Chapter 5
“We did it, Muffin!” I kicked the door closed behind me and squealed with excitement. I couldn’t believe I’d gotten the job.
“Our lives are about to change forever!” I picked her up and squeezed her a little too tightly. She meowed and jumped out of my arms, looking at me like I’d grown a second head.
I couldn’t help the cheesy grin that spanned from ear to freaking ear. I must have looked like a demented fool to Muffin. The hottest man I’d ever laid eyes on offered me a job. Hell, it wasn’t just a job. It was a chance at a new life. I wasn’t about to mess it up!
I felt like a complete idiot staring at him, drooling over his rugged charm and the way his confident demeanor made my heart race.
I had barely formed a coherent sentence when we were at the diner, and now I was left replaying every moment in my mind, wishing I had said more or less in certain instances.
I mean, come on, Audrey! Get it together!
As I sat on my bed, staring at my suitcase, a whirlwind of thoughts raced through my mind.
I couldn’t believe I was actually packing my things to move to Arrhythmia with him.
The idea felt surreal, as if I were caught in a strange dream where everything was just a little too perfect.
Yet there was also a tinge of fear—a nagging doubt that tugged at my mind.
I was moving states away with a complete stranger.
What if this was just a trap? What if he were some sort of psycho killer looking for young, naive women to lure back to his whatever?
Mack had offered to drive me back to Arrhythmia in the morning.
He was renting a truck so I could take whatever I wanted.
I glanced around my apartment at the hand-me-down furniture and dollar store decorations.
My fluffy black cat was my only real companion, and the thought of leaving her behind was simply not an option.
I glanced at Muffin, who was lazily curled up in her favorite sunspot by the window. “Looks like we’re going on an adventure, Muffin,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady despite the butterflies in my stomach.
“Meow,” she replied, blinking slowly as if she understood the magnitude of the change ahead.
“Yeah, I know. It’s a lot to take in,” I continued, scratching her behind her ears.
“But think about it! A new life, new opportunities, and we’ll be away from…
him.” The thought of James sent a wave of anger through me, and I couldn’t help but scowl.
What the hell I ever saw in him was beyond me.
I couldn’t make sense of why I had ever dated him to begin with.
Muffin purred, nuzzling against my hand, as if she were reassuring me that everything would be okay.
I drew in a deep breath, trying to calm the sudden storm of emotions swirling within me.
This was the fresh start that I’d dreamed of.
I would not waste another second thinking about all the mistakes I’d made.
After a few minutes of packing, I decided to do a little research on Arrhythmia.
I grabbed my laptop and popped open a browser.
“Arrhythmia, Texas,” I typed, curiosity bubbling within me.
But to my surprise, the results were sparse.
There were no real articles, no travel logs, and nothing that gave me a clear picture of what to expect.
“That’s weird,” I said. “Am I spelling it wrong or something?”
Frowning, I tried a few different searches, but nothing else came up. “What the heck?” I muttered to myself, frustration creeping in. “Is this town even real?”
Determined to find out more, I searched deeper, using phrases like “hidden towns in Texas” and “mysterious places.” Finally, I stumbled upon something intriguing—an obscure forum discussing urban legends and lore about Arrhythmia.
“The town for castaway paranormals…” I read aloud, my brow furrowing. “Is this real?”
I scrolled through the forum, feeling both astonished and skeptical.
The conversations were filled with tales of werewolves, witches, and vampires living in secrecy, coexisting under magical wards that kept them hidden from the human world.
Part of me was thrilled at the possibility of living among mythical creatures, while another part of me felt wary.
I mean, I loved a good paranormal romance, but that was all just fiction. Right?
“What the fuck? This can’t be real?” Panic flooded my brain. “Werewolves? Vampires? Seriously? There’s no fucking way.” Now, I considered myself a person with a healthy imagination, but this was beyond even me.
I fell deeper into the proverbial rabbit hole—reading forum after forum about Arrhythmia.
“What am I getting myself into?” I whispered, biting my lip as I continued my free fall. The idea of moving to a place filled with beings I had only heard about in stories was both exciting and terrifying.
“Muffin, what do you think?” I asked, glancing down at my cat. “Should we pack our bags and go live in a town full of monsters?”
