Chapter 17 #2

“Tell him you were delivering a very thorough message,” I replied, smirking.

She shot me a look that was half exasperation, half lingering heat. “You’re impossible.”

“And yet you keep coming back for more.”

She turned toward the exit, smoothing her skirt with trembling hands. Just before she slipped through the door, I caught it, that small, secret smile playing at the corners of her mouth.

Mine. She was still mine.

The door shut behind her, and I turned back to the arena entrance. Game time.

But fucking hell. If eight-year-old Thomas could see me now, what would he think? That skinny, over-medicated kid, dreaming of becoming the most feared Villain in the world, now standing here with a hard-on for a Keeper.

Not just any Keeper. Havoc’s Keeper.

The universe had a sick sense of humor.

I made my way to the entrance tunnel, each step carrying me closer to the moment I’d engineered my entire life around. The platform waited at the end. A black disk that would rise dramatically through the floor of the arena.

My systems fed me the crowd’s energy levels, their anticipation registering as quantifiable data. Eighty-seven thousand heartbeats, accelerated. The air vibrating from their chants. The electromagnetic disruption from thousands of recording devices.

I stepped onto the platform, feeling it hum beneath my feet.

“Ladies and gentlemen!” The announcer’s voice rumbled from somewhere above me. “The most anticipated Nemesis pairing in a decade!”

I stood in darkness, crowd energy pulsing through the walls. Thousands of people chanting both our names—“HA-VOC! CI-PHER!”

“The mastermind of mayhem, the technological terror... CIPHER!”

Lights exploded. The platform shot upward. Spotlights blinded me as I broke through to deafening cheers.

I launched into the air, the arena’s energy humming against my skin. Holographic projections sparked around me that cast the arena in flickering shadows. Boos and cheers crashed together into pure electricity.

The Descent sprawled below. It was a three-dimensional battleground with floating platforms and shimmering hazards. My playground. My proving ground.

My eyes found Annie as she rushed into the VIP box, tablet ready. I forced myself to look away.

“And his opponent—the legend, the champion, the Hero who needs no introduction... HAVOC!”

The arena erupted as Havoc rose on his platform. No technological display needed, just swirling tendrils of dark blue energy dancing around him. White, blue, and gold gleaming under the lights. Power incarnate.

I dropped to my starting position. Between us: spinning barriers, gravity wells, moving platforms. No easy path to victory.

My fingers tingled. For once, I wouldn’t need to hold back.

Havoc landed opposite me. Our eyes locked. A slight nod.

“Combatants ready!”

I coiled, every sense heightened.

“BEGIN!”

I exploded from the platform, propulsion systems flaring dramatically. Pure theater. I didn’t need them.

Havoc moved like liquid chaos, blue energy trailing as he dodged my first strike. Decades of experience in every movement.

“Not bad,” he called, deflecting my gauntlet blast with a casual wave.

“Just warming up, old man.”

We collided above the center of the arena with a loud CRACK! The impact sending shockwaves through the air. The crowd screamed.

I deployed drones, holographics multiplying three into dozens. Havoc twisted through them, laughing, actually laughing, as chaos energy lashed out.

“Clever,” he acknowledged.

We danced through obstacles, each pushing the other higher, faster, harder. When his chaos blast came, my shield scattered it into light that drew gasps.

Suspended midair across a gravity well, I caught it. Havoc wore a genuine smile. Not for the cameras. For me.

Recognition. Respect.

I unleashed attacks, walking that delicate line. Show enough power to impress without revealing my true nature.

“Is that all you’ve got?” I taunted, hovering just beyond reach.

His eyes narrowed, smile playing at his mouth. “Not even close.”

There was a shift in his stance, a coiling of power that veterans of a hundred battles would recognize as danger, before he launched himself at me with blinding speed.

Oh shit.

WHAM!

His fist connected with my jaw and I spiraled backward through a barrier.

Real pain flared through my system. It was sharp and utterly exhilarating. This was it. Decades of planning, of hiding my true nature, all culminating in the legendary Havoc treating me as a genuine threat.

I laughed, spitting blood onto the platform. “Now we’re talking!”

I rocketed toward him, restraint slipping. My fist slammed into his abdomen with a sickening thud.

His eyes widened in recognition. I was stronger than he’d expected.

We escalated, each blow harder than the last. Arena obstacles became weapons. Platforms shattered. The crowd roared.

Blue chaos energy swirled in complex patterns as Havoc dug deeper. I pushed my suit to its limits, letting more of my natural strength flow through.

His chaos-infused fist cracked against my ribs with a beautiful agony.

My suit’s HUD flashed warnings.

Structural integrity compromised.

Power reserves: 38%.

Cooling systems: CRITICAL.

“Getting tired, old man?” My muscles were screaming. We’d been fighting for nearly twice the scheduled bout time, and neither of us showed any sign of yielding.

Havoc’s silver hair was plastered to his forehead, his costume torn at his shoulder. Yet his eyes still burned with that inextinguishable fire that had made him a legend. “I could do this all day. You’re not bad for someone who relies on toys.”

If only he knew.

“Time limit exceeded by forty-seven minutes!” the sound system boomed. “Match officially declared a draw!”

The crowd exploded. We’d given them something rare: equals at war.

We hovered, breathing hard, locked in silent acknowledgment of what had just transpired.

“Return to platforms,” the referee commanded.

My suit’s systems continued to scream:

Structural integrity: 22%

Power reserves: CRITICAL

Multiple contusions detected.

The taste of blood still filled my mouth. Worth every fucking drop.

Across the Descent, I saw in Havoc’s eyes what I’d dreamed of since childhood. Not the polite acknowledgment given to lesser opponents, but the genuine recognition of an equal.

One nod exchanged. A promise of battles to come. A rivalry worthy of our abilities.

The match was a draw.

I’d never felt more victorious.
