CHAPTER ONE

Gavin leaned back in his chair and scrubbed his hands over his face. Files cluttered the surface of his desk, and his eyes felt crossed from staring at them all day. After the debacle last year, he decided to leave the practice. He had branched out and started a solo practice, and now he worked mostly from home. It was far less stressful, and it allowed him to spend more time with Kate—when she was free, anyway. She had been elevated to attending physician at the VA, and she adored her job. It made for long hours and lots of paperwork, but she always told him that her patients more than made up for it.

The soft rumble of an engine drew his attention, and he glanced out the window in time to see Kate's car pulling into the driveway and into the garage. Unbidden, a smile curled his lips, and he pushed up from his chair. By the time he hit the kitchen, Kate was just closing the adjoining door to the garage.