Muffin blinked at me, her expression nonchalant, clearly unfazed by the idea. I chuckled, shaking my head. “Yeah, you’re probably right. It could be fun… or it could be a disaster.”
“I’ve got to stop.” I slammed my laptop shut and tossed it onto the bed.
Sitting in silence for a moment, I let the weight of the decision I was about to make fully sink in.
I had never heard of Arrhythmia before today, true.
There was a lot of weird shit online about it.
Could I trust it? I had no idea. Honestly.
I wanted out of this shithole more than anything. I had no job, no savings, no boyfriend, and no future. Did that mean I wanted to jump into some weird-ass paranormal town, if what I read was even real?
That was the million-dollar question.
I thought more about my meeting with Mack. There was something about him that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. He was different than anyone I’d ever met. “Oh my God! Is he a Vampire?” The question flew from my mouth as I continued packing the things I wanted to take with me.
“Maybe that’s why he was so damn good looking?” I wondered. Then my knowledge of vampires kicked in, and I tossed the idea from my brain just as quickly as it had entered. He couldn’t have been a vampire. He was out in the sunlight.
I felt like I could trust Mack. The way he stood up to James. He didn’t have to do that. “I don’t know another guy who would have done that for me,” I said to Muffin.
“Meow,” she was gracious enough to reply.
I let my thoughts wander as I continued packing my things.
I grabbed clothes, shoes, and a few personal items that held sentimental value.
As I folded each piece of clothing, I imagined the possibilities that awaited me in Arrhythmia.
A new job, new experiences, and a fresh start—this was my chance to rewrite my story.
The chance that I so desperately wanted.
After a couple of hours, my suitcase was filled to the brim, and I had packed as many boxes as I could. I felt a sense of accomplishment. I glanced at the clock and realized it was getting late. Mack would be arriving early in the morning, and I wanted to be ready.
“Muffin, let’s get some rest,” I said, stifling a yawn. “We’ve got a big day ahead of us.”
As I tucked myself into bed, my mind raced with thoughts of Mack and the new life waiting for me. Excitement coursed through my veins, but deep down, I couldn’t shake the feeling of uncertainty. Would I fit in? Would I be safe?
But as I drifted off to sleep, those worries started to fade. Tomorrow was the beginning of a new chapter in my life, and I was bound and determined to make the most of it.
I had just started to drift off when a loud pounding on my front door jolted me awake. My heart raced as I sat up, disoriented.
“What the actual fuck?” I said as I glanced at the clock—it was well past midnight.
“Open up, Audrey! I know you’re in there!”
James. My stomach dropped. I scrambled out of bed and rushed to the door, but I knew I didn’t want to face him right now.
“Go away, James!” I shouted, my voice shaky. “I’m not in the mood for this shit!”
“I need to talk to you! I won’t take no for an answer!” He sounded like he was drunker than a skunk. His voice was loud and aggressive, echoing through my small apartment.
The pounding continued, and I felt a wave of panic wash over me. I glanced at Muffin, who had jumped down from her perch and was now hiding beneath the couch. I couldn’t let him in. I couldn’t deal with this right now.
Before I could think, I heard a loud crack—he was trying to break the door down. I gasped, my heart racing as adrenaline surged through me.
“James, stop it! Don’t you dare!” I screamed, backing away from the door.
With a final crash, the door flew open, and he stumbled in, his eyes wild and frantic. “Why are you ignoring me, Audrey?” he demanded, his words slurring together.
“Because I don’t want to talk to you!” I shouted, stepping back as he advanced toward me. My mind raced—this couldn’t be happening. James had well and truly lost his ever-loving fucking mind.
“Just hear me out!” he insisted, the tension in the air palpable. “We need to sort this out. You can’t just leave me like this!” He looked around and saw my suitcases stacked up neatly in the corner. “Where the fuck do you think you’re going?” He sneered at me.
I kept my mouth shut. There was no way I was telling him where the hell I was going.
He took a step closer, his demeanor shifting from anger to something more pleading. “We were good together. You can’t just throw that away!”
My back hit the wall, and I felt a surge of fear. “Get away from me, James!” I yelled, my voice trembling as I tried to push him away from me.
Just then, a low, dangerous growl emanated from the doorway, and I turned to see Mack standing there, his presence commanding and fierce. It was almost as if I could feel the power coming from him.
