5. Andrea
The morning sun streams through the curtains, casting a warm glow across my bedroom. I stretch and yawn, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. Today is Jeremy’s engagement party, and I can already feel the nerves fluttering in my stomach.
Just as I’m contemplating the daunting task of choosing an outfit for the evening, there’s a knock on my door. I glance at the clock and realize it’s far too early for anyone else to be up at this hour. Curious, I make my way to the door and swing it open to reveal Tanya standing on the other side, a mischievous grin on her face.
“Good morning, sunshine!” she exclaims, her voice filled with infectious enthusiasm.
I can’t help but laugh at her exuberance, despite the early hour. “Tanya, what are you doing here so early?” I ask, stepping aside to let her into the apartment.
Tanya breezes past me, her eyes twinkling with excitement. “I couldn’t wait any longer! We’ve got a big day ahead of us, and I wanted to make sure we had plenty of time to get ready,” she explains, her tone chipper.
I smile, grateful for her unwavering enthusiasm. “Well, you’re just in time. I was just about to start thinking of what to wear,” I admit, gesturing towards my closet.
Tanya claps her hands together excitedly. “Perfect! Let’s dive in and find you the perfect outfit,” she declares, making a beeline for my wardrobe.
We sift through all of clothes, and soon we’re buried under a mountain of fabric, laughing and joking as we try on various combinations of dresses and accessories. Tanya pulls out a sequined dress, holding it up for inspection with a grin.
“What do you think? Too flashy?” she asks, her eyebrows raised expectantly.
I shake my head, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. “Nah, I think it’s perfect. Let’s give it a try,” I reply, reaching for the dress and disappearing into the bathroom to change.
Emerging a few minutes later, I do a little twirl in front of the mirror, admiring the way the dress shimmers in the morning light. Tanya claps her hands excitedly, her eyes sparkling with approval.
“You look amazing, Andrea!” she exclaims, her voice filled with genuine excitement.
I can’t help but blush at her compliment, grateful for her unwavering support. “Thanks, Tanya. You’re the best,” I reply, a warm feeling spreading through my chest.
With the outfit sorted, we turn our attention to breakfast—deciding on waffles. We set to work in the kitchen, mixing batter and flipping waffles with practiced ease. As the scent of freshly cooked waffles fills the air, we hum along to the music playing softly in the background, lost in the simple joy of cooking together.
“So, how are you feeling about tonight?” Tanya asks, breaking the comfortable silence that has settled between us.
I pause, considering her question carefully. “Honestly? I’m nervous. But having you here with me makes it a little less scary,” I admit, offering her a grateful smile.
Tanya returns my smile with a reassuring nod. “You’ve got nothing to worry about, Andrea. The three of us will stick together and get through the party,” she assures me, her voice filled with determination.
Her words offer me a sense of comfort, and I find myself feeling a little lighter as we finish up our breakfast. After we clean up the kitchen, Tanya decides to run off and finish up some errands and get ready herself.
I settle down at my desk, intent on distracting myself with some coding work. The familiar rhythm of typing and working on the app helps calm my nerves, allowing me to focus on something other than the engagement party.
Just as I’m getting into the flow of my work, my phone rings; interrupting my concentration. I glance at the caller ID and see that it’s Tanya. With a sigh, I pick up the phone and answer, already knowing what she’s going to say.
“Hey, Andrea. Hope you’re ready, because we’ll be on our way to pick you up soon,” Tanya says, her voice cheerful yet urgent.
I nod, even though she can’t see me. “See you soon,” I reply, a sense of anticipation building in the pit of my stomach.
With a final farewell, Tanya ends the call, leaving me alone with my thoughts once again. I leave my coding work behind, and I head back to my room and hurriedly get ready.

As I stand at Jeremy’s engagement party, I try my best to blend into the background with Josh and avoid any unnecessary interaction with the man of the hour. I can feel my heart sinking lower with each passing moment.
Then, I spot Sarah across the room, and my heart leaps with joy at the sight of my childhood friend. With a smile spreading across my face, I make my way over to her, feeling a sense of relief wash over me as I draw closer.
“Sarah!” I call out, my voice filled with excitement.
She turns towards me, her eyes lighting up with recognition as she catches sight of me. “Andrea! Oh my gosh, it’s been forever!” she exclaims, her voice filled with genuine delight.
I wrap her in a warm hug, feeling the weight of years of separation melt away in the comfort of her embrace. “I know, right? I’ve missed you so much,” I admit, a hint of nostalgia creeping into my voice.
We start to chat, the memories come flooding back, each one more vivid than the last. We reminisce about our childhood adventures, laughing as we recall the mischief we used to get into.
“Do you remember that time we tried to sneak into the old, abandoned house at the end of your street?” Sarah asks, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
I nod, a fond smile playing at the corners of my lips. “How could I forget? We thought we were so brave, but we ended up running away screaming as soon as we heard a noise,” I reply, laughter bubbling up from deep within me.
Sarah chuckles, her laughter mingling with mine as we relive the moment together. “Good times,” she murmurs, her voice tinged with nostalgia.
As we continue to chat, another familiar face walks up to the bar, bringing with it a sense of warmth and familiarity that I hadn’t realized I was missing.
“Hey, Andrea, Sarah, mind if I join you guys?” It’s Alex, another old friend from school.
I smile warmly at him, gesturing for him to take a seat. “Of course, Alex. It’s great to see you,” I reply, genuinely happy to have him join us.
