I’m going to die tomorrow.
My fate has been sealed for decades. I’m not scared. I don’t wish to change anything because finally, I’ll be with you, my love. I have dreamed of you every night and conjured up your face every morning.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen an accurate photo of you, though. My memories are all I’ve had, but now, there’s a picture of us.
We were so young.
Oh, how I wish I could go back there, back to the table at the inn. I’d rip that directory from our fingers and force that stupid idea of vengeance from my mind. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t wish I could take it back.
You know that, right?
Wherever you are, you know I regret it, and I’d take it all back if I could, right? Life’s not like that, though, so I’ve sat with all my regrets. Deservingly so. It’s one of the many punishments I deserve.
You would tell me that’s not true. I can hear it now in your rumbling voice. You’d make it soft; you saved that just for me. It was one of the many things I fell in love with when it came to you.
That love is still present now. It’s even stronger today because I know I’ll be with you tomorrow. I like to imagine that when we’re both dead, we’ll go back to that time. We’ll be young and free, unburdened by pain.
We’ll finally live out that dream.
