15. Andrea
As Josh and I find ourselves stranded on the side of the road, my initial panic begins to subside, replaced by a strange sense of calm. Despite the inconvenience of our situation, having Josh by my side makes me feel safer somehow, as if his presence alone is enough to ward off any danger.
But as the reality of our predicament sinks in, I can’t help but feel a sense of embarrassment at being stuck together with a man I’ve come to realize I have feelings for. It’s a strange and unfamiliar sensation, one that I’m not quite sure how to navigate.
Thankfully, Josh seems unfazed by our situation, his easygoing nature serving as a source of comfort in the midst of uncertainty. As we settle into the car for the night, he pulls out a bag of snacks, offering me a reassuring smile.
“Looks like we’re in for a long night. Want some snacks?” he asks, his voice filled with warmth and kindness.
I nod gratefully, accepting the offered snacks with a smile of my own. “Thanks, Josh. I appreciate it,” I say, my voice tinged with gratitude.
We munch on the snacks while we talk, our conversation flowing easily over the next couple of hours.
I find myself opening up to Josh in a way I never have before, letting down the walls I’ve spent years building around my heart. And as I look into his eyes, I can’t help but feel a sense of vulnerability wash over me, as if he can see straight through to the depths of my soul.
But amidst the laughter and conversation, a thought continues to enter my mind.
I’ve known for a while now that my feelings for Josh have changed; evolving from friendship into something deeper and more profound than I ever could have imagined. But I’ve been too afraid to admit the truth to myself, too afraid to acknowledge the depth of my feelings for fear of rejection.
But as we sit here, sharing snacks and stories in the dim light of the car, I can’t deny the truth any longer.
I’m in love with him.
The realization hits me like a ton of bricks, filling me with a strange mixture of joy and trepidation. I’ve spent so long hiding my feelings, burying them deep within me in an attempt to protect myself from heartache. But now that the truth is out in the open, I’m not sure what to do next.
The last time I stepped out of my comfort zone and put my heart on the line, Jeremy laughed in my face. As the years have passed, I have ensured I will never be that vulnerable again. Although I want to find unconditional love, I am scared of the rejection that is sure to come.
As Josh and I wait for the tow truck to arrive, the air inside the car is thick with anticipation. Despite the late hour and the unexpected turn of events, there’s a strange sense of excitement building between us, an interesting energy that seems to crackle in the air.
Sensing the need for a distraction, I turn to Josh with a mischievous grin. “Hey, Josh, I’ve got an idea. How about we play a game to pass the time?” I suggest, my voice filled with enthusiasm.
Josh’s eyes light up at the suggestion, a playful smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “I’m all ears. What did you have in mind?” he asks eagerly.
I lean in closer, my excitement mounting with each passing moment. “How about we play ‘Twenty Questions.’ You know, where we take turns asking each other questions and trying to guess the answer?” I suggest, unable to contain my excitement.
Josh’s smile widens at the suggestion, his eyes sparkling in the dim light. “I love it. You’re on,” he says, his voice filled with enthusiasm.
With that, we dive into the game, taking turns asking each other questions and trying to guess the answer. The questions range from silly and lighthearted to deep and thought-provoking, each one revealing a little more about the other person.
As the game progresses, I find myself growing increasingly fascinated by Josh’s answers, each one offering a glimpse into the inner workings of his mind. From his favorite childhood memory to his biggest fear, I hang on his every word, eager to learn more about the man I’ve known since childhood.
I can’t deny the undeniable chemistry between us, the way his presence alone has the power to set my heart racing and my pulse quickening. But I am scared if we change anything. I need to tread carefully if I want to protect our friendship.
I take a deep breath, trying to calm the fluttering in my chest, before continuing the game with gusto.
“Okay, I’ll start this time,” I say, trying to sound confident despite the nervous butterflies in my stomach. “If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?”
Josh’s eyes light up at the question, a thoughtful expression crossing his features. “That’s a tough one,” he says, his voice tinged with excitement. “But I think I’d love to visit Japan. I’ve always been fascinated by the culture and their food, and I think it would be an amazing experience.”