He leans into the bar between us, the conversation flows easily between us, each topic more lighthearted than the last. We reminisce about our favorite teachers, our most embarrassing moments, and all the silly inside jokes that used to make us laugh.
“Do you guys remember Mr. Thompson’s chemistry class?” Alex asks, a mischievous glint in his eye.
Sarah and I exchange a knowing glance, a shared smirk spreading across our faces. “How could we forget? That explosion was legendary,” I reply, a hint of amusement in my voice.
As we laugh, I can feel the anxiety of the evening melting away like ice under the warmth of the sun. For the first time all night, I feel truly at ease, my worries and insecurities fading into the background as I lose myself in the comfort of old friendships.
In this moment, I find myself surrounded by laughter, each moment a reminder of the enduring bonds that have shaped my life. With Sarah and Alex by my side, I remember that these people could still be my friends after all these years.
And as I look around at the smiling faces, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the friendship and support that surrounds me.
As Tanya approaches us, her smile bright and infectious, I can’t help but smile at her arrival.
“Hey, guys! Mind if I join you?” she asks, her voice filled with warmth and genuine interest.
Sarah and Alex welcome her, stepping aside to make room for her at the bar. “Of course, Tanya! It’s great to see you,” Sarah replies, her tone friendly and inviting.
As Tanya steps up beside me, the conversation picks up right where it left off, each topic more animated than the last. We laugh and reminisce together, swapping stories and sharing memories as if no time has passed at all.
“So, Alex was just telling us about his huge crush on you back in high school,” Sarah teases, a playful smirk playing at the corners of her lips.
Alex’s cheeks flush with embarrassment, but he laughs along with the rest of us, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “Yeah, I may have had a bit of a thing for you back in the day,” he admits, his voice laced with self-deprecating humor.
Tanya chuckles, a fond smile spreading across her face. “Oh, really? I never would’ve guessed,” she teases, her tone light and playful.
We continue to chat and laugh together. The topic inevitably turns to Jeremy and his fiancée. Sarah wrinkles her nose in distaste, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.
“I don’t know about you guys, but something about them just seems off to me,” she confesses, her voice tinged with skepticism.
Alex nods in agreement, a thoughtful expression crossing his features. “Yeah, I know what you mean. They’re all smiles and sunshine on the surface, but something about their interactions just feels...fake,” he muses, his brow furrowing with concern.
Tanya frowns, her expression mirroring my own unease. “I’ve always thought Jeremy was a bit of a snake but seeing him with his fiancée just confirms it for me,” she admits, her tone somber.
As we gossip and speculate about Jeremy and his fiancée, the tension in the air grows thicker by the second. But amidst the uncertainty and unease, there’s a sense of camaraderie and solidarity that binds us together like a lifeline.
As the conversation about Jeremy and his fiancée tapers off, Alex politely excuses himself to go catch up with some other friends. Tanya glances at her watch with a small frown. “I should probably go check up on Josh really quick. It was great catching up with you, Sarah,” she says, her voice apologetic.
I nod in agreement. “I’ll be right over,” I reply, offering her a warm smile.
With a final wave goodbye, Tanya slips away from the bar and disappears into the crowd, leaving Sarah and me alone once again.
Sarah rises from her seat with a playful grin. “I’ll go grab us some snacks. Be right back,” she says, her tone light and carefree.
As Sarah disappears into the throng of people, I’m left alone at the bar, the sounds of laughter and chatter washing over me. Despite the chaos of the party swirling around me, I don’t feel the pressure of the stifling atmosphere as expected.
But then, I see Jeremy and his fiancée, walking closer to the bar. It’s bad enough having to endure the sight of them, all loved-up and blissfully ignorant of the turmoil they’ve caused in my life, but now, if they come over here I will have to try and make happy small-talk with them..
As they approach, their smiles bright and their eyes shining with excitement, I can’t help but feel a surge of nausea rise in my throat. I force a polite smile onto my face, steeling myself for the inevitable onslaught of well-meaning questions.
“Hey, Andrea! So glad you could make it,” Jeremy exclaims, his voice dripping with false sincerity.
I nod, trying to keep my composure despite the knot of anxiety twisting in my stomach. “Hi, Jeremy. Congratulations on your engagement,” I reply, my words laced with forced civility.
His fiancée, a tall and impeccably dressed woman with a perfect smile and flawless hair, beams at me. “Thank you, Andrea. We’re so excited to celebrate with our friends and family,” she gushes, her voice saccharine sweet.
I nod again, my grip on my composure slipping with each passing second. “That’s great,” I murmur, my voice barely above a whisper.
Jeremy’s eyes gleam with mischief as he leans in closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “So, Andrea, did you come with a boyfriend tonight?” he asks, a sly grin spreading across his face.
My heart sinks as his words hit me like a sucker punch to the gut. I freeze, my mind racing as I struggle to come up with a suitable response. I can feel Jeremy’s eyes boring into me, his gaze filled with gleeful anticipation as he waits for my answer.
But just as I’m about to open my mouth to reply, a voice breaks through the suffocating silence like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day.
“Hey there, babe. Sorry I’m late. Do you want something to drink?” Josh’s voice is like a lifeline, pulling me back from the brink of discomfort.
I turn to face him, relief flooding through me at the sight of his familiar face. “Josh, thank goodness you’re here,” I murmur, my voice barely above a whisper.
