Chapter 37
THIRTY-SEVEN
MAVEN
I can honestly say I’m not someone who’s easily shaken.
I’ve learned when to control myself and when to let my anger loose.
He picks me up and pins me against the shower wall, then spears his fingers through my blue hair. I feel his cock nudging at my entrance, and at this moment, I can honestly say I’ve completely forgotten about the two dead bodies in the living room.
“You are such a fucking badass,” he whispers in my ear as he slides into me. I gasp when he bottoms out and then just holds himself still inside me. His hand brushes away my hair as I stare at him.
“I know. Thanks for acknowledging it.” I smirk at him. “Maybe this marriage can work. If you continue to stroke my ego, that is.”
“I’m sure planning on stroking something.” He lifts and then lowers me on his cock. My hands are glued to his shoulders, and my nails dig into his flesh as he moves me up and down at the most perfect pace. And then he kisses me like I’m the air he needs to breathe.
His hands grip my ass, squeezing tight, as we continue to rock together. My clit rubs against his lower abdomen, and my nipples scrape against his chest, and the friction is almost too much to bear.
He tears his mouth from mine and then trails kisses down to my neck.
I feel him sucking, then we’re both coming so fucking hard that I can’t help the scream that escapes my lips before my head lolls to his shoulder.
We stay like that for a second before he lifts me off of his cock and places me back on my feet.
“Victor is out there waiting for me. I have to go. Will you be okay? Should I call your sister?”
I brush off his concern. “Yes, I’ll be fine. And, no, don’t call her. I’m going to nap, and I’ll visit her in the morning,” I tell him.
“Okay. I’ll keep an eye on you through the cameras while you’re sleeping. Keep your phone’s ringer on so you’ll hear me call if I see anything I don’t like.”
“Boston?”
“Yes?” He pushes my hair back from my face.
“What exactly is the hunt?”
He tenses for a moment but relaxes quickly. “Twice a year, all the members of the Forsaken Society join together in what is called the hunt,” he tells me as the warm water washes over my body.
“You don’t hunt animals, do you?” I ask, sure I know the answer.
“We do not.” He shakes his head.
“I figured as much.” I grab the soap and start washing myself.
“Does that bother you?” he questions.
“No, of course it doesn’t.” He slowly runs a hand down my back. “Would they put me in the hunt if they find out what I did?” I ask.
“Yes. In a heartbeat. Reon’s wife was chosen as prey because he shared too much with her, and he decided to marry her over Soren’s sister.”
“And Soren? He’s in charge, correct?”
“Yes, he is.” He nods, and I turn off the water. I hold out my hand, and he grabs a towel and hands it to me.
“Your house is currently a mess,” I say, pointing out the obvious.
“I’m well aware.” He smiles at me.
“You hate mess.”
“I do. But your mess…” I wait for him to finish, but a knock on the bathroom door interrupts us.
“Bodies are gone,” Victor calls through the door.
Boston wraps a towel around his waist as he heads to the door. I follow behind him with a large, fluffy towel covering me. Victor stands in the bedroom doorway, taking up most of the space with how large he is.
“I’ll be right out,” Boston says, and Victor’s gaze flicks to me. “Stop looking at my wife, Victor.”
“Hope the cleanup wasn’t too much trouble for you, Victor,” I chirp with a smile.
He eyes me like I’ve gone crazy and shakes his head before he turns and leaves the room.
Boston closes the door and then faces me.
“Why’d you tell him to stop looking at me?” I ask, confused.
“Because you’re in nothing but a towel.”
“So?”
“So, what’s under that towel is mine. And if a man ever thinks he can have what is under it…” He steps close to me. “I’ll fucking kill him.”
“How romantic,” I gush, which pulls a small smile from his lips.
I lean up and give him a quick kiss before I go to his dresser. I drop the towel, pull out one of his shirts, and slide it on. “You don’t mind, do you?” I ask. “I didn’t get a chance to unpack everything.”
“I’ll unpack everything for you,” he offers. “I know you hate to do it.”
“Thanks, Detective,” I say, then climb into bed.
I watch as he gets dressed, taking him in.
I can honestly say he’s growing on me, and even though I tried not to, I like the man.
Hell, I like him so much I let him put his cock inside me more than once, and will continue to do so because it feels fucking fabulous.
Once he has his shirt buttoned, he walks around the bed and leans down to kiss me. Our lips linger a little longer than necessary, but eventually he pulls away and heads toward the door. As he opens it, he looks back at me, and I note the slight curve of his lips.
“What?” I ask.
“I like you in my bed.”
“Good, because it’s comfy and I’m tired.”
“I put your phone on the charger. It’s on the bedside table next to you.
” He nods to the nightstand and then leaves, shutting the door behind him.
I hear the front door open, and a notification flashes on my phone, letting me know someone is at the front.
I click it, then I watch him get in his car, and another car drives off in front of him.
I go to put the phone down just as it rings.
“So… I got another email,” Carrie says.
“Okay,” I answer.
“I’m not sure you’ll like this job request.”
“Why wouldn’t I like it? You know I don’t care. You tell me the details, and we leave it at that, no questions, no emotions.”
“No, Maven, you should hear this one.”
I stifle a yawn. “Just send it to me. I’ll do it in the morning.”
“It’s Boston,” she blurts.
I sit up in the bed, shocked at what I just heard. “What do you mean?” I throw the blanket off and go looking for my shorts. I start opening boxes, only to get mad when the first one is just shirts. “Fuck these boxes.”
“Maven, calm down. What are you doing?”
“Trying to find clothes so I can kill whoever thinks it would be a good idea to put a hit on my husband. And you? How are you even able to call me at this time?” I grumble, and the phone falls from where I have it wedged between my shoulder and ear.
I don’t bother picking it up as I tear another box open, only to find it full of sleepwear.
The clothes spill out of it as I drop it to the floor.
I search through several more boxes until I come upon the one with jeans.
I grab a pair, slide them on, then pick up my phone.
“Carrie, are you still there?”
“Yes. I asked my hacker to look into who it came from. He said to give him a few minutes. And as for me contacting you outside the normal time, I may or may not be on good terms with one of the nurses. They also let me use the computers when no one is here. I helped them fix one once.”
The hacker she pays is very fucking smart and evidently good at his job. That’s why she pays him a very large chunk of what we get paid.
And what does she mean she’s on good terms with a nurse? She better not be fucking someone in there; she’s there to get better.
I stalk down the hall to my shoe room, find my red killing heels, and slip them on. Then I head outside to get on my bike. But I have to wait for Carrie to give me more information about where I’m supposed to go.
Should I call Boston? It might be a good idea to warn him, even though I’m planning on taking care of the problem before it can get out of hand. I’m not sure where he had to go this late, but it could be work or maybe something to do with the Forsaken.
“Do you think someone knows?” I ask.
“Knows what?”
“Who I am.” I still, and when she doesn’t answer right away, I know she’s thinking the same thing.
“I don’t know how that would be possible,” she says.
“The client paid a lot for the contract on Boston. More than usual. But I assumed it was because they know he’s on the police force, and that attracts a higher rate.
” She pauses, and I can hear the clicking of a keyboard. “I just rejected the job, which means…”
“If they’re serious, they’ll hire someone else.” I utter the words neither of us wants to voice.
“Yes. Is he with you?”
“No.” I start the bike. “Call me when you have a name and address for me. I’m going to call him and see where he is.
” I hang up and immediately call Boston.
He doesn’t answer, and it just keeps ringing as I try again and again, which has me even more worried.
I hop online and tap into my network to find Soren’s address.
I put the phone away and head to Boston’s work, in hopes I can find him there.
