Chapter Three

“Damn, that seems like eons ago,” Jame spoke up while breaking the silence in the car.

James snapped his head up and stared at him. “You have counted the time since you met me, even the days?”

“Don’t get all sentimental on me. I have an internal clock, remember?”

Jame nodded and let out a long breath. “Oh yeah, the machine cogs where your inner organs are supposed to be.” He snickered.

“Good thing I have more patience now and do not want to kill you anymore,” Bane told him.

James gasped and placed his hand on his chest. “I am honored that you thought so much of me that you have wanted to off me.”

Bane rolled his eyes.

James sighed. “So when Shay told us that story about his twin it reminded me that I have a twin too. In fact, Tucker texted me that he’s gonna get married soon. He invited me to the wedding.”

“So? What’s the issue?”

“Not one I guess but...all my life I was an only child.”

“I wasn’t but it felt like it. Orrin and I were worlds apart,” Bane said as he watched the road.

“And then you found Cane,” James mentioned. “That was a real shocker. And a cop to boot. You being a hit man while your twin was a lawman.” He laughed.

“You and your twin...same thing.”

James looked over at him as he was confused. “What?”

“You being a poor schlep and your twin is a billionaire.”

James stared at him and defended his lack of wealth, “He inherited that crap.”

“Jealous much?”

He scoffed. “You haven’t seen my portfolio, have you?”

Bane nodded. “Yes James, I have.”

James kept staring at him. “Why man?”

“I did it before I got to know you.”

“And what did you think?”

“I think you got a skill for stocks.”

James smiled at him. “Damn, a compliment.”

“Don’t get excited, kid. There will be at least 4 anti-compliments coming to ya.

” Bane made a turn and they were approaching the motel from the back road.

He stopped the car, grabbed the bag he packed and opened the door.

“First, we have a look around. We should be able to pick up some heat signatures and hopefully find which room he’s in.

Then we’ll figure out how to get inside the room and get him out. ”

“You think it’s gonna be that easy?” James whispered.

“Sure kid.” Bane quietly shut the car door and walked off into the woods behind the motel.

James caught up with him quietly. His military training taught him well how to walk softly and carry a big stick. The stick being the gun in his hand along with the silencer.

Bane stopped in a spot that showed him the whole back of the motel. He brought out his heat scanner and began looking from room to room. He paused in each room long enough to check out just how many people were there.

James peeked over his shoulder.

When Bane got to the last room on the second floor, there were three men inside.

One of them was pacing while the other two were sitting on the bed.

From the way their bodies moved they seem to be having a rapid discussion.

Finally, Bane scoped the room out next door.

One signature looked to be lying on the bed.

Bane looked over at James and nodded. “We found them.”

James studied at the structure in front of him. He almost missed one hiccup then but he saw something move in the shadows. “There is a man sitting outside the extra room,” he whispered to Bane.

Bane nodded, “I can barely see his heat signature but yeah, he’s there.”

“How do we get around that? If he makes any noise at all, the others will come running.”

Bane took a moment to study the roof line then he nodded his head. “I think I can get to him from the roof.”

James just shook his head. That might work in books and on screen but he had no idea how it would work in real life but he didn’t say anything.

As if he’d read his mind, Bane leaned a little closer to James and whispered, “Trust me James. I know what I’m doing.”

“I’ll try to get right underneath them then.” James nodded then disappeared into the darkness.

Bane grabbed his special weapon from the bag and he too disappeared into the night.
