Rune

The gunfire goes silent, making our footsteps sound loud, but we keep running.

Orion rounds a cluster of trees, taking us farther away from the fight.

Nix is at my side, and Bridget is behind us.

We turn where Orion turned. And a vampire jumps straight for us.

But Bridget beats him.

Her shoulder brushes mine as she jumps forward, between me and Nix.

She crashes into the guard, and they twist in the air before slamming to the ground.

We run past.

It was the plan. I hate it, but we all promised to stick to the plan. It was the only way Barth agreed to bring us. And it was apparently the same plan the brothers had in mind.

I glance back and see Aunt Bridget pin the vampire face down.

I stumble, gripping Nix for balance. Then I glance back again.

Bridget lifts her head, her mouth covered in blood, then her hands start to glow.

Badass.

Orion growls and picks up speed.

I run faster.

I wish I could jump as well as Nix does, but we’re following Orion, who is on foot, so I won’t feel bad about it.

Then I spot what he’s aiming for.

Two vampires stand in front of some type of bunker entrance. A metal door surrounded by cement walls angling into the ground.

The kid has to be down there.

Orion leaps and tackles both vampires.

Nix and I aim for the door.
