Chapter 54

Marlena gripped her head, falling off her office chair onto the floor. Her knees hit so hard she knew she’d scraped them enough to draw blood.

“Stop him!”

“Find him!”

“He cannot go through with it!”

The voices in her head—the gods—screamed, their panicked cries sending a roll of nausea through Marlena’s stomach.

“Who?” she asked through gritted teeth, swallowing down bile.

This had never happened before.

Marlena couldn’t grasp on to any of her powers, couldn’t quiet the screams and pure fear raging inside her head. It wasn’t her fear she was feeling, she finally realized.

It was the gods’.

What would scare the gods so badly?

“Stop him!”

“Stop him!”

Marlena hissed, stumbling at the pain shooting through her mind.

“Stop who?!” she screamed, her throat sore.

“Him. Him. Him.”

Marlena had no idea what they were saying, but she couldn’t push them away, couldn’t get her mind to be her own again.

“The mines.”

“He’ll answer the summon in the mines.”

“It’s as close as you can get to his throne.”

“Who is summoning? What… summoning?” She had a hard time finding the words.

Marlena crawled, trying to use her power to travel—to take herself right to the mines to find out for herself, but the pain kept her pinned to the floor, sinking its teeth in.

“He wants us. He’ll take us. All of us!”

“What does that even fucking mean?!” Marlena screeched in a mix of pain and anger.

“Go to him. Stop him!”

Marlena couldn’t tell the voices apart.