I nod in agreement, already picturing us wandering the streets of Tokyo together, sampling street food and exploring ancient temples.
“Sounds incredible,” I reply, unable to hide the excitement in my voice.
“Okay, my turn. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?” Josh laughs as he asks the question, his eyes sparkling with amusement.
“That’s easy. I’d definitely choose teleportation. Think of all the time I could save going places,” I joke.
He laughs along with me. “Good choice. I’d probably choose telekinesis, so I could move things with my mind,” he admits. “It would sure make cleaning up the restaurant easier!”
As the game progresses, we take turns asking each other questions, each one revealing a little more—from our favorite books and movies to our most embarrassing moments, no topic is off-limits as we delve deeper into each other’s lives. It is amazing to find that despite being close friends with Josh for over half our lives, there are still things I don’t know about him.
There is a question burning at the back of my mind, one that I can’t seem to shake.
“So, Josh, if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?” I ask, trying to keep my voice casual despite the nervous fluttering in my stomach.
Josh’s expression grows thoughtful at the question, his brow furrowing slightly as he considers his answer. “That’s a tough one,” he admits, his voice tinged with uncertainty. “But I think I’d choose my grandfather. He passed away when we were young, and Tanya and I never got the chance to meet him. I’d love to sit down with him and hear his stories.”
I feel a pang of sympathy at his words, a sudden surge of affection welling up within me. “That’s a beautiful answer, Josh,” I say softly, my voice filled with warmth.
I find myself feeling strangely grateful for the opportunity to spend this time with Josh, to peel back the layers and reveal the depths of our souls to each other. With each question and answer, I find myself opening up to Josh in a way I never have before, letting down my guard and allowing him to see the real me.
As I steal glances at Josh, I can’t help but feel a surge of affection wash over me, as if seeing him in this vulnerable state has only served to endear him to me further. Despite the late hour and the unexpected turn of events, being stuck together with Josh has given us a chance to reflect on our shared history, to appreciate the bond that has formed between us despite the challenges we’ve faced along the way.
“Remember that time we got lost in the woods behind our house?” I ask, a fond smile tugging at the corners of my lips as I recall the memory.
Josh chuckles at the memory, his eyes alight with amusement. “How could I forget? We spent hours wandering around, convinced we were going to be eaten by bears,” he jokes, his laughter infectious.
I join in his laughter, the tension in my shoulders easing as we share the memory together. “And then your dad found us and gave us the biggest lecture of our lives,” I add, shaking my head at the memory.
But amidst the laughter and reminiscing, there are also moments of sadness, memories that still linger like shadows in the corners of my mind.
“I remember when my mom got sick,” Josh asks softly, his voice tinged with sadness. “That was a tough time for all of us.”
I nod in agreement, the memory still fresh in my mind despite the passing years. “Yeah, it was. But we got through it together, didn’t we?” I reply, a note of gratitude creeping into my voice.
Josh smiles warmly at me, his eyes filled with affection. “We did, and I’m grateful for every moment we’ve shared together, both the good and the bad.”
I feel a surge of warmth fill my chest at his words, a sudden realization dawning on me. Despite the countless arguments and disagreements we’ve had over the years, Josh has always been there for me, a constant source of support and encouragement.
“I never thought we’d end up like this,” I admit, a smile playing at my lips as I meet Josh’s gaze. “I mean, we used to fight like cats and dogs.”
Josh laughs at the memory, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “Yeah, but young back then. You and Tanya were always pestering me once I moved up to high school. But I think all those arguments brought us closer in the end.”
I nod in agreement, feeling a sense of gratitude wash over me. “I’m glad we’re on the same page now,” I say, my voice filled with sincerity.
“Hey, how about we watch a movie to pass the time?” Josh suggests, his eyes bright with excitement.
I grin at the suggestion, eager to continue our impromptu adventure. “That sounds like a great idea. Let’s do it,” I reply, scrolling through my tablet in search of the perfect film.
