Rune

My eyes snap open.

The weight in my chest moves. Lifts. Pulling me until I’m sitting.

It’s dark. The clock says four in the morning.

And I…

I need to get up.

Half awake, moving because I feel like I have to, I fling my blankets back and climb out of bed.

My steps are quiet on the wood floor.

I keep my eyes mostly closed, but instead of walking me to the bathroom, my feet take me around the foot of the bed.

My brows furrow.

Am I still sleeping?

Then my steps stop. In front of my full-length mirror.

I reach up and rub at my eyes.

Am I sleepwalking?

I blink. And a flash of light shines off the mirror.

I blink again as alertness floods my system.

That flash of light shone through the mirror.

“What—”

I move closer.

My heart starts to beat faster.

Nothing slows it.

“Hello?” I whisper, feeling completely crazy. “Are you there?”

The reflection is just me. But that light… It was real.

I press my hands to the glass.
