“I still don’t know about my baby sister with a hockey goalie,” Naomi murmured from the other side of her kitchen.
We had just finished brunch before we all headed out to the first game of the new season with Evan as the starting goalie.
Last season, he’d accrued success and fame, but he never lost sight of his priorities, just as he’d promised, and he loved me better each day.
It was his unshakeable faith in me that gave me the courage to show him how much he meant to me—and for me to apply for my dream job at a large crisis management firm.
While it helped that I was close with many of the Wildcatter players and staff, I pretended I got the job on my own merit.
Adam shrugged. “Kid’s got good rebound control.”
“And you only have yourself to blame, big sis,” I said. “I looked up to you, my dear role model. So, of course I’d choose a man like yours.”
“Could have picked a different position,” Naomi said. Then she covered her mouth, eyes wide. “I didn’t mean—”
“Best to just let that one slide on past, babe,” Adam said with a chuckle.
Evan handed me a banana. “Eight bites?”
I took the first one. “Shared custody.”
He took bite two.
Naomi and Adam looked up, smiles tugging at their mouths. “Soon, she’ll be asking us to pay for a wedding.” Adam wiped a fake tear from his eye.
“Nope, I got that covered.” Evan beamed, his chest puffing up. “Thanks to my new contract.”
I choked on my bite of banana. Evan leaned in, his cheek brushing against mine as he whispered in my ear, “Breathe, Emmy. I’m not asking you yet. This is just a warmup.”
I stuttered in a deep, full breath as I leaned back enough to meet his gaze. “Thanks for the warning, but I already know my answer to that question, and when it comes to you, it’s always yes.”
