CHAPTER 10

-----------------------------
Mia's body betrayed her long before dawn.
The heat came in waves, crawling under her skin like fire, setting her nerves ablaze. She clawed at the sheets in the servant quarters, biting down on her lip until it bled, but nothing eased the ache. Her wolf howled inside her, frantic, demanding she seek him out - her mate.
Daniel.
Her throat tightened. No. She refused.
She would not beg him. She would not be another slave to his touch, even if her body burned itself alive for denying it.
By nightfall, her strength was gone. She staggered through the corridor, clutching the wall for balance, sweat dripping down her temple. Every step was heavier than the last. The fire roared hotter, crueler, until her knees buckled and she collapsed onto the stone floor.
The crash echoed. Doors opened. Voices rose.
"It's the Alpha's mate."
"She's in heat."
"Look at her... writhing like that."
The whispers cut her deeper than knives. She curled into herself, trembling, nails digging into her arms as if she could hold her body together.
Then the air shifted.
Heavy. Electric. Deadly.
The murmurs died the moment Daniel appeared at the end of the corridor, golden eyes glowing like fire in the dark. His presence alone silenced the pack, wolves lowering their gazes under the weight of his dominance.
He didn't speak. He didn't have to.
In three strides, he was at her side. His jaw clenched, nostrils flaring at her scent; sweet, intoxicating, unbearable. His wolf snarled, claws scraping at his control.
Daniel scooped her into his arms as though she weighed nothing. She gasped, weakly pressing her palms against his chest, but her strength was no match for him. His heat pressed against hers, feeding the fire instead of easing it.
The pack stared.
Some bowed. Others smirked. A few dared to whisper again.
"The Alpha can't resist her."
"Pathetic. He's a slave to the bond."
A growl ripped through Daniel's chest, so savage the walls themselves seemed to tremble. Wolves scattered instantly, heads bowed low, their laughter strangled in their throats. None dared meet his eyes again.
He carried Mia through the hall, his grip iron, his pace merciless, until the heavy doors of his chambers slammed shut behind them.
The world shrank to silence.
Just him.
Just her.
He set her on the bed, his chest rising and falling with violent restraint. His wolf screamed to claim her, to mark her again and again until no one questioned who she belonged to. Her flushed cheeks, her trembling thighs, the broken sound of his name on her lips; it was too much.
He leaned over her, bracing himself on either side of her body. His breath was ragged, his lips inches from hers. "Do you feel what you're doing to me?" His voice was raw, jagged. "I could take you right now, and fate itself wouldn't stop me."
Mia's body burned for it. Her wolf whimpered, begging to surrender. But deep inside, she clung to her defiance. With what little strength she had left, she pressed her hands against his chest and pushed weakly.
Her voice cracked, but her eyes held his with quiet fire.
"If you touch me now, you win nothing. I'll never forgive you."
The words hit harder than a blade.
Daniel froze, every muscle locked. His wolf roared in fury, but his human side... broke.
He buried his face in her neck, shaking with restraint, his teeth grazing her skin but never biting down. His hands dug into the sheets beside her head instead of into her flesh. Every second was torture.
For the first time in his life, the mighty Lycan Alpha trembled.
"I could destroy you," he whispered hoarsely against her skin. "And yet... you're the one killing me."
His arms slid around her, pulling her against his chest. He lay beside her, holding her close while his body burned with need. All night he fought himself, caging the beast inside, forcing it down again and again as her scent tormented him.
And still, between ragged breaths, he confessed words he didn't mean for her to hear.
"You'll be the death of me, little mate. And I don't even care.
Mia's lashes fluttered, her body finally succumbing to exhaustion. Her heart hammered at the raw truth in his voice, even as she drifted into unconsciousness.
Daniel lay awake, eyes burning gold in the dark. His wolf purred, content in her nearness. But he knew, when morning came, he would regret every second of weakness.
Because no matter how hard he tried to deny her...
Mia Reed had already begun to break him.