After much deliberation, we settle on a classic comedy that we both love, eager to lose ourselves in the world of cinema. As the opening credits roll, we settle back in our seats, ready to enjoy the show.
But as the movie progresses, we find ourselves unable to resist the urge to critique it, pausing at intervals to share our thoughts and opinions.
“I can’t believe they’re still using that tired old joke,” Josh remarks, his voice laced with amusement as he points out a particularly clichéd moment.
I laugh along with him, nodding in agreement. “Yeah, it’s like they’re not even trying anymore,” I reply, unable to hide my amusement.
But amidst the laughter and banter, there are also moments of genuine appreciation, times when we find ourselves caught up in the magic of the film.
“I forgot how much I love this part,” I admit, a smile playing at my lips as I watch a particularly heartwarming scene unfold on screen.
Josh nods in agreement, his eyes shining with affection. “Me too. It’s like revisiting an old friend,” he says, his voice filled with nostalgia.
And as we continue to watch the movie together, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude wash over me. Despite the unexpected turn of events and the challenges we’ve faced along the way, being stuck together with Josh has given me a chance to connect with him in a way I never thought possible.
And as the credits roll and the movie comes to an end, I find myself feeling strangely reluctant to return to reality.
As the movie comes to an end, Josh and I find ourselves caught up in a spirited debate about the merits of Marvel versus DC. I can’t help but roll my eyes at Josh’s insistence that DC is superior, while he scoffs at my unwavering loyalty to Marvel.
“Come on, Andrea, you have to admit that DC has some iconic characters,” Josh argues, his voice filled with conviction. “Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman—they’re legends in their own right.”
I shake my head, unable to hide my amusement at his passionate defense of DC. “Sure, they may have iconic characters, but Marvel has depth and complexity,” I counter, my voice tinged with excitement. “Just look at the Avengers or the X-Men—they’re more than just superheroes, they’re flawed and relatable.”
Josh snorts in disbelief, clearly unimpressed by my argument. “Flawed and relatable? Please, Marvel is all about flashy special effects and shallow storytelling,” he retorts, his tone dismissive.
I bristle at his words, feeling a surge of indignation rise within me. “Shallow storytelling? Have you even seen ‘Avengers: Endgame’ or ‘Black Panther’?” I shoot back, unable to contain my frustration. “They’re not just movies, they’re cultural phenomena that have resonated with audiences around the world.”
Josh rolls his eyes at my impassioned defense of Marvel, clearly unmoved by my argument. “Please, ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ are on a whole other level,” he counters, his tone smug. “They’re cinematic masterpieces that have stood the test of time.”
I scoff at his assertion, unable to believe that he’s comparing DC’s offerings to Marvel’s groundbreaking films. “Sure, ‘The Dark Knight’ was great, but it’s just one movie,” I retort, my voice tinged with sarcasm. “Marvel has built an entire cinematic universe that spans over a decade—that’s no small feat.”
Josh shakes his head in disbelief, clearly unwilling to concede defeat. “Agree to disagree, Andrea. But mark my words, DC will always be superior to Marvel,” he says, his voice filled with conviction.
I open my mouth to argue further, but before I can say another word, we’re interrupted by the sound of approaching headlights. Help has finally arrived, and with it, an end to our spirited debate.
But amidst the turmoil of my thoughts, there’s a sudden commotion outside the car, jolting me back to reality. Peering out the window, I see a tow truck pulling up alongside us, its lights flashing brightly in the darkness.
“It looks like help has arrived,” Josh says, his voice filled with relief as he steps out of the car to speak with the driver.
I watch as he converses with the driver, his easy smile and friendly demeanor putting me at ease. Despite the late hour and the inconvenience of our situation, Josh remains unfailingly polite and courteous, his kindness shining like a beacon in the darkness.
As the tow truck driver sets to work fixing the car, I find myself feeling strangely grateful for our unexpected detour. And as we finally set off towards our destination, I can’t help but feel a sense of optimism building within me, knowing that no matter what challenges lie ahead, I’ll always want Josh in my life.
