Chapter Twenty-Three The Old Guilt

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

The Old Guilt

Eden reached Glass Road before Tollhouse fired.

Barely.

Esme's people had acquired two more trucks and eleven travelers since the packing plant. The lead vehicle braked when Eden stepped into the road waving both arms.

Esme climbed out furious.

"Are you trying to get run over?"

"Turn around."

"What?"

"Sabra's at Black Mesa."

Esme's face changed.

One of the drivers reached for a rifle.

Eden grabbed the barrel and pushed it down.

"Do not announce us."

"Why are you here?"

"Because the reservoir is here."

The words traveled down the convoy.

People leaned from windows.

Eden hated that.

Esme stared.

"You found it."

"Yes."

"Where's Vargo?"

"Inside the spillway."

"Alone?"

"Yes."

"Then he's a fool."

"Yes."

Too easy.

Esme looked past her.

"Why should Glass Road leave?"

"Because Sabra has nine armed people, pump rigs, and explosives."

"We have fifteen."

"Three children."

Esme's jaw tightened.

"Don't count them like weakness."

"I count them like people who don't need bullets."

The old woman looked at Eden for a long time.

Then signaled the convoy to reverse behind the ridge.

Good.

Eden pulled Esme aside.

"Did Sabra contact you?"

"No."

"Why come west?"

"Radio bulletin at Cinder Step said a new public well opened Black Mesa."

"Of course."

"Your message said Pump Six."

"We found the reservoir after."

Esme glanced toward the hidden tower.

"How much?"

"Enough."

"Meaning?"

Eden swallowed.

"More than a million gallons."

Esme's eyes closed.

When they opened, greed was not the first thing there.

Grief.

For everyone who had died thirsty while water sat under rock.

Eden felt it too.

"Who owns it?" Esme asked.

"No one."

The answer came from Caro's note more than Eden.

Do not sell the road.

Esme smiled bitterly.

"Tell Sabra."

"Planning to."

A driver hurried over.

"Movement east."

Dust.

Another convoy.

Eden raised binoculars.

Red scarves.

Dustline.

Her heart dropped.

Mina had followed too.

"No."

Esme swore.

Sabra had broadcast the public well to everyone.

Not to herd them to Tollhouse water this time.

To bring rival convoys into the same narrow basin.

Glass Road.

Dustline.

Old enemies.

Guns.

Then Tollhouse could trigger conflict and claim the reservoir after.

Eden ran uphill and waved.

Mina's lead truck slowed.

Rhett's white bus followed.

Pax drove the tanker.

Dustline stopped twenty yards from Glass Road.

Every old story stood up at once.

Men climbed out.

Weapons appeared.

Glass Road answered.

Eden stepped into the open space.

"Mina."

The medic climbed from the lead truck.

Her gaze went to Esme.

Then the rifles.

"Where's Rhett?"

"Black Mesa."

"Why?"

"Trying to stop Sabra."

Mina's expression hardened.

"Again."

"Again."

Esme said, "Dustline shouldn't be here."

Mina laughed without humor.

"Lovely welcome."

A Glass Road driver muttered something about Junction.

Pax shouted something about Salt Narrows.

Eden's pulse spiked.

Sabra did not need to fire.

She had built this moment years ago.

Eden climbed onto the hood of the stolen truck.

No podium.

No hearing.

Just people with weapons and bad memory.

"Sabra Kest staged the route that led to Salt Narrows."

Silence changed.

Eden continued.

"Hesk sold her Dustline's movement. She fed Dustline false intelligence before Junction Twenty-Seven. She wanted both convoys weak."

A man from Dustline called, "Proof?"

"Hesk's ledger is at Pump Six. Sabra has it now."

"Convenient."

Eden looked at him.

"Yes. Still true."

Esme stepped forward.

"I saw the payment records."

Mina looked at her.

"Before Salt Narrows?"

"After."

"Did you warn us?"

"No."

Anger flashed through Dustline.

Esme did not defend.

"We were cowards."

The bluntness cut through noise.

Mina folded her arms.

"Rhett ordered Junction."

"Yes," Eden said.

Dustline went quiet.

She felt the weight of saying it in front of his people.

Mina's eyes narrowed.

Eden continued.

"He knows. Sabra manipulated the information. He still made the call."

A Glass Road woman shouted, "So what, we forgive him?"

"No."

Eden's voice cracked across the basin.

"No one asked that."

She looked at both lines.

"The water is under Black Mesa. Sabra has pumps on it and charges set on the spill gate. If you want to shoot each other, you can do it after we stop her from burying the only reservoir for a hundred miles."

The simplicity of survival did what morality could not.

People looked toward the mesa.

Mina raised her rifle.

Not at Glass Road.

"What's the plan?"

Eden exhaled.

"Get vehicles behind the north ridge. Keep engines cold. No one advances until I know what Rhett found."

Esme said, "You giving Dustline orders now?"

Eden looked at her.

"I'm giving a route."

That distinction felt like Caro.

Esme almost smiled.

The convoys moved.

Not together.

Parallel.

Enough.

Eden ran toward the spillway.

Halfway there, an explosion hit inside the mesa.

The ground shook.

Black dust burst from the tower.

Eden stopped.

"Rhett."

Then a second blast came.

The spill channel wall cracked.

Water erupted from the concrete in a silver sheet.

Everyone began running.
