yes, I could’ve cleaned up the trailer, but I don’t know what I would have done when I discovered my laptop had been switched, not stolen.

I couldn’t have figured out a way to keep my sister safe.

I surely couldn’t have come up with a new location for us to live.

After a lifetime of tackling the kinds of problems most people can’t fathom on my own, it’s a little scary to let someone help. But I don’t have a choice. And honestly, I trust Trevor. Not just with my life—which he has already saved once—but also my sister’s.

And that’s saying something.

We go back into his office, and he situates me on the couch, getting me a bottle of water before sitting down to finalize our plan for keeping Zara safe.

I guess Pierce—the owner of Alaskan Security—is the key to most of it.

He has a staff physician who will be more than happy to write the note for Zara’s school.

Her bodyguard will pass any background checks they do with flying colors—I’m guessing because he will not be giving them his real government information—and is one of their field medics, so he actually will have relevant training.

I don’t know if all of that makes me feel better, but it definitely doesn’t make me feel worse.

By the time Ruth knocks on the door, letting us know she, Toby, and Walker are back from their trip to the archives, the twisting in my stomach has subsided, and my shoulders no longer feel like they’re trying to masquerade as earrings.

Trevor looks better too. Still stressed and intense, but nothing like he appeared this morning in the conference room.

Since there’s work to be done, I say my goodbyes, then head back to my desk. A shiny new laptop waits for me, and I open it, logging into the private server so I can get at least a little bit of actual work done today.

It’s just after five when Trevor rounds the corner, striding toward me. “Are you ready?”

I look around, trying to figure out what he’s talking about. “Ready for what?” I don’t have time for another meeting—or another quickie—before I leave to get Zara.

I considered skipping out early to pick her up from school instead of letting her go to after hours care, but the less I do to change her routine, or make her suspicious, the better off everything will be.

I hope.

I still called to check on her every hour, using the excuse that she’d seemed a little under the weather this morning, and I just wanted to make sure everything was going okay. I figured that would also help my cause when I send her in with a new, scary sidekick.

“Ready to go. It’s time to pick Zara up, right?” Trevor collects my bag, setting it on the desk beside my new computer. “What else do you need? Would you like a drink for the road?”

My brain trips over all his questions. “Yeah. It’s about time to pick up Zara.” I close my computer. “I don’t usually leave until five twenty, though.”

“I know, but her new buddy Quinn should be landing in about an hour, and I figured it would be easiest for us to pick him up rather than make him find a ride.” I must not be moving fast enough, because Trevor begins packing up my stuff.

“Ruth is going to drive my car home, so he can use that to get around if he needs it.”

“Why is Ruth taking your car?” I manage to fish my keys out of the bag before he stacks my computer on top of them. “Don’t you need it to get home?”

Trevor picks up my bag, slinging it over one shoulder. “No.” He holds one hand out to me. “Come on. Let’s go.”

I scoff, lifting my brows at him. “You’re being awfully fucking bossy right now.”

“I know.” He gives me a grin, wiggling his fingers to encourage me to take his hand. “You can boss me around however you want tonight. But you need to get your ass in gear so we can get this off our to-do list.”

I roll my eyes, but I can’t really be mad at him. Getting Zara protected is my number one priority. “Fine.” I stand, pushing my chair into place. “But I get to be the passenger princess this time.”
